    EASTER BLESSINGS! from

Father David, Father Louis, Deacon John T, Deacon John C, Deacon Tom, Deacon Edgar,

    and the entire parish staff.

This is the day the Lord hath made: let us be glad and rejoice in it!

From the vantage point of the choir gallery in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one can witness one of the most inspiring and awesome moments of the liturgical year. It occurs during the Easter Vigil. The vigil service begins with the Cathe-dral in total darkness. The procession leaves the sacristy and proceeds to the rear of the Cathedral up the center aisle, all the while in darkness. There the Cardinal lights the Easter fire. The rubrics specify that it be a rogus ardens, a blazing fire, to dispel the darkness and light up the night. Those assembled should be able to feel its warmth and see its light. The Cardinal then blesses the fire, praying that by these celebrations those assembled might be so inflamed with heaven-ly desires that, with minds made pure, they might come to the festival of God’s undying radiance. The paschal candle is lit from the fire. The Cardinal inscribes a cross thereon, together with the Greek letters alpha and omega, and the numerals of the current year, while saying: “Christ, yesterday and today; the Beginning of all things and their End; the Alpha and the Omega. All time belongs to Him, and all the ages; to Him be glory and domin-ion for all eternity, world without end.” These are ancient words, steeped in mystery and significance. They go to the very heart of who God is. The great and eternal “I AM.” Then, inserting five grains of incense, the Cardinal prays: ”By His holy and glorious wounds may Christ the Lord guard and keep us.” Lighting a candle from the paschal candle, the Cardinal prays: “May the light of Christ rising in glory scatter the darkness of heart and mind.” The procession proceeds up the center aisle. Reaching the middle of the Cathedral, the deacon intones: “Christ, our Light.” Then comes the most stirring moment. From the one flame atop the paschal candle, the light of Christ, the candles held by all in the assembled congregation are lit. From the vantage point of the choir gallery, one can see that single flame spreading out across the darkened Cathedral to light the candles of over 2500 persons gathered below. A single flame, lighting many others, but itself never being in any way diminished. That light, fanning out across the Cathedral, symbolizes the grace, and the mercy, and the love of God. Always generously and lavishly being doled out to us sinners. Darkness is well known to us: suffering, betrayal, wickedness, idolatry, evil. But Christ is the light that dispels this darkness. The light that gives joy and meaning to our lives. This is why we come. We come to hear the Easter Proclamation, the Exultet: “Exult hosts of heaven! Let the trumpet of salva-tion sound aloud our mighty King’s triumph! Let earth be glad as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King! This is the night that sets Christian believers apart from worldly vices and the gloom of sin; the night when Christ broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld. A fire into many flames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light. O truly blessed night, when things of heaven are wed to those of earth, and divine to the human. Christ has shed His peaceful light on humanity, and lives and reigns forever.”

Wishing you and your families and very blessed and joyous Easter. Rejoice! He is risen!

The Catholic Perspective on End-of-Life Care and the Dangers

of Doctor-Prescribed Suicide Recently in New Jersey, a “Death with Dignity” bill was passed by the legislature and is expected to be signed into law. It would legalize doctor-prescribed suicide in our state. But what does “Death with Dig-nity” really mean? What does the church teach about life- sustaining healthcare decisions? The OLMV Lazarus Ministry has invited guest speaker Jennifer Ruggiero, Director of the Office of Human Life & Dignity for the Diocese of Metuchen to present a workshop addressing the following topics: Advance Directives for Health Care, Nutrition and Hydra-tion, Proportionate Care, Palliative Care and the Dangers of Doctor-Prescribed Suicide Legislation. Please join us on Monday, April 29 at 7:00PM in the Parish Center Cafeteria, to know the Catholic Church’s teaching on End-of-Life issues.
