  • welcome to the2017 Fremantle International

Street Arts Festival Fremantle International Street Arts Festival (FISAF) is a cornerstone event in the City of Fremantle’s annual calendar and a key contributor to our burgeoning international reputation as a festival city.

Over the Easter long weekend, the streets of Fremantle become an open-air stage for the world’s best street theatre, busking, comedy, dance, music, circus and cabaret.

Fremantle has long been recognised as a hub for arts and culture and FISAF is an example of this at its very best. Each year our beautiful city comes alive with locals and visitors alike joining in the street party vibe; local traders extend onto the streets day and night, amplifying Freo’s famous alfresco atmosphere; and the best international talent is accessible for all to revel in.

I hope you enjoy perusing the program and choosing your own FISAF experience. From the alluring to the challenging, there is a breadth of incredible unique entertainment for you to enjoy in the vibrant streets and parks of Fremantle.

    Dr Brad Pettitt FREMANTLE MAYOR

Welcome to the 19th annual Fremantle International Street Arts Festival.

Regarded as one of Australia’s biggest and best street arts festivals, the event continues to attract more than 100,000 people to the port city of Fremantle to enjoy a range of extraordinary performances from comedy and circus to acrobatics and cabaret.

This year’s program boasts more than 30 world-class local and international acts from countries such as Australia, UK, USA, Canada, Lithuania, Japan, Belgium, Spain, New Zealand the Netherlands and Sweden.

Some highlights include an interactive outdoor theatre piece delving into the secret love life of plants by UK’s Romantic Botanic, a wondrous old fashioned butchery market by Boucherie Bacul from Belgium, and Spanish award-winning dance duo Te Odiero.

The Fremantle International Street Arts Festival is proudly sponsored by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia.

Tourism is a vital industry for Western Australia, contributing $9.6 billion to the State in the year ending September 2016.

Events are important as they not only add vibrancy to WA, they also raise awareness of the State through media exposure and attract visitors who inject billions into the economy.

The City of Fremantle is undergoing a significant revitalisation with more than $1.3 billion worth of private and public investment in the pipeline transforming the city into an even more vibrant destination, with new hotels, restaurants and bars.

I encourage visitors to take some time and explore this changing city and appreciate its rich culture, laidback atmosphere, heritage buildings and fascinating maritime and convict history.

I hope everyone enjoys the festival and their time in Fremantle.

Energetic, irreverent and with a do-it-yourself approach to instrumentation and attire, Honk bands perform to celebrate; to proclaim; some play for peace; some for activist causes; for community spirit; and all of them play to have fun. They take their musical inspiration from Mardi Gras and Carnival, and from street music gatherings across Europe and South America.
