Easter pilgrimage to tackle the big issues The Right Rev’d John Roundhill, Bishop for the Southern Region,

is taking on a walk of biblical proportions over Easter in a bid to

tackle the big issues facing today’s society. Bishop John plans to

cover 160km on foot in eight days, and will carry a Bishop’s

crosier (a shepherd’s crook), as he strides out between 10 and

35km each day, starting at St Francis’ College, Milton, travelling

via Manly, climbing Mount Tamborine and ending at St John’s

Anglican Church, Burleigh Heads on Easter Sunday. Along the

way he will invite people to join him to talk about the “big issues” – climate change,

multiculturalism, immigration

and people seeking asylum,

religion and, to a lesser

extent, politics. Bishop John

hopes to play Pied Piper to

a support crew of hundreds

of people for his “Talking

the Talk, walk the walk (to

Church)” in Holy Week from

14 to 21 April.

Follow Bishop John’s journey

online. Fellow walkers are

invited to join Bishop John

on any part of the route.

‘PERSERVERING IN FAITH’

Led by The Rev’d Canon Ian Howarth

Benedictine Spirituality will be the focus of this five-day,

four-night retreat. St Benedict’s Rule is a deeply biblical

and practical way of living out faith in community. While

over 1500 years old, it continues to be relevant not only

in monasteries, but for Christians in everyday life.

Through reflection on Listening, Prayer, and Holy

Reading, along with other tools that come to light in St

Benedict’s writing and through his many advocates,

participants will explore the simple means by which we

can seek the presence of God to enlighten and sustain

our souls and bodies.

This will be a mostly silent retreat, with silence observed

during the day and opportunities for conversation and

fellowship in the evening. Further details and

registration here.

10 WEDNESDAY WEEKLY | News, information and events for the Anglican Church Southern Queensland community

Social Engineering Fraud is a lucrative and alarmingly

easy form of cyber fraud which is growing exponentially,

and has in fact struck a number of Diocesan arms over

the past few months.

Interpol defines social engineering fraud as “scams used

by criminals to trick, deceive and manipulate their

victims into giving out confidential information and

funds. Criminals exploit a person’s trust in order to find

out their banking details, passwords or other data”.

Real examples from our own experience include:

The last two

examples were the

subject of claims on

our insurers –

however it is

important to be

aware that our

insurance coverage

for crimes of this

nature is limited,

expensive to

purchase, and carries

an excess.

These crimes are

actually easy to avoid

– simply by

introducing a policy

which requires a

phone call to be

made to anyone that

requests a change in

account payee

details, to confirm

those details are in

fact bona fide.

If at any time you

feel concerned or

suspicious about a

potential transaction

that is in front of

you, please feel free

to contact the ANFIN

team (07) 3835 2355

for guidance.

For more information,

please see here or

here.

After investigation by ANFIN staff it was found that the

“donation” was sourced from a stolen credit card, and

the refund request was to an entirely separate account

which would likely have been cleared immediately on

receipt of the $18,000 – should we have made that

payment. This rapid action by ANFIN resulted in the

entire funds being returned to their rightful owner.

On later investigation it was found that the contractors

email system had been hacked, and used to send

fraudulent communications to us.

What is Social Engineering Fraud?

A Diocesan entity was carrying out some works, and

received an expected invoice to be paid. Very shortly

afterwards they received an email from the contractor

concerned advising that the bank account details on

the invoice were incorrect, and supplying an alternative

account. The invoice amount was then paid to that

account.

A $20,000 donation being credited to a Diocese fund.

Shortly after the funds were received we received a

very apologetic email from the donor, advising they

had inadvertently made a “fat finger” error as they

only intended to donate $2,000 and could we please

refund $18,000 to a nominated account?

A Diocesan entity was preparing a payroll entry, and

received an email from a staff member requesting a

change to their bank account details. This was

actioned, and that fortnight’s salary was sent to the

new account.

On later investigation it was found that a fraudster had

created an email account which closely resembled that of a

staff member, and used that to issue the instruction to

payroll.

EARTH DAY 2019 - PROTECT OUR SPECIES

“In nature, nothing exists alone.” — Rachel Carson, 1962

Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of species that

we know and love, and many more that remain to be

discovered. Unfortunately, human beings have irrevocably

upset the balance of nature and, as a result, the world is

facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the

dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the

fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our

world today is the result of human activity. See here for

more details.

Are you seeking a faith formation program through which

your child can experience and form an authentic, faithful

relationship with God?

What is The CGS? An internationally renowned faith

formation program for children three to twelve years old

based upon Montessori educational principles. It provides

children with the opportunity to work with sensorial rich

materials representing the essentials of the Christian

message. This allows them to hear the gospel, experience

and form a loving relationship with God first proclaimed to

them through Jesus the Good Shepherd.

What is the Atrium? A sacred space or room specifically set

aside for the program. It is prepared by a Catechist, an adult

specially trained to facilitate the program. The atrium is a

place for community and worship rather than academic

study. The children listen to scripture, sing, pray, learn about

Anglican liturgical worship and work with the materials.

Where is the new Atrium? Anglican Church of the

Annunciation, 101 Watson St, Camp Hill.
