SKIDMORE STREAKING: Zach Skidmore is currently riding a career-best 10-game hitting streak dating back to March 31. It’s the third longest active hit streak in the OVC. He has also hit safely in 22 of the last 24 games and reached base safely in all but one contest (game two of the Tennessee Tech doubleheader) this season. The senior has posted six multi-hit efforts during his 10-game streak and homered in each of the last three games. KREKE POW FOR A THIRD TIME: For the third time in the last four weeks, Jordan Kreke was selected as the OVC Player of the Week, extending the Panthers’ league record of consecutive POW selections to five. Kreke was a unanimous pick again. He was also named the league’s top-performing position player on March 23 and 30. Classmate Brett Nommensen, meanwhile, won the award on March 16 and April 6. Kreke is the first OVC position player to be honored three times in a season. He was 10-for-17 with four doubles, three homers, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored last week. He hit a three-run shot in Wednesday’s win against Indiana State and posted his second multi-homer game in Saturday’s rubber game win at UT Martin. He has reached base safely in every game he has batted and also leads the OVC with 11 home runs. Baseball America’s lead college writer Aaron Fitt selected a nine-player lineup based on positions along with a utility player (pitcher and hitter). The pitching staff featured six hurlers. Fresno State’s Tom Mendonca (third base), San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg (starting pitcher) and Nommensen were the only three players among the 15 recognized that play for universities not affiliated with the big six BCS conferences... Nommensen is currently limited to a pinch-runner role due to a hand injury. His status for the rest of the season will be announced next week.

MUELLER GOES THE DISTANCE: Josh Mueller pitched the first nine-inning complete game by a Pan-ther since 2007 in the April 10 win at UT Martin. He struck out a season-high nine in his second career complete game. He scattered eight hits and surrendered only two earned runs. Mueller struck out five of the final six batters he faced, retiring the final seven batters of the contest in consecutive fashion. He has pitched at least six innings in each of his last six starts... Last season, Mueller pitched a seven-inning complete game in the nightcap of the OVC-opening doubleheader against Morehead State. Chris Vaculik threw the last nine-inning complete game by a Panther, beating Samford at home in April ‘07.

PANTHERS POST 13-GAME WIN STREAK: Eastern compiled a 13-game win streak from March 21 to April 10, the program’s longest in the OVC era (1997-present). It was the longest active streak in the coun-try when it came to an end in game two of the doubleheader at UT Martin. Overall, it ranks as the fourth longest win streak in the country this season. The Panthers started OVC play 8-0 in the process and also posted midweek wins against Saint Louis, Illinois State, Indiana State and Chicago State (twice).

EASTERN RANKED SECOND IN THE MIDWEST BY PING!: Ping!Baseball.com released its first set of regional rankings April 13 and EIU was second in the Midwest. Ohio State (26-6 entering the week) topped the Midwest Region rankings. The Panthers have posted wins against other highly-ranked Midwest teams, namely Indiana State (8th), Illinois (9th) and Illinois State (11th)... Eastern is also ranked second nationally in WarrenNolan.com’s national power rankings.

ReCCHia steLLaR in eVeRy staRt: Mike Recchia has emerged as EIU’s most consistent pitcher this season, winning each of his six weekend starts. He has gone at least five innings in each of those starts, surrendering no more than two earned runs each time out. His most impressive performances came in the ruu-ber-game win at Southeastern Louisiana (8 IP, 10 Ks) and vs. na-tionally-ranked Oklahoma (6 IP, 1 ER) in the championship game of South Florida’s Tournament. On two occasions, the game he was scheduled to start on a weekend was canceled due to inclement weather. So he started EIU’s next midweek game on both occasions and was just as effective. The sophomore right-hander enters the weekend leading the OVC in ERA and batting average against... Recchia started seven games a season ago, including EIU’s biggest win of the year – the OVC Tourna-ment victory against regular-season champion Jacksonville State. He worked 4 1/3 innings of three-run ball that night, striking out four and not issuing a walk.

HOMeR BinGe: During its recent hot stretch of 16 wins in 17 games, Eastern has erupted for 54 home runs. By comparison, EIU only hit 12 home runs in all of 2006. With 67 homers this year, the Panthers have already surpassed last year’s total (35). Eastern hit a season-high nine home runs in the April 11 road victory against Indiana State, the program’s most since bombing 10 long balls against Eastern Kentucky in 2003. The Panthers’ 30 runs in that win were the most in the program’s OVC era (1997-present)... Brett nommensen (at Indiana State and at Saint Louis), Zach skidmore (at Chicago State), Jordan Kreke (Tennessee Tech game one), Ben thoma (Indiana State), Jordan tokarz (Blackburn College) and Bart thyer (Blackburn College) have each posted a multi-homer game this season. Nommensen has also led off a game with a home run four times this year... The Panthers have hit multiple homers in a game 15 times this season. Since the beginning of the 2004 season, EIU has hit three-plus homers in a game on 23 occasions. Eastern has accomplished the feat 11 times this year.

LyOns tO Be inDuCteD intO HOF: Eastern assistant coach sean Lyons has been selected to the EIU Athletics Hall of Fame for his stellar Panther playing career and will be inducted in November. Lyons (1996-99) was one of the most consistent hitters for EIU baseball in the late 1990’s. He was a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection earning First Team honors in 1997 and 1998. Lyons has been an assistant at EIU since the fall of 2004 and has spearheaded the program’s recruiting. He also coaches third base, is the defensive instructor and works extensively with the hitters.

eiu tO RetiRe Pattin’s nuMBeR: Eastern Illinois athletics will be honoring one of its all-time greats, former pitcher Marty Pattin, during the April 18-19 series against Jacksonville State. Pattin will have his EIU No. 19 retired at the ceremony. Pattin was a member of the EIU baseball team from 1961-65, earning Second Team Little All-America honors in 1964 while leading the Panthers to the ‘64 NAIA World Series. He was 10-1 that season with a 1.99 ERA, leading the nation in strikeouts (118). Pattin still owns the EIU all-time record for Ks (278) and won 20 games during his career... Pattin went on to pitch for 13 seasons in the Major Leagues, most notably as a member of the Kansas City Royals. He was a 1971 American League All-Star. In his final Major League inning, he pitched in the 1980 World Series, striking out All-Stars Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt. A charter member of the EIU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982, Pattin was also inducted into the NAIA Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972... Current senior Ryan Lindquist will be the final EIU player to wear No. 19. That same weekend, EIU will also honor the 1999 EIU team that won the OVC regular-season and Tournament championship, and defeated Arizona at the NCAA Regional in Waco, Texas.

easteRn ReCeiVinG VOtes in natiOnaL POLLs: Eastern began receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 30 national poll and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 coaches’ poll on March 30. While continuing to receive votes in both polls, the Panthers also broke into Colle-giate Baseball’s Top 30 poll (at No. 27) April 6. It is believed to be EIU’s first-ever ranking as a Division I program (1982-present).

tK iMPRessiVe in COMPLete-GaMe PeRFORManCe: tyler Kehrer put together one of the finest performances of his three-year EIU career in game two of the April 4 doubleheader sweep of Murray State. The left-hander struck out eight in his seven-inning complete game (the first CG of his career), fanning the side in the fourth and seventh. Along with surrendering only three singles, he did not walk a batter. It marked the first time in Kehrer’s career that he did not issue a walk in an outing of at least two innings. More importantly, he out dueled OVC wins leader Daniel Calhoun, who was 6-0 entering the game.

nOMMy naMeD natiOnaL HitteR OF tHe WeeK: After reaching base safely in 14 of his 17 plate appearances the week of March 30-April 5, Brett nommensen was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s National Hitter of the Week. tOKaRZ’s 0-GaMe RBi stReaK: Jordan tokarz recently put together a streak in which he recorded an RBI in 10 straight games. For the season, Tokarz has knocked in at least one run in 20 of EIU’s 27 games. He put together his RBI streak from March 18 through April 1. Not surpris-ingly, the Panthers went 9-1 during that stretch... Since transferring to EIU from Elgin Community College in suburban Chicago in 2008, Tokarz has started every game at second base. He’s the only Panther that has been in the starting lineup every game the last two years, a streak of 89 consecu-tive contests.• tokarz’s 0-Game RBi streak: .297 (-for-37), 2 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 3 RBi, 3 R, 6 BB

FResHMen sOLiDiFy tHeiR sPOts: Gerik Wallsten and Zach Borenstein have seen the most playing time among EIU’s freshman class. Wallsten locked down the starting catcher position by the second weekend of the season and has started 22 of the first 32 games behind the dish. However, a recent wrist injury has sidelined a bit in mid-April. Borenstein joined the starting lineup in the March 10 loss at Indiana State, playing right field and some third base. He recently moved into the leadoff spot after the injury to Brett nommensen... Wallsten leads the team in with 10 sacrifice bunts, but has also demonstrated some power, collecting four doubles and four home runs in 66 at-bats. Eleven of his 19 RBIs have come with two outs. Defensively, he has only been charged with four passed balls and thrown out four would-be basestealers... Borenstein has been a very consistent hitter when he’s in the starting lineup. He has started 17 times since March 10, hitting safely in 16 of those games – including each of the last 11. The left-handed hitter has also recorded nine multi-hit efforts as a starter.• Borenstein as a starter: 29-for-67 (.433), 4 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBi, 2 R, 3 BB, sac, sB

sCHMitZ POsts 400tH eiu Win: Head coach Jim Schmitz posted his 400th career EIU win in game one of the doubleheader sweep of Murray State on April 4. The 15th-skipper became the program’s all-time winningest coach in February 2007 and recorded his 500th career win as a col-legiate coach later that season.

BiG GaMes FOR stRanG & RestKO: Cam strang posted his first career five-hit effort and Curt Restko recorded a personal-best five RBIs in EIU’s April 1 home win against Chicago State. The both scored three times each. Strang recorded four singles, a double and a sacrifice fly. Restko was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two singles and a sacrifice fly. Eastern pounded out 22 hits as team.

KReKe & ReCCHia DOMinate teCH: Jordan Kreke posted career highs in hits (5) and RBIs (8) in game one and Mike Recchia pitched a two-hit shutout in the nightcap, leading EIU to a double-header sweep of Tennessee Tech, 25-5 and 2-0, March 29. Kreke hit a pair of three-run homers in game one en route to tying the EIU single-game RBI record. Richie Derbak recorded his second career five-hit effort in game one, homering in his second at-bat. Zach Borenstein and Gerik Wall-sten also went deep in the blowout win. Jordan tokarz hit a solo shot in the third inning of game two... Recchia struck out nine in his first career complete-game shutout. He did not give up a hit until the sixth inning. A.J. Kirby Jones broke up the right-hander’s no-hit bid with a two-out single.

KReKe RePeats as PLayeR OF tHe WeeK: For recording 10 RBIs and 11 hits while leading EIU to a 4-0 week, Jordan Kreke became the first player to repeat as the OVC Player of the Week since 2006. The senior shortstop and relief pitcher was 11-for-18 with three home runs, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored last week. He tied an EIU single-game record with eight RBIs in Sunday’s 25-5 win vs. Tennessee Tech, six of the RBIs coming on a pair of three-run homers. He posted his first career five-hit effort Sunday as well... Eastern Kentucky’s Charlie Yarbrough was the last posi-tion player to repeat as the league’s OVC Player of the Week, accomplishing the feat on March 6 and 13, 2006. Yarbrough went on to win OVC Player of the Year honors and was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. With Brett nommensen having won OVC Player of the Week on March 16, EIU is the first program since 1995 to have three consecutive award recipients among position players. Former OVC member Middle Tennessee State accomplished the feat from April 24-May 8, 1995.• Kreke’s two-Week Run as POW: 22-for-37 (.595), 2B, 3B 6 HR, 22 RBi, 5 R, BB

FiRst sHutOut Win in a WHiLe: Mike Recchia pitched a complete-game two-hitter (in a sched-uled seven-inning game) in the March 29 win against Tennessee Tech. It was EIU’s first victory in shutout fashion since February 2007 in a neutral-site game against Chicago State. The Panthers had not shutout a conference foe since a May 2006 home victory against Morehead State. Recchia joins Josh Mueller as active Panthers with a complete game on his EIU résumé. However, Recchia is the first EIU pitcher to pitch a complete-game shutout since Mike Manns in a March 2006 seven-inning victory at Tennessee Tech.

stReaKs enD in niGHtCaP OF teCH tWinBiLL: After scoring 25 runs on 20 hits in game one of the Tennessee Tech doubleheader, the Panthers only managed two runs on four hits in the nightcap. Thankfully Mike Recchia picked up the slack and pitched a two-hit shutout. However, the career-best hitting streaks of Brett nommensen (15) and Jordan Kreke (11) both came to an end in the win. Nommensen had also hit safely in 12 straight OVC games dating back to last season, another streak that was snapped.• nommy’s 5-Game Hit streak: 29-for-56 (.58), 4 XBH, 6 HR, 3 RBi, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 sB• Kreke’s -Game Hit streak: 28-for-5 (.549), 2 2B, 3B, 6 HR, 25 RBi, 9 R, 3 BB, sB

DeRBaK’s 7-GaMe Hit stReaK enDs: Richie Derbak hit safely in each of the first 17 games in which batted this season, compiling a career-best hit-ting streak in the process. It ended in the March 25 win against Illinois State. The 17-game streak ranks as the longest among active Panthers. It’s also the second longest in the OVC this season. He collected multiple hits in 11 of the 17 games, including a streak of six consecutive multi-hit efforts (from March 7-15). He posted his first career five-hit game in the March 8 win against Milwaukee, registering a career-high three doubles and also hitting his first home run of the year (recording the first double-figure total base effort by a Panther since March 2007)... As a key part of the bullpen, Derbak has also pitched in a team-high 12 games, posting two victories and four saves. PantHeRs sWeeP Msu FOR FiFtH stRaiGHt yeaR: The Panthers opened Ohio Valley Conference play the weekend of March 21-22 by sweeping Morehead State for the fifth straight year, running their win streak to 17 straight games against the Eagles. Eastern posted season-highs in hits (24) and runs in Saturday’s 26-16 game one win. The Panthers hit nine home runs in the series, five coming in game one. The 26 runs were the most EIU had scored in a game since posting 27 in an April 2003 home win against Eastern Kentucky... Jordan Kreke delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning to lift EIU to the game two win. Kreke was 10-for-15 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in the weekend sweep... Mike Recchia improved to 4-0 with eight innings of four-hit ball in the series finale victory. Morehead didn’t score against him until the seventh inning.

a 7- sPRinG BReaK tRiP: The Panthers posted an impressive 7-1 record on their annual spring break trip. Eastern bookended the trek from Illinois to Florida to Kentucky with 3-0 weekends. The Panthers won the four-team Bulls Baseball Classic hosted by South Florida in Tampa, and began Ohio Valley Conference play with a three-game sweep at Morehead State. Eastern also defeated Indiana in a neutral-site game in Central Florida. The lone loss came at the hands of Bradley in a neutral-site affair... By winning seven of its eight games, EIU posted its best winning percentage on a spring break trip during the program’s OVC era (1997-present). Only the 1998 team’s 5-1 mark in Alabama could be considered comparable. The ’98 squad won each of its four games at a tournament hosted by Troy State, lost at Alabama and won at Samford before returning to the Midwest.

KReKe naMeD POW: Three home runs and 12 RBIs in the three-game series sweep of Morehead State earned Jordan Kreke OVC Player of the Week hon-ors on March 23. He collected 10 of his 11 hits for the week in the series sweep at Morehead. He homered in all three games, connecting for solo shots in both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader and hitting a three-run bomb in the series fi-nale Sunday. Kreke finished the week 11-for-19 with five extra-base hits, seven runs scored and 12 RBIs. He was also flawless in his 16 defensive chances. On the mound, meanwhile, he earned his first career victory with 2 1/3 innings of one-run relief in the St. Patrick’s Day win against Indiana. He closed out the game, retiring seven of the eight batters he faced.

He has served as the bullpen’s long-relief ace each of his upperclassman seasons. The Quincy native carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in biological sciences. He was an ESPN the Magazine Second Team Academic All-America honoree as a junior. Unfortunately, he was not selected as one of the 10 finalists for the award. That list was announced April 15... Morrell was the third EIU student-athlete this school year to be selected as a candidate for the award. Adam Gartner of men’s soccer and Rachel Galligan of women’s basketball were later chosen as one of 10 finalists nationally for their sports’ awards.

RestKO’s 0-GaMe stReaK enDs: Curt Restko put together a 10-game hitting streak, the longest of his career, from Feb. 27 through March 17. He posted seven multi-hit efforts during the streak, including four straight in the fi-nal four games of the run. Restko also collected an RBI in five straight games.• Restko’s 0-Game Hitting streak: 8-for-32 (.563), 7 RBi, 6 R, 6 BB

nOMMy & ReCCHia sWeeP OVC WeeKLy aWaRDs: For their prominent roles in EIU’s team title at the Bulls Baseball Classic in Tampa, Brett nom-mensen and Mike Recchia were named the OVC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on March 16. Nommensen was 11-for-18 with seven ex-tra-base hits, including a pair of leadoff home runs, and seven runs scored. Recchia pitched six-plus innings of four-hit ball in the March 15 victory against 15th-ranked Oklahoma in the championship game of South Florida’s four-team tournament. The sophomore right-hander gave up only one earned run and four singles... Nommensen was the first Panther to be named Player of the Week since Erik Huber in April 2007. Recchia became the first Panther to be named Pitcher of the Week since alex Guttosch in May 2006. However, Gut-tosch garnered his honor for a pair of long-relief outings in an OVC series sweep of Austin Peay. May of 2005 marked the last time an EIU starter was recognized as the Pitcher of the Week... Nommensen was also selected to the College Baseball Foundation’s National All-Star Lineup on March 18.

0 Wins By st. PatRiCK’s Day: Eastern posted its 10th victory of the season with a come-back win against Indiana on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). During EIU’s Ohio Valley Conference era (1997-present), only the 1998 team reached 10 wins sooner. The ‘98 squad won its 10th game on March 15 on the way to winning a program-record 37 games and a regular-season conference title. Eastern’s 6-4 start, meanwhile, represented the second-best record through 10 games during the OVC era. The 1998 team began the season 7-3... Coincidentally, EIU’s two NCAA Regional-qualify-ing teams during the OVC era have both gotten off to slow starts. The 1999 team, which won the OVC regular-season and tourney crowns, started the year 0-10 but finished the season 33-23. Last year, the Panthers got off to an 0-7 start before eventually climbing over the .500 mark in mid-April. After suffering through an eight-game losing streak in late April, EIU got hot in May and won the OVC Tournament before finishing the season with a 27-30 mark.

PantHeRs naMeD MiDWest teaM OF tHe WeeK By CBt: For its team title at South Florida’s Bulls Baseball Classic the opening weekend of spring break, EIU was named the Midwest Team of the Week by the Web site CollegeBaseballToday.com. National college baseball writer Eric Soren-son’s Web site is sponsored by Easton and carries the tag line: “a season-long study in the stitched ball nation.”

saMueLs’ sWeet staRt: Jake samuels began his EIU career swinging a hot bat. Heading out on the spring break trip, he was 7-for-10 in his limited at-bats. He recorded a pinch-hit single in each of his first two at-bats as a Panther and finally earned a start at first base in the March 8 win against Milwaukee. He made the most of the start, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three runs scored. Samuels went on to hit safely in each of the first four games that he started, before that streak ended in the win vs. Indiana.

tOKaRZ’s stReaK snaPPeD at 2: Jordan tokarz’s career-best 12-game hit streak dating back to last season ended March 7 in the win against Milwaukee. He recorded a hit in each of the first six games of the new year after hitting safely in each of EIU’s six postseason contests last year. His previous career-long streak was nine games, posting it in March of 2008 (including all eight games of the spring break trip in Florida)... Remarkably, with seven RBIs (all coming with two outs) in the season-opening series at Southeastern Louisiana, Tokarz matched his total from the 2008 postseason.• tokarz’s 2-Game streak: 23-for-54 (.426), 6 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBi, 4 R

tK Fans 2: tyler Kehrer struck out a career-high 12 and surrendered just one hit in only five in-nings in the Feb. 28 win over Butler. Twelve of the 15 outs he recorded came via the strikeout. How-ever, he also issued six walks, running up his pitch count and ending his day early. The performance is believed to be the most Ks by an EIU pitcher since 2001. Pete Martin fanned 11 over 6 1/3 innings in game two of the home-opening doubleheader sweep of Eastern Kentucky.

RestKO LiFts eiu tO WaLK-OFF Win: Curt Restko singled to right field with the bases loaded and one-out in the bottom of the ninth inning of the Feb. 28 win against Butler, lifting the Panthers to 7-6 walk-off win. Restko joined Brett nommensen as active Panthers with a walk-off hit on their résumés. Nommensen deliv-ered a game-winning single in a March 2008 win against Morehead State... Eastern has posted 10 walk-off wins since the beginning of the 2004 season. Seven of those 10 wins have come at Coaches Stadium. The Panthers also won a pair of neutral-site games in walk-off fashion during the 2006 spring break trip at the Florida All-Star Challenge in Bradenton.

nOMMy’s OVeRLaPPinG stReaK enDs at 4: Brett nommensen’s career-long, 14-game hitting streak (dating back to last season) ended in the finale of the season-opening series at South-eastern Louisiana. He still managed to reach base safely three times in the rubber game win, draw-ing two walks (one intentional) and getting hit by a pitch in the ninth inning. Nommensen hit safely in the final 12 games of the 2008 season, and the final 15 games in which he was a member of the starting lineup.• nommy’s 4-Game streak: 32-for-56 (.57), 2 XBH, 4 HR, 4 RBi, 23 R

PantHeRs PiCKeD seCOnD: With eight starting position players and a large part of the pitching staff returning from last season’s OVC Tournament championship team, Eastern Illinois received four first-place votes and was tabbed second in the league’s preseason coaches poll. The Panthers finished only one poll point (61-60) behind defending regular-season champ Jacksonville State, which garnered the other five first-place votes. This marks the highest EIU has been picked in the preseason poll since also being tabbed second in 2003.
