OverviewDigital information is a criticalcomponent of business at present. The volume of information that needs tobe captured and managed grows everyday – and that data often needs to beaccessed around-the-clock. This growthis fuelled by the diverse variety ofinformation your IT systems are nowexpected to accommodate. Multimediafiles are now just as commonplace asthe word-processing or spreadsheet filesthat dominated storage requirements justa few years ago.

Today's IT managers are being facedwith critical choices – do you restrict the type and quantity of informationeach user is allowed to use/access,potentially limiting their capabilities toundertake daily activities? Or do youcontinue to purchase individual harddisk drives, which are connectedexclusively to a single server (DirectAttach Storage or DAS), that drain man-hours with management andmonitoring?

While each of these choices has its own merits and shortcomings, there isanother approach – a Network AttachedStorage (NAS) solution. NAS provides a more flexible, intelligent and easier-to-manage storage resource that can notonly keep up with today's businesschallenges, but can adapt as your ownneeds and requirements evolve. Thebenefits of this approach include:

• Reducing the amount of time it takes to manage and allocate disk space

• Enabling the sharing of storageresources between workstationsrunning different operating systemsfrom different vendors

• A fully optimised and tuned file andprint solution that can be deployed in minutes rather than hours, with fullintegration into your existing ITinfrastructure

• The freedom to manage your solutionfrom any place at any time through astandard Internet browser

How can this guide help?Adding a new storage system to your IT components can be a dauntingprospect. The purpose of this guide is togive you a basic introduction to NAS.

• What is NAS and the benefits itprovides

• A simplified breakdown of the keycomponents that make up a NASsolution

• Typical HP StorageWorks NASsolutions, including migrationscenarios from Microsoft® Windows®

NT® Server 4.0 and Novell® Netware®

• The benefits of the HP StorageWorksNAS strategy

• Suggested HP configurations for a varying number of users

• Both business and technical answers tofrequently asked questions

• Jargon buster glossary

What is NAS?The simplest way of understanding aNAS solution is to think of it as a highlytuned and optimised storage appliancethat can connect to nearly all types ofclient devices, straight out of the box.

These client devices simply access theadditional shared disk space providedby the NAS appliance, through anyexisting Local Area Network (LAN) orWide Area Network (WAN) connection.

Because of the pre-installed nature ofNAS systems, they are often referred to as "plug-and-play" storage solutions. This is because no operating system hasto be installed, and no additional drivershave to be added for any of thehardware components needed to accessits storage capacity.

In fact, once the NAS systems appliancehas been connected and configured foryour LAN – it's just a matter of assigningaccess rights for your users through theweb-based administration interface.

What makes NAS differentfrom a Storage AreaNetwork (SAN)?This is probably one of the mostfrequently asked questions whendiscussing modern storage technologies.Storage Area Networks (SANs) andNAS fundamentally provide the samething – networked storage – but both themethod used and who benefits are verydifferent:

• NAS solutions can be deployed inminutes using the existing LANinfrastructure – providing optimisedstorage space that can be accesseddirectly by all users over the corporatenetwork

• SAN solutions provide potentiallylimitless, raw storage capacity directly to servers over a dedicatedinfrastructure that can be tailored tomeet your specific requirements andbudget

As such, this makes the two technologiescomplementary to each other, as many IT environments have the need for bothtypes of storage solution.

How can NAS help?NAS solutions will be of immediatebenefit to your organisation if you:

• Are looking to deploy a sharedstorage solution quickly and easily

• Need to reduce the time andpersonnel required to manage andprotect the information you alreadyhave

• Need to consolidate your DirectAttached Storage from disparatelocations which are under-utilisingexisting capacities or performance

• Have workstations/servers fromvarious hardware vendors and do notwant to continue buying individualstorage solutions from each vendor

• Are looking at disk-based data-protection solutions as an interim step or alternative to tape backups

• Are looking to consolidate the numberof file and print servers you are using

• Need future-proof scalability of diskresources

• Want to increase the effectiveness of your existing IT investments

What does a NAS solution consist of?The HP StorageWorks NAS solutions covered in this guide all have a commonarchitecture (illustrated below) and can best be explained as a series of buildingblocks that make up the overall NAS solution.

Core NAS featuresThe following three features power allHP StorageWorks NAS solutions:

The operating systemA crucial element of any NAS system, the operating system can directly affectthe speed and ease of deployment. All HP NAS solutions run on MicrosoftWindows Storage Server 2003 and areoptimised for maximum file-sharingperformance, straight out the box.

ManagementFollowing successful deployment comesefficient management. HP NAS solutionsare easily managed from any standardweb browser, and offer additionalremote options with terminal servicesand Integrated Lights-Out.

Universal connectivityPre-installed file protocols enable accessfrom Windows, NetWare, Linux®/UNIX®

and Apple clients - plus native supportfor HTTP and FTP. No hidden softwarelicences required.

Value added NAS features:

availability and data protection

HP StorageWorks NAS solutions offer a variety of ways to extend the level ofprotection and security for your data:

Server clusteringIf your availability requirements arehigher than only redundant componentsbuilt into a NAS device – such asnetwork interface cards (NICs), diskdrives or even power supplies – youmay want to configure your solution tohave multiple NAS devices acting as a single unit (called clustering) to ensureavailability in the event of one individualNAS device failure. Clustering is offeredin the NAS 4000s and the NAS 9000s*in configurations of up to eight nodes.

Data replicationThis technology creates a completemirror image of the data from one NASdevice to another, leaving the originaldata intact and fully operational. Oncethe initial replication has occurred, only changes to that data are thensynchronised between the two NAS devices – ensuring maximumperformance. HP OpenView StorageMirroring is an ideal data replicationsolution for protecting data that has tobe immediately available in the event ofdata loss or corruption on the primary system.

Data snapshotsData snapshotting – a standard featureof Windows Storage Server 2003 –enables administrators to take a copy of all data, at any moment in time(referred to as a 'point-in-time' copy). This copy can then be duplicated andstored on another NAS device, or ontape media via any supported tapebackup application, without affectingthe original data. In addition, snapshotsallow a simple and quick restore fromdisk, especially for client users runningon Windows 2000 or XP whereaccidentally deleted files can be restored from their individual PCs without involving the IT department.

Backup and recoveryHP NAS solutions are supported by most of the leading tape-backupsoftware vendors and can easily beincorporated into any existing LAN- or SAN-based data-protection environment – or even attached directlyto a tape drive. Optimum integration is achieved with HP OpenView DataProtector and HP StorageWorks tapesand tape libraries.

Anti-virusHP NAS solutions are also supported bythe industry's leading anti-virus softwarevendors – and can be incorporatedeasily into any anti-virus procedure orpolicy, without adding additional anti-virus tools to your IT environment.

Your questions answered

Q: What is the advantage to the HPStorageWorks NAS over a general-purpose file and print server?

A: The HP StorageWorks NAS portfoliohas been designed to serve files toheterogeneous clients. In addition toperformance tuning, HP StorageWorksNAS includes integrated softwaredesigned to support a multi-vendoroperating system environment, andsnapshot and data replicationcapabilities.

Q: How can I back up the data from myNAS system?

A: The HP strategy for NAS backup isdesigned around 'customer choice'. The NAS systems that HP provides canintegrate into your existing backupstrategy if using the following backupproducts:

• HP OpenView Data Protector

• Atempo Time Navigator

• Bakbone Netvault

• CA Brightstor ArcServe

• CA Brightstor EB

• CommVault Galaxy

• HP OmniBack

• Legato Networker

• SyncSort Backup Express

• VERITAS Backup Exec

• VERITAS Netbackup

The supported backup software caneither be installed directly onto the NASdevice for direct data backup, or therelevant Windows agents can beinstalled and managed remotely.

Page 20: Easy as NAS solution guide - Hewlett Packardwhp-aus1.cold.extweb.hp.com/pub/services/storage/info/nas_solutio… · Easy as NAS solution guide. 2 Easy as NAS solution guide Overview

HP also supports either direct SCSI-attached tape devices or network/SAN-attached tape devices. SAN-attached is recommended for multipleNAS devices and NAS/SAN fusionproducts provided by HP (i.e., the4000s). A SAN-attached backup matrix can be found at: www.hp.com/eur/ebs

Q: How can I protect the data on myNAS server from viruses?

A: Again, the HP strategy for anti-virus is 'customer choice'. HP StorageWorksNAS devices support the followingproducts:

• MacAfee Net Shield

• Symantec Norton AntiVirus

• Trend Micro ServerProtect

• Sophos Anti-Virus

Q: How can I increase the performanceof my HP NAS system?

A: Ideally you would identify thebottleneck in the system and address this area. HP NAS systems canaccommodate additional memory andan additional processor, depending onthe model. Also, adjusting RAID sets andadding higher-performance HP hard diskdrives for heavily impacted volumes cansignificantly increase performance.

Network performance can also impact NAS performance. Try tosegment NAS traffic, and/or addadditional network controllers to theNAS system as required. You can alsoimprove performance by reducing CPUcycles managing the TCP/IP stack in theoperating system – to help you achievethis, HP recommends the TCP OffloadEngine (TOE) network card fromAlacritech. Note: the NAS 1200scannot be upgraded, and should bedeployed with future requirements inmind.

Q: How does HP OpenView StorageMirroring work?

A: HP OpenView Storage Mirroringreplicates data from one HP NAS systemto another over a TCP/IP network. Afterthe initial replication of all the requireddata, only changes to the particular fileare then replicated to the other system. This reduces required network bandwidthand avoids having to resend the wholefile. Storage Mirroring can also bescheduled for particular times or beconfigured to utilise a percentage ofnetwork bandwidth for greater flexibility.

Page 21: Easy as NAS solution guide - Hewlett Packardwhp-aus1.cold.extweb.hp.com/pub/services/storage/info/nas_solutio… · Easy as NAS solution guide. 2 Easy as NAS solution guide Overview

21

Q: What is snapshotting technology?

A: Snapshotting technology allows datato be duplicated with minimal usage ofdisk space. The file index information ofa particular volume is duplicated andpresented as another volume to the NASsystem. This duplicated volume thenholds a point-in-time copy of the originalvolume. Any subsequent changes to theoriginal volume will then cause diskspace to be used. This is because theoriginal file is copied to the 'SnapShot'volume before it is modified. Forexample, a 100 GB volume that has10% changes per day would require a10-GB snapshot volume.

Q: What is the benefit of snapshottingtechnology?

A: Snapshotting technology allows youto easily backup duplicated data withoutaffecting the performance of the originalvolume. Moreover, it can significantlyreduce data restore times - as data canbe rolled back to the original volume, using disk rather than tape. With theintegrated snapshotting feature inWindows Storage Server 2003, userscan now restore deleted files from theirdesktop without involving the ITdepartment.

Q: Please explain the protocolssupported in more detail.

A: Common Internet File System (CIFS) is the protocol used by Microsoft toshare files between Windows-basedsystems. Network File System (NFS) isthe protocol used by Linux and UNIXsystems to communicate. NetWare CoreProtocol (NCP) and AppleTalk are forNetWare clients and Apple Mac systemsrespectively. All of these protocols allowmachines to mount a disk partition on aremote machine as if it were on a localhard drive.

Jargon buster

DAS (Direct Attached Storage)A deployment of dedicated storagedevices for each server. Disadvantagesinclude inefficient storage use andallocation, and multi-vendor storage and management interfaces.

SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)Protocol used to communicate with SCSIdevices; also used by fibre channels tocommunicate with disk drives.

DtS (DAS to SAN technology)An exclusive HP feature that providesquick and easy data migration fromSmartArray and RA 4100 devices to anMSA1000 Disk Array.

SAN (Storage Area Network)A high-speed, special-purpose networkthat connects different storage deviceswith associated servers. It can providebackup and archival storage for multipleor even remote locations.

SnapshotThe ability to duplicate data within aserver, NAS device or RAID Array andpromote it as a copy of data whileutilising minimal disk space.

Data replicationThe ability to replicate data to anothersystem/site via either a LAN or SANconnect.

CIFS, NFS, NCP, MAC, HTTP & FTPProtocols that allow machines to sendinformation to one another over anetwork. For more information, see theQ&A section of this guide.

LAN (Local Area Network)A network within the confines of abuilding typically based on Ethernet.

WAN (Wide Area Network)A network spanning the boundaries ofone building to another over longdistances - even across countries.

Fibre channelLike Ethernet, the topology and transportprotocol used to send block-level datainformation between server and storage.

RAIDRAID – Redundant Array of InexpensiveDisks, the ability to group disks as ifthere were one physical unit and alsoprovide redundancy within that diskgroup i.e., mirroring data.

Heterogeneous connectAllowing clients or servers with differingoperating systems to connect to the NASor SAN infrastructure at the same time.

ClusteringThe ability to group multiple NASsystems and appear to the end user asone logical NAS file server. A server ina cluster is called a node, 4 NAS servers= 4 cluster node.

Content filteringAllows administrators to restrict the typesof file that are shared across the server,e.g., mp3 files.

Quota managementRestricts how much data can be storedon a volume or file share, preventingdisk space from reaching zero.
