THE COLLECT Almighty God whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life that we may steadfastly follow His steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 8 beginning at the 26th verse An angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert road. And he rose and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a minister of the Can'dace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot." So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "How can I, unless some one guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this: "As a sheep led to the slaughter or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken up

Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth. "I will not leave you desolate; I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

We therefore bring you these gifts, and we ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, . . . (BCP, CPWI page 135)

The late John H. McKenna, Professor of Theology at St. John's University, Queens, NY for over 40 years - in an article entitled “Trinity, Holy Spirit and Epiclesis” made the point that in modern Eucharistic prayers, the Holy Spirit has been given much prominence.

He observed that in new Eucharistic prayers one can easily identify an epiclesis or an invocation on the Holy Spirit to bless and hallow the bread and wine of Holy Communion.

There is in fact in most eucharistic prayers, what is known as a split epiclesis; that is a prayer to bless and sanctify the gifts as mentioned above and in addition a prayer that we have the effects of partaking in the Holy Communion- such as unity, constancy and peace, see BCP, CPWI page 137.

McKenna scrutinized this split in his book The Eucharistic Epiclesis: A Detailed History from the Patristic to the Modern Era; but for our reflection and purpose what matters is that we comprehend the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

The liturgical community at worship appeals toGod almighty not only to make the elements become holy; but to make us holy.

We can apply the age old dictum made famous by Prosper of Aquitaine Lex orandi, lex credendi (Latin loosely translated as "the law of praying [is] the law of believing")

We believe as the Holy Gospel tells us that the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit dwells within us (John 14:15 - 17)

Both the Holy Gospel and the Prayer Book text place a duty upon us to bear witness to the indwelling Spirit and to live out in our lives that for which we pray in the liturgy.

McKenna reminds us in that excellent article that we have a call to work for peace and unity in the world and that constancy and consistency are the hallmarks by which we live.

Our worship is more than words, and more the action of the liturgy, as important and impressive as these are.

What is of equal or more significance is our daily lives and conversation as we continue to reflect the divine life of Christ and as we hope that the Holly Spirit will lead us to the final victory.
