What Easter Was Like In Medieval Times Easter was one of the very important holidays in medieval times. Easter celebrated the birth of new life lots of religious meanings and influences including children rolling eggs down hills and searching for them in hidden places. Easter was a time of lots of religion and feasting, they would be with one another sharing all of the rituals and traditions together. This day was like Christmas is today, there was a lot of celebration, fun, gifts, dancing, music, entertainment, and above all rituals and ceremonies that really make this holiday what it is now. Easter hade a lot of different types of symbols that stand for an assortment of different elements that are in this Holliday. Easter was a day to celebrate a new life or begging so they would have rituals and traditions. One of the many traditions that people would do was collect eggs to celebrate a new life, and celebrate Jesus's resurrection. They would collect the eggs during lent (6 weeks of long fasting) when you could not eat any eggs; they had pancake day before lent to get rid of all the eggs in their homes. Then boil the eggs in salt water so that the chicks would not hatch out of their eggs and get destroyed before they got eaten during easter. The eggs would get painted or dyed, mostly with red for blood of Christ. The red eggs would be hidden from the children, who joyfully hunted them down; the hunt symbolized apostles finding Jesus's tomb. Along with hunting down eggs children would be with family and friends to celebrate the new life and celebrate Jesus's resurrection; the rich or wealthy would reunite friendships with one another. The poor would get to feast if they left the lord something in return like a young animal, sheep, goat, other small animal, or a little bit of food. Parishioners sang hymns while the sun rose and church bells rang out; afterwords the priest led the people in at around noon when the church services started. When church service would start they would celebrate a new life or beginning; to show this, people would get new clothes. Sometimes this was the only time in the whole year a person would buy a new garment. This holiday was named Easter, which was delivered from a pagan goddess of spring named Easre; she is represented with the Easter bunny, but back in the medieval days, she was known as the Easter hare. The Easter lily was white and most white objects were pure like clothing (white clothing was worn at most holy events because it was pure gust like the easter lily and other white objects where). Easter was one of people's favorite holidays especially back then in the medieval times; it was probably one of the most sacred of them. There were lots of rituals and meanings in this holiday and there was lots of sharing and celebration with family and friends. One of the best events that people looked forward to in this holiday was not having to work; even the servants did not have to work so that they could be with there family and friends. There are lots of different symbols that mean an assortment of different types of definitions and meanings in Easter that we still use to this day, which have evolved from the medieval times.
