Bay Mills Community College, in partnership with the Michigan Fitness Foundation, has compiled a list of recreation resources located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP). This EUP Recreation Resource Guide covers Chippewa, Mackinac, and Luce Counties, and features information on trails, bikeways, indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, recreation gear and equipment, as well as useful apps, websites, and local clubs.

This guide also features a variety of photographs highlighting unique natural landscapes, and recreation opportunities across the EUP. These photographs were graciously provided by its residents.

Chippewa County is located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper

Peninsula, and features many recreation areas, historical

sites, lighthouses, and of course, the extraordinary Soo Locks.

Natural features, such as Tahquamenon Lower Falls, the

St. Mary’s River, sprawling forests and waterways, offer many

opportunities for recreation activities year-round, from

fishing and kayaking, to two-tracking and hiking. Chippewa

County has something for everyone.

Mackinac County is located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula,

north of the famous Mackinac Bridge, and features a variety of

cultural and historical sites, islands and island chains, trails,

golf courses, nature preserves, and much more.

Mackinac County shares a shoreline with the Straits of Mackinac,

Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron, presenting recreational

opportunities, both on and off the water, including the St. Ignace

Boardwalk and Marina, and Hessel Beach. Enjoy some time

on Lake Huron by taking by boat or ferry to Bois Blanc Island,

Mackinac Island, or the Les Cheneaux Islands.

Luce County is located west of Chippewa County in Michigan’s

Upper Peninsula, and features over 300,000 acres of public access

land, with hundreds of miles of snowmobile, ATV, motorcycle,

cross-country skiing, and hiking trails. Luce County boasts a

plethora of inland lakes, rivers and streams, as well as over 30

miles of Lake Superior shoreline. The area has plenty of notable

features, including the Upper Tahquamenon Falls and the Big Two

Hearted River.
