THE LAST YEAR has Been full of positive outcomes & 2014 promises the same.

thanks to the great work of elizabeth rogers and her team at regional arts nsW we received an increase in our state funding base which has enabled us to expand our activities in a number of ways.

one of our biggest steps forward was securing a shop front in fitzmaurice street. obtaining a higher profile location with more space has been a goal for a number of years now; however the right location just never presented itself. in late 2013, while scott was heading for coffee at one of his favourite locations a “for rent” sign caught his eye. We were able to secure the premises at 98 fitzmaurice street and by the end 2013 we were working with the landlord to select new carpet and paint.

the new location, which is next door to our friends at aBc radio riverina, will not only bring us a street frontage but also enough space to be able to run small workshops and events. this will provide us with much more scope to embark on professional development activities with artists and the staff of member councils but also provide opportunities for small performances and showcases.

this year we welcomed Young shire as a new member, taking our total membership to 11 councils. We service a big region stretching from the snowy mountains to the plains of lockhart and urana which means that innovation in service delivery is always on our minds

the car Boot Gallery was a great example of how that innovation works. a touring exhibition of works that fitted into the boot of the company’s car, the works visited council chambers, clubs and libraries across the region.

the organisation has worked hard to tour as many events as possible and this has resulted in activities being held in every lGa. one of the most significant of these was the short + sweet short play festival which was held in cootamundra.

the event brought actors, directors and writers from across our region together to work on the short plays which were performed at the cootamundra arts centre. it was a very successful event and one which we hope to repeat in the future. our Dream Big conference focused on public art this year, a very important issue for many public authorities and for artists seeking commissions. We continue to be committed to the delivery of the conference in partnership with Western riverina arts as it provides an extremely valuable professional development opportunity for council staff, artists, councillors, not-for-profits and the creative industries.

Demonstrating the diversity of the public art issue, scott prepared a public art policy for the redevelopment of the Wagga Wagga Base hospital site, as a consultancy service to health infrastructure nsW.

early in the year sarah mcewan left us to pursue her own artistic practice but we were fortunate enough to secure madeline ryan into a revamped communications role. madeline’s corporate background in pr has brought a new skillset to our organisation and she is a much valued member of our small team.

sarah was the driving force behind our 8 artists project which has gained recognition across the state for its innovative approach to working with artists who have a disability. We have been asked to speak on the project at a variety of forums and anyone who saw the exhibition would have been impressed by the quality and diversity of works the project developed.

We continue to be blessed by the presence of our raDo scott howie, who leads by example. his leadership has been recognised at a state level when he was appointed to the nsW cultural policy reference Group to assist in the development of the state policy. his dedication to innovation is reflected in every project the eastern riverina undertakes. he consistently seeks opportunities to expand our services and to provide a diverse range of experiences to our members and the artists that operate within our region.

regional projects like the fresh | Dance | film demonstrate this. thom paton, our new projects officer is to be congratulated on the success of this project, for which he is responsible. he works tirelessly on a number of youth-focused projects and is also a member of the reroc Youth and community services network. as a network member he provides invaluable advice on ways in which councils can access arts and cultural activities and artists for their communities. With the addition of John heine taking care of finances so capably our team is complete.

GOAL 1 BE RECOGNISED AS LEADER IN ARTS AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN OUR REGION

DREAM BIGWe partnered again with Western riverina arts to present Dream Big, a one day conference for anyone involved in arts and cultural development in our regions. it was our turn to host the conference this year and lockhart provided us with the perfect backdrop to discuss this year’s theme of public art. over 50 attendees from across the region attended , a mix of council staff, artists, community groups, tourism and regional development workers.

Keynote speakers were the acclaimed artist fiona foley and arts catalyst Wendy hee. a panel session involving local councils and artists they had employed on public art projects gave insight into the commissioning process, while another session looked at community driven public art projects’ contribution to cultural tourism.

8 ARTISTS2013 saw the completion of our major arts project, 8 artists. this project was a collaboration between emerging and established artists with and without disability to make

new work for exhibition at the Wagga Wagga art Gallery (17 may-14 July 2013). the artists collaborating were Wayne emerson (Wagga), Jeff mccann (Wagga), angela coombs matthews (temora), Kellie hulm (Junee), vic mcewan (Boree creek), scott lea (Wagga), Jacqui meyers (Wagga) and Julia Davies (Wagga/sydney).

a 5 week residency at the Wagga Wagga art Gallery allowed the artists time, space and support to finish their artworks and prepare for the exhibition. a professional catalogue for the exhibition was produced. the exhibition opened friday 17 may 2013 by Josie cavallaro, arts Development, accessible arts with over 120 people attending. the following day the forum, ‘new Directions in arts and Disability’ was held where Josie cavallaro was the keynote speaker alongside the artists who spoke about their process and work. the full process is documented at 8artists.net. over 3500 people attended the exhibition.

Eastern Riverina Arts seeks to be recognised as the go-to organisation in our region for artists, community groups, local councils and for arts organisations outside our region who want to work in our region. We want to be recognised for creating employment opportunities for artists and arts workers and demonstrating best practice in the way we do this. We want to initiate capacity building activities for those engaged in arts and cultural development and creative industries in our region.

since the completion of the exhibition eastern riverina arts has been invited to present at accessible arts supported studios - possibility and potential forum at the museum of contemporary arts as well as to its supported studio network.

a big thank you to our partners throughout the project iDeas, Kurrajong Warratah and Wagga Wagga art Gallery.

SHORT+SWEET RIVERINAin partnership with short+sweet productions and the arts centre cootamundra, eastern riverina arts delivered a riverina-wide iteration of the short+sweet play festival model.

a series of four skills workshops resulted in the development and performance of nine new short plays to an audience of over 300 people over three nights at the arts centre in cootamundra. Writers hailed from Wagga, cootamundra, harden and Griffith with the actors coming from Wagga, Young, cootamundra, harden and Griffith. 40 people participated in the workshop program and performances. short+sweet also provided an employment opportunity for a recently graduated production manager and an emerging video production company.

CAR BOOT GALLERYeastern riverina arts developed a small touring exhibition featuring ten artists, one from each of the local

Government areas serviced by eastern riverina arts.

the artists were: Jordy Bos (coolamon), Graham cossey (cootamundra), peter mcDade (tumbarumba), sue mcDonald (tumut), amanda Gay-mccrone (temora), amanda levett (harden), raeleen pfeiffer (lockhart), Demi smith (urana), ralph tikerpae (West Wyalong) and hayley Wheaton (Wagga Wagga). the exhibition was curated by ray Wholohan, a current phD candidate at charles sturt university.

the artists ranged from professional exhibiting artists to emerging artists working in sculpture, printmaking, painting and ceramics providing a snapshot of artistic practice across the region. the exhibition was designed to pack into the boot of the eastern riverina arts’ vehicle and to be set up in both traditional and non-traditional spaces.

the exhibition appeared at a gallery in tumut, an outdoor festival in harden, in a café cinema in tumbarumba, a museum in temora, an historic courthouse in urana, an arts centre in cootamundra and the ex-serviceman’s club in lockhart. opening functions were held in tumut, temora and urana and artist talks in lockhart and urana. the exhibition provided eastern riverina arts with opportunities to further promote itself with the arts communities of its member councils and to develop and strengthen relationships with community groups. it also has helped raise the profile of 10 artists, allowing them to

take part in a curated exhibition. the exhibition was also an opportunity for an emerging Wagga-based curator to put together an exhibition and be employed. artists received skill development in creating work for touring, artists contracts and agreements. We were also able to contract a recent graduate from csu photography course to document the works – providing us and the artists with quality documentation.

CONCERT PRESENTATION – TAKADIMI, STRING CONTINGENT, FANNY LUMSDEN AND SOUSAPHONICSthroughout 2012 and 2013 eastern riverina arts have received requests from individual groups and musica viva to assist in presenting or brokering performances in our region. in 2013 eastern riverina arts presented/co-presented two concerts by the string contingent in harden and tumbarumba (february), two concerts by takadimi in temora and Batlow (october) and a concert in association with musica viva by brass quartet the sousaphonics. (september).

eastern riverina arts also assisted in the co-ordination and promotion of the annual small town hall tour by fanny lumsden and the thrill seekers to Yalgogrin, collingullie and marrar (april.)

these micro-tours bring music to towns with less access to professional music, while providing eastern riverina arts with very visible presence throughout the region.

RIVERINA CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSICeastern riverina arts was approached by the conservatorium for assistance in developing regional tours and venues. in 2013 we worked with the conservatorium to tour elements of their concert series to cootamundra, temora, tumbarumba and tumut.

VIRTUAL REALITYeastern riverina arts through regional arts nsW provided financial support to regional nsW artists Greg pritchard and the ronalds to create a performative interactive digital work for presentation at the underbelly festival on cockatoo island. virtual reality saw audiences on cockatoo island interacting via sms with regional artists who were live streaming over an eight hour period. six of the artists involved in the live streaming came from the eastern riverina region. this was regional arts nsW’s contribution to regional arts australia’s Digital Broadband initiative.

GOAL 2 BE A CONNECTED AND COLLABORATIVE ORGANISATIONEastern Riverina Arts aims to work in partnership with organisations at all levels to deliver sustainable cultural and arts development projects. Eastern Riverina Arts strives to be an organisation that maintains its current membership and increases its membership through its relevance to the work of other potential organisations. Eastern Riverina Arts seeks to be highly visible in the community through active participation in regionally based networks, steering committees, and working parties and regular liaison with Local Councils and community organisations.

MEMBERSHIPeastern riverina arts welcomed Young shire council in 2013 into the organisation. our membership now includes eleven of the thirteen local Government areas in our region. in line with the strategic plan eastern riverina arts aims to maintain its current membership and add one new council member a year.

WORKING GROUPS, STEERING COMMITTEES, ADVISORY PANELSour raDo sits on the WAGGA WAGGA BASE HOSPITAL ART STRATEGY WORKING GROUP, assisting murrumbidgee local health District develop strategies for delivering the art in public places plan developed by eastern riverina arts for the redevelopment of the Wagga Wagga Base hospital. the plan aims to embed a number of public art and art & health projects into the construction of the new hospital, including major sculptural commissions and generation of artwork.

he also sits on the DRAMATIC MINDS REGIONAL

ADVISORY GROUP assisting in providing strategic direction for the Dramatic mind festival. it is a drama festival for high schools that encourages the creation of short plays around themes of mental health. it is a partnership between murrumbidgee local health District, the nsW Department of education and the rural adversity mental health program. now in its fifth year Dramatic minds has expanded to three events in temora, Wagga Wagga and albury, with the majority of schools participating from our region.

our raDo has been appointed for a two year term as the industry representative on Wagga Wagga city council’s Public Art Advisory Committee. the committee will provide recommendations to the council on the delivery of the public art plan.

he also sits on the ASHMONT PLACEMAKING GROUP assisting in the implementation of arts and cultural activity around the ashmont shopping centre for the benefit of the community.

GOAL 3BE AN EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE FOR OUR REGION’S ARTISTS, ARTS ORGANISATIONS AND CULTURAL AND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES PRACTITIONERS AT LOCAL, REGIONAL, STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELEastern Riverina Arts seeks to effectively advocate for the region’s cultural and creative practitioners through participating in and presenting at forums, summits and conferences; answer calls for public submissions into arts, cultural and other relevant policy development at all levels of government. Eastern Riverina Arts aims to promote widely the achievements of our region’s artists and arts organisations.

nsW Government cultural policY reference Groupin 2013 the hon. George souris, minister for the arts appointed scott howie to the nsW cultural policy reference Group. the five-member reference group is tasked with guiding work on the state’s first arts and cultural policy, which will outline a vision and 10-year strategy for arts and culture in nsW.

riverina Destination manaGement planninG consultationeastern riverina arts attended consultations to ensure the presence of cultural tourism was well represented in the riverina’s Destination management plan. eastern riverina arts also provided feedback to riverina regional tourism on the draft plan.

arts nsW funDinG proGram revieWeastern riverina arts made a submission to the arts funding review, stressing the importance of small funding

programs like casp and other devolved funding programs through service organisations.

faces of ashmontin 2013 a case study of the faces of ashmont project, a photographic exhibition by David maloy at the ashmont art space was published in the camra toolkit All Culture Is Local: Good practice in Regional Cultural Mapping and Planning from Local Government. it examines how a simply executed arts project produced authentic insights from a community typically disengaged from ‘traditional’ consultation processes.

Great DeBateto ensure that the value of the arts is discussed publicly, we partnered with aBc riverina and the Wagga Wagga civic theatre to present a comic debate, that “theatre is better than sports”. the debate drew together key figures from the arts and sports community of Wagga Wagga and was later broadcast on aBc riverina.

This may be through attendance and participation at our events, workshops and performances or through seeking advice and assistance from our organisation or accessing our services such as the artist register, cultural directory, e-newsletters and online fact sheets.

auspicinG serviceeastern riverina arts auspiced a successful application by Ganmain-based artists the ronalds to arts nsW for the development of new work ahead of a major exhibition at a regional gallery in 2015.

eastern riverina arts also auspiced a quick response professional development grant from arts nsW by sue harding to attend a 3D printing masterclass in adelaide. sue is interested in how 3D printing technology may be applied to her own animation practice.

communitY/Youth proJectsdlaBeastern riverina arts through a partnership arrangement with Wagga Wagga city council are providng ongoing local co-ordination and support for dluxmediaart’s dlaB project. the core of the dlab program is directed to up-skilling young people and local facilitators with a special focus on young women from calD and indigenous backgrounds. By using art, media and technology as a tool to engage young people into the sciences for community development. By building confidence through hands-on learning, the dlab program encourages individuals to move from simply participating in the program to being collaborators in projects. as a partner organisation we are working collaboratively to build the resources and infrastructure to sustain community initiatives as well as to create access for continued learning and opportunities for career development.

connect the DotsWith funding from the telstra foundation, eastern riverina arts has developed a creative digital media kit as a resource for local governments and community groups in our region. alongside the kit, workshops have been provided at major youth events in the region including oursounds, Westfest and take charge where scott howie presented a workshop to 120 youth leaders from the region on using social media for Good. throughout 2013 project officer thom paton worked with youth officers

in the region developing small projects, workshops and access to the media kit.

fresh | Dance | filmfresh | Dance | film is an exciting two year project which commenced in 2013. it works across six towns in the region, coolamon, tumut, tumbarumba, temora, the rock and urana. local hip-hop dancer centennial tuvale has been providing a series of nine two-day workshops to high-school aged participants, and so far has worked with over 80 young people. the workshops form part of an ongoing process where each group has learnt basic choreography and dance moves. then, working with guidance, the participants will form their own routines and work with a local filmmaker to capture them in a way that will also highlight the community and landscape of their region.

ashmont art spaceeastern riverina arts manages a shopfront exhibition space in the ashmont shopping mall. featured exhibitions in 2013 included faces of ashmont, Yindyamarra, an exhibitions of collaborative works by aboriginal students of shepherds park education and training unit located in the riverina Juvenile Justice centre, and video work by students participating in dlaB.

featureD artisteach month we feature an artist from our region on the front page of our website and in our e-newsletter. the artists featured in 2013 were painters Jenny forster (tumut), Jenny newbound (Wagga) and tudor price-Jones (temora), photomedia artists the ronalds (Ganmain), printmaker felicity hibble (Wagga), filmmaker John riddell (Batlow), animator sue harding (Wagga) and young, emerging dancers sharna solomon and tyrone hoeler (Wagga) and photographer Jacob raupach (Wagga).

social meDia2013 was the year we really embraced social media. over the year we increased our facebook likes from 246 to 607.our 230 posts reached over 49000 people.

We made the switch back to mailchimp for our e-newsletter and are seeing continual growth in our subscriber base as well as in our open rates.

meDiathe presence of a dedicated communications position has seen a rise in the number of media stories placed, particularly around our larger projects, 8 artists, Dream Big and short + sweet. in 2013, we have received media coverage from newspapers in cootamundra, Young, West Wyalong, temora, tumut and tumbarumba, as well as prime television. aBc riverina continues to be supportive, with our raDo regularly interviewed on the morning show.

GOAL 5HAVE DIVERSIFIED INCOME STREAMS TO ENSURE OUR FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITYEastern Riverina Arts is committed to increasing and diversifying its income stream to ensure our financial sustainability and to expand the services we offer. Over the next three years Eastern Riverina Arts will aim to increase its funding through grants from Government and non-government funding bodies, increasing its earned income from membership fees, fees for services and box office. Eastern Riverina Arts will seek DGR endorsement and develop a philanthropic donation stategy.

eastern riverina arts has had a strong financial year in 2013. the increase in core funding from arts nsW coupled with higher than expected earned revenue through increased membership, increase in contracted fees for services as well as successful project grant applications meant a productive and financially healthy year for the organisation.

the trend of earned income increasing as a percentage of total income continued in 2013, a remarkable feat given the 35% increase in core funding.

in 2013 eastern riverina arts increased total income by 54% on 2012 income while expenditure increased by 57%. the income growth has been driven by the boost in our core funding. a surplus of $29,413 was retained ahead of major capital replacement and relocation expenses in 2014.

income diversification continues to be a key focus and is

becoming increasingly more important. the expectation from our key funding partner to increase our revenue from other sources has been well met in 2013. 2014 will see a focus on the development of a philanthropic strategy.

Key grants received in 2013 include the regional arts fund for fresh | Dance | film, a regional art nsW prop-up grant for the string contingent, one of eight grants awarded and the arts and Disability fund from arts nsW and aDhc for 8 artists and a grant from screen nsW for the onscreen riverina program to be delivered in 2014.

sponsorship income was minimal and represents a potential area for income diversification, either for the organisation as a whole or for key events.

Eastern Riverina Arts seeks to be an effectively governed and managed organisation whose Board is able to fulfil its roles and obligations responsibly. This will occur through regular review of the Board and its members, the organisation’s policies and procedures, and providing opportunities for professional development for Board members and staff on governance and management issues.

the board also has two sub-commitees, one for finance and one for Governance. the finance sub-committee oversaw an overhaul of our chart of accounts and a 6-monthly budget review, while the Governancecommittee undertook a review of current policy gaps and developed a new auspicing policy.

professional Developmentthree times throughout the year our raDo attends regional arts nsW network meetings providing opportuities to engage with other raDos from across the state and to meet with federal and state departments and arts organisations.

the communications officer has regular teleconferences and an annual face-to-face meeting with the communication officers from the regional arts Boards.
