Activity Descriptions

Alpine Skiing (Boys & Girls)This sport is a combined Eastview/Eagan boys and girls ski team that requires very little experience to be involved. Our practices are at Buck Hill from 3-5 on a Mon.-Fri. basis and all that is required to join is your own ski equipment a helmet and a season pass to Buck Hill. All activities fees associated with the school are waived.

Athletic TrainingAthletic training is learning about the care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and how to recognize and prevent athletic injuries. You will learn and work under the supervision of the staff athletic trainer.

BaseballBaseball is a spring sport with one varsity team, one junior varsity team, one sophomore team and two freshmen teams. Practice begins in late March, games being in early April and the season concludes in early June. Practices are every day after school with some Saturday practices.

Basketball (Boys)Boys’ basketball is a co-curricular activity that meets after school each day during the season and competes against a wide range of high schools throughout the state. This program supports 9A, 9B, Sophomore, JV, and Varsity level athletes. There are also numerous off-season training programs for those motivated to improve athletically.

Basketball (Girls)Girls basketball is a competitive sport that offers an opportunity to play the great game of basketball in the Lake Conference. There are levels at all grades: 9th, 10th, Junior Varsity and Varsity. Practice starts in early November and lasts until early March.

Best BuddiesBest Buddies is an organization where the mainstreamed students are paired with a special needs individual, to work on a variety of skills, including social and communication skills. Events are held during the school year, both at school and after hours.

Book ClubThe book club is open to all students who are interested in reading and discussing a variety of books. Club members select books to be read.

Business Professionals of AmericaBPA is a youth organization for students in business and marketing classes. Students experience leadership, competitive events and professional conferences at the regional, state and national levels.

BRAVO!Bravo! is Eastview High School’s musical extravaganza which features singing, dancing and the EVHS Jazz Band. Rehearsals are held after school, evening and weekends .

Cheerleading (Competition)Competition Cheerleading is a sport involving stunting, dancing, and tumbling, Practices start in late April and continue through the first weekend of February. Competitions begin in late October and run through the end of the season.

Cheerleading (Sport)Sport cheerleading is a way to get involved in school spirit by leading the crowd in sideline cheers during varsity and junior varsity sport games. Sports include football, soccer, basketball, and hockey.

ChessThe Chess Team is a group of people who enjoy the challenge of chess and who compete against area schools. It is great to develop higher level thinking skills and meet new people.

Cross Country (Boys/Girls)Cross-country running is a sport in which teams of runners compete on a 4,000 meter course over open or rough terrain which may include grass or woodlands. The season begins in mid August and is done the first week of November. Practices are held daily after school and usually held in the mornings during August .

Dance Show (Spring)Dancers in Dance Tech class may audition to be in extra dances in the spring dance show. Rehearsals will take place during the month of May and June, 1-2 days a week after school. A variety of styles and levels are offered.

Dance Team (Competition)The Lightning Dance Team has a competitive season. Dancers must audition each spring and can be placed on JV and Varsity level teams. Dance styles performed/competed include Jazz, High Kick/Precision, Hip Hop and Pom.

DebateStudents, primarily in teams of two, research and debate issues of current interest. Competition is against other Minnesota schools. Examples of recent debate topics include the War on terrorism, US policy toward Sudan, gun control, and global warming.

DECA (Assoc. of Marketing Students)DECA is a co-curricular, student centered educational organization. Its mission is to enhance the education of students interested in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. Competitive events allow students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life marketing situations. Students will compete in a variety of events consisting of marketing related test, role-plays, interviews and sales demonstrations that directly relate to their career objective.

Diversity ClubThis group of students strives to make EVHS a welcoming, accepting place. Activities range from planning a cultural heritage celebration to facilitating a respect workshop for 9th grade students. We enjoy our meetings held every Tuesday after school in C335.

Environmental Club (LEAP)LEAP is an environmental organization that is involved in educating its members and the student body on current environmental concerns. We meet Thursday’s at 2:30. Some of the projects we are involved in include recycling at EVHS, educational displays, field trips to learn more, EVHS pond restoration and the envirothon (an environmental competition for local schools).

Fellow Christian AthletesFCA is a group for students interested in learning more about Biblical values through fun and fellowship. Our weekly meetings include skits, music, games and group discussions. Meetings are on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m.

Figure Skating (Ice Follies)Puts on an ice skating show (Ice Follies) usually in February .

FootballSummer Conditioning and skill development begins in June for the upcoming season. This work is done as part of our summer conditioning program at EVHS. Two-a-day practices typically begin on the third Monday in August and last for two weeks. After the two week period we will practice once a day. Varsity games are usually played on Friday nights, JV games on Mondays at 4:30 pm, sophomore games on Thursdays at 4:00 pm, 9th Grade A games on Tuesdays at 4:00 pm and 9th Grade B games on Friday at 4:00 pm. These “lower level” schedules are subject to change and will be finalized during the two a day portion of practice. All players that can meet the practice and behavior expectations will be allowed to participate - no cuts will be made .

German ClubThe EVHS German Club meets throughout the school year to celebrate and learn about the German speaking countries and their culture. We welcome all students (need not be in German class to participate). Activities are chosen by a group of students who volunteer to plan and host the events. Past events have included German movie nights, trips to a German restaurant, Stammtisch and holiday parties.

Golf (Boys/Girls)Learn the rules and how to play golf. Try-outs start in March and the season goes through May. Practices are off site at local golf courses after school on the weekdays only. Equipment needed: set of golf clubs.

GymnasticsThe gymnastics program consists of junior varsity and varsity. We compete on the Vault, Uneven parallel bars, Beam and the Floor Exercise. Our season starts in November and goes through the end of February. Practice is Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 and Saturday morning from 9:00 to 12:00.

Hockey (Boys/Girls)Hockey is a winter activity, played 2nd and 3rd quarters. Hockey is a highly competitive and physical sport.

International ClubAll EVHS students are welcome to attend any of the approximately four to six meetings during the year. The group is for anyone who enjoys meeting people and learning about other cultures. We begin the year with a welcome to our international students, carve pumpkins at Halloween, celebrate Chinese New Year’s and learn about heritage, countries and cultures of EVHS students. The themes and meeting dates will be determined by the members each year.

Intramural BadmintonIM Badminton is just one of many intramural programs offered at Eastview. The IM Badminton League consists of three competitive Divisions that end with exciting, season-ending tournaments. The three Divisions are Men’s and Women’s Singles, and the thrilling, Co-ed Doubles competition. Choose to play Singles, Doubles, or both!! See you on the court in the fall!

Intramural BasketballIM Basketball is an opportunity for EVHS students to participate is an organized, competitive league. Games are in the evenings on Monday and Wednesday between 7 and 10 pm.

Intramural Flag FootballIM Football is an opportunity for EVHS student to participate in an organized competitive league. Games can occur Monday thru Thursday from between 3 and 5 pm.

Intramural GolfIntramural golf is available to boys and girls in grades 9-12. The season begins in Mid April and goes until the end of May. Players play one nine hole round each week at Parkview Golf Club in Eagan. There are various playing formats during the season to provide for some friendly competition. Each player must have their own set of clubs to participate.

Intramural SoftballCo-rec slow-pitch softball league. Games are played between 2:45 and 6:00 pm

Intramural VolleyballIM Volleyball is offered in the Fall at Eastview and lasts about six weeks. The IM Volleyball League consists of three divisions and season-ending tournaments. Listen for details and keep your eyes open for posters in the hallway. I’ll see you in the Fall!

Investment ClubInvestment Club meets once per month to learn about investing through the stock market. Club members will manage a portfolio of investments through research, presentations to fellow club members and a majority vote will determine actual investment transactions.

Japan Bowl (MN Japanese Language Competition)Minnesota Japanese Language Competition is a quiz bowl of Japanese Language and culture. This competition is targeted for 2nd , 3rd and 4th year Japanese Language students. Practice starts in January and competition is held in March.Japanese National Honor SocietyJNHS promotes interest in Japanese language study and recognizes high achievement of Japanese language students. Members are encouraged to volunteer to help various EVHS Japanese Program events.

Knowledge BowlKnowledge Bowl competitions are interdisciplinary academic contests designed for students. During the contests students compete in written and oral rounds by answering questions related to all areas of learning (mathematics, science, history, literature, geography, humanities, and current events). Questions test students’ recall, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Practices typically are one day a week for two hours.

LINC Community ServiceLINC Service is an opportunity for every Eastview student to get involved. Our organization provides at least one community service opportunity per month. Most students are expected to participate in at least one LINC sponsored community service project per month as well as any other opportunities the student may find on their own. We meet approximately once a month, with a majority of our communications taking place over email. Our first project starts in September and we continue to volunteer through the Month of May. Some examples of service projects that we are involved with are the Twin Cities Marathon, the MN Hoop-a-thon, several walks to cure a variety of diseases, and several of our students help mentor elementary age children after school.

LINC Leadership - 9th Grade MentorsUpperclassmen that act as mentors for 9th grade students.

Literary Arts Magazine (Voices)Voices is an annual publication of student writing, photography and artwork. The staff meets weekly with daily production meetings in March and April.

Math TeamStudents participate in five Minnesota Math League Events(tests). Participants earn individual as well as team scores. Practices start in mid-October and continue through February (unless we are invited to the State Tournament - in which case we practice until Mid-March). Practices are held twice a week, after school.

Mock TrialMock Trial is a competition role play of a civil or criminal court case. Students choose to participate as a lawyer or witness. Students will learn about how a trial works and the basics of the law. Participants should enjoy framing an argument, critical thinking, problem solving and acting. Practices begin in early November and competitions are in December through February. The State Tournament is in mid-March and Nationals are held in May .

MusicalThe musical is the performance of a work of musical theatre that involves actors, singers, dancers, instrumentalists, technical/construction crews, and costumers. Rehearsals may be held after school, evenings, and weekends.

National Art Honor SocietyCandidates are selected after Quarter 3 of their Sophomore year based upon the pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service.

National Forensic LeagueThe NFL is a national debate and speech honor society that recognizes student achievement and participation in those activities. Participants in debate and speech become NFL members and earn degrees in recognition of their performance. A student cannot be an NFL member without participating in debate and/or speech .

National Honor SocietyCandidates are selected after Quarter 3 of their Sophomore year based upon the pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service.

Newspaper (The Lightning Press)The Lightning Press is the student newspaper. Any student can join the newspaper staff by attending meetings and submitting articles, photographs and/or cartoons. Those who wish to assist in managing and creating the newspaper can also apply for editor positions.

Nordic Skiing (Boys and Girls)The ISD #196 Nordic Ski Team (sometimes referred to as the Cross-Country Ski Team) competes in both classic and skate technique races of approximately 5 km against other teams in the Lake Conference. Our season runs from mid-November to mid-February and typically includes between 12-14 races. Team practices are held Monday - Friday from 3:15 - 5:00 PM at a variety of parks in the area.

One Act PlayThe One Act Play is a competitive theatrical event in which twenty students (cast and technical crews combined) rehearse and perform a play and are evaluated and ranked with performances from other schools by three trained judges. Rehearsals begin in mid December with competitions in late January and early February.

Open GymNights when the main gym is open for playing basketball and/or other activities. Check with the athletic office for schedule.

Pep BandPep Band is a volunteer group that performs at selected games during the winter athletic season. Participation in Pep Band is a central part of the student’s ability to earn a varsity letter in band. Students must be currently enrolled in a band class to participate. Band students believe pep bands very fun and an opportunity to connect with friends.

Pit OrchestraThis group of musicians is selected to perform the music in our musical productions. The group varies in size based on specific instrumentation for the musical being produced. Membership is based on audition scores, and pit orchestra director’s recommendation and selection. Rehearsals and performances are after school, evenings and weekends.

Political Action ClubThis activity provides a forum for current political discussions. Students of all political persuasion can meet weekly to exchange opinions.

Prom CommitteeThe Prom Committee helps in planning the prom. This committee helps to choose the Prom theme, colors, decorations and much more.

Quilting ClubA time to get together and learn quilting blocks. We have made blankets, purses and wall hangings. All levels of experience are welcome. Bring your creativity.

Ringer RangersStudents meet approximately once per month to watch Lord of the Rings film clips, discuss the film and do related activities.

RoboticsWorking in teams, students learn to design, build and program a LEGO robot to accomplish a specific set of missions and compete at tournaments.

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)This is our school’s chapter of a national organization dedicated to raising the awareness of safe decision making among students. Every other year SADD students assist in the Mock Crash in May. Meetings are held approximately twice per month during the school year.

Science OlympiadScience Olympiad (www.Soinc.org) is a competition that allows pairs of students to compete against students from other schools in events that span and stretch the entire science curriculum. Some events have students answering questions based on content from a certain body of science knowledge.

Skiing and Snowboarding ClubThe club makes 2-3 trips per month to Welch Village and 1 overnight trip at the end of the season to either Spirit Mountain or Lutsen Mountain.

Soccer (Boys)Varsity Soccer for ages 9-12 that competes in the Lake Conference and the Minnesota State High School League.

Soccer (Girls)Lightning Girls’ Soccer consists of 5 teams, 9A and 9B, Sophomore, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. Practices usually run from 2:45-5:00. Lower level games usually start at 4:00, with Varsity games starting at 5:00 or 7:00.

SoftballThe high school softball program has opportunities for girls in grades 9-12. Practices begin after school in mid-March and the season typically ends in May. Teams compete against other schools in the Lake Conference, as well as some non-conference opponents.

SpeechThe Eastview Speech Team is comprised of over 100 team members who compete in a variety of public speaking events. The team competes locally and nationally in this MSHSL-sponsored activity.

SteppersThe Eastview Steppers are a group that meets after school to stomp, clap and chant to show our school spirit.

Student CouncilA student leadership organization aimed at making a difference in the school community. Meets from September through May on Thursday mornings and at various times during the week for committee planning. There are also several optional summer events and meetings.

Swimming & Diving (Boys/Girls)Swimming and diving is an activity that pushes an athletic to explore their physical and psychological limits. All athletes are welcome. Practice is everyday after school at Falcon Ridge Middle School pool.

Table Tennis Program is designed for beginning, intermediate or advanced players. We play every Wed. and Thurs. mid-January to mid-April. Competitive play against other schools and an end of the year tournament is offered to all who wish to participate,

Tennis (Boys)Played in the spring. There are matches played both at home and away after school with some Saturday tournaments.

Tennis (Girls)Played in the Fall. We play both home and away matches after school and some tournaments on Saturdays, Although the official season begins in August, there are captains practices at indoor facilities throughout the year and on the school courts throughout the summer months.

TheatreThe full length play is an opportunity for actors, technician/construction crews and costumers to rehearse and stage a work of theatre. Rehearsals may be after school, in the evening and on weekends.

Theatre TechStudents work with the theatre technical director on building sets, working with props, as well as with lighting and sound at theatre productions. They also serve as ushers for most performances in the performing arts center.

Track & Field (Boys)Track and Field is a sport that trains and enhances athlete’s physical abilities in conjunction with teaching them skills specific to mastering their specific event.

Video ClubEastview’s video club utilizes the equipment in the television studio to give back to the school community. Students are involved in live productions of school activities such as sporting events, school plays, pepfests, etc. They are also responsible for Flashback, our student-produced video yearbook DVD.

VolleyballVolleyball is an athletic activity which involves students gr. 9-12. Try-outs start in mid-August and run for approximately 1 week when teams are formed. After teams are formed, each volleyball squad will have practice or competition each weekday and will participate in three Saturday tournaments throughout the season. The entire season will run from August through October, with Varsity competition possibly leading into November.

WrestlingWrestling is perhaps the purest form of athletic competition. Wrestling is an individual sport and a team sport. The primary objective in wrestling is to gain control of your opponent and ultimately pin him.

Yearbook (The Lightyear)We use computers and digital cameras to produce the yearbook (approx. 300 pgs.), including hard bound book produced from Sept. to March and the spring supplement produced in April/May. Planning takes place at a 3-day summer camp the 3rd week of July. We meet Tues. and Thurs. from 2:30-4:30 pm.
