NOW YOU KNOW Jim Pompey Green River Task Force Captain Jim Pompey, a graduate of Washington State University in criminal justice, joined the King County Sherriff's department in 1972. An investigator for police special operations in charge of the Marine Patrol Search and Rescue, he was an excellent scuba diver. After organizational changes were made to the investigation in 1983, Pompey was promoted to captain of the Green River Task Force becoming the highest ranking African American in the sheriff’s office. He and his team began to monitor their prime suspect, Gary Ridgeway. Tragically, Pompey lost his life in a scuba diving accident a year after his promotion in 1987. During each week of the legislative session, students ages 14 to 16 from all across the state serve as legislative pages. Washington state is one of only 7 states that have a page program! Legislators sponsor the pages, who assist with the Legislature's work by making deliveries and performing other necessary work tasks. Pages earn $35 dollars per day for their one week of service.

Pages also spend part of each day attending Page School to learn about the Legislature's role, procedures and participants. A certificated teacher and teacher assistant with relevant experience bring a wealth of knowledge, fun and enthusiasm teaching civics to those in the program.

Apply early for this once in a lifetime experience! Applicants can apply for both House and Senate Page Programs, but
