Education
• Student Teaching Supervisor, Ithaca College School of Music
• Executive Committee, Board of Regents Blue Ribbon Commission
on the Arts
• Retired from NY Public Schools after 32 years, including 19 as a
Teacher and 13 as an Art, Dance, Music and Theater department
Administrator
• Member, NYSSMA’s Curriculum Committee since 1999

What is the current pathway to graduation?
Successful completion of 5 high school Regents
examinations in:
• English
• Math
• Science
• Global Studies
• American History

What are the alternative pathways to graduation?
Successful completion of 4 high school Regents
examinations in:
• English
• Math
• Science
• Global Studies OR American History
• Completion of an approved, rigorous alternative course of
study

Why create alternative pathways to graduation?
To improve high school graduation rates statewide
To encourage students to follow courses of study that
will make them college and/or career ready
To encourage creativity and collaborative work

What pathways already exist?
2014: Board of Regents approved a series assessments
in Career & Technical Education to use in a pathway.
2015: Board of Regents created a Blue Ribbon
Commission on the Arts to examine and recommend
Arts Pathways
(Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts)
Pathways to Graduation
What will the Board of Regents consider based upon the recommendations of their Blue Ribbon Commission on
the Arts?
A Three Phase Program
Years 1 - 4: Transitional Assessments, i.e. Arts Advanced Placement Exam, International Baccalaureate Program
&
Adoption of New Pre-K-12 Arts Learning Standards
Years 2 – 4: College-level courses, school program waivers
Years 3 – 4: Student-developed portfolios, State-created model end-of-course exams
New PreK-12 Learning Standards In
The Arts
To replace/update 1996 NYS Arts Standards
Based upon 2014 National Core Arts Standards
Four Artistic Processes
Creating
Performing/Presenting
Responding
Connecting
Each Artistic Process is broken down into Anchor Standards containing Process Components and
Essential Questions that lead to Enduring Understandings
