Dear Oswego East Families,

It is both exciting and somewhat sad that we are entering the final stretch of the school year. We have had a magnificent school year thus far and I am looking forward to all of the exciting activities and events we have remaining. As always, I want thank you for supporting THE Oswego East High School community. In Wolves Country, we believe that academic excellence is a

team effort and all of the wonderful accomplishments give testament to just how wonderful our school family is.

The month of April brings about a heightened sense of academic awareness due ti PARCC testing, SAT, Advanced Placement testing, and final exams in May. The fast pace action of high school can be a challenging time for any student and we are ensuring that all students receive the necessary support and guidance to achieve their goals. As we enter into the final phase of PARCC Assessment and begin other final assessment days, feel free to contact any member of the administration or Student Services if you have questions about testing guidelines and options. Oswego East High School is required to follow testing guidelines for all assessments, therefore preventing us from honoring certain requests that are outside of those guidelines. Administration and Student Services can assist with any questions or requests you may have about current and upcoming assessments. The New SAT will be given to juniors on April 12, 2016. Freshmen and sophomores will take the practice SAT. Seniors are encouraged to complete community service hours or visit colleges, as they will not be in attendance on April 12th. A PowerPoint presentation by the College Board has been placed on the main school webpage in order to provide you with detailed information about the New SAT. Please visit our school website and follow us on all of our social media sites for additional information.

I would also like to congratulate our amazing band students, Mrs. O’Neil and Mr. Rextroat, and our band parents for making the Disney Spring Break trip a huge success. Band students per-formed a concert and did a recording with a top Disney musician. Please read more about the trip and awards received on our school website.

April 10 – 16 is National Volunteer Week and I would like to thank and honor all of our parent and student volunteers who give countless hours of their precious time to support the Oswego East High School Community. We are a great school community but we are even better when dedicated volunteers give their time and energy to help with the success of our school. Please consider becoming a member of one of our great parent volunteer organizations such as Wolf Parents, PEGS (Parents for Excellence in a Global Society), PTAG (Partners for Talented and Gifted Education), Band Boosters, and Sports Boosters. We are currently in need of Wolf Par-ent Officers for the 2016-17 school. If you are interested, please contact the school for further information.

Finally, I am excited about several initiatives we have at Oswego East High School. As a Ma-rine, it is always a privilege to honor students who choose to serve their country after school. We have created a Wall of Honor in the main entrance of our school that will display the pic-tures of graduates who enlist in the Armed Services. Please help us get the word out about the Wall of Honor as we are seeking to recognize all graduates who have or are currently serving in the Armed Services. We have also started the process of forming an Oswego East Alumni As-sociation. This is a wonderful opportunity for all graduates to remain connected to Oswego East High School and hopefully return for class reunions in the future. Watch for more infor-mation about the OE Alumni Association. I look forward to seeing you at future events at Oswego East High School and throughout this great community. I am proud to report that the state of Oswego East High School is thriving and secure. Yours truly in service,

First Annual OEHS Film Festival!

Oswego East’s first annual Film Festival ran March 7-10. The student committee began meeting to plan the festival in October with Mrs. Stephanie Allen and Mr. Erik Korzcak. Students created a mission statement for the fest: The Oswego East Film Festival Committee strives to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their unique creativity within a community of like-minded film enthusiasts. They also created submission guidelines and a website (oefilmfest.weebly.com). Mrs. Xia Zuckert also joined to create the 24 Hour Challenge. These films had to

be made and submitted within 24 hours and were required to include a specified prop, line and setting. Students had to follow the rules of the festival and pass their films through a screening committee to be entered into the festival. Four films were submitted to the fest and an additional five were submitted to the 24 Hour Challenge. The films and film makers were:

Decrypt by Elizabeth Wolfinger – Official Judge Best Film Winner El Bigote, Mustaches of Fate by Tyler Massey

Creature by Claudia Steinolfson Indirect Expression of Love by Gabriel Panaligan – Audience Choice Winner

Wolves T.A.L.K. in February

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” — Helen Keller

Students at OEHS are committed to fostering a positive climate. Approximately 40 students from OEHS participated in leadership training in the fall to prepare for the T.A.L.K. (Teens Activating the Language of Kindness) program. The training focuses on effective communication, team-building skills, and diversity appreciation. Oswego East hosted our annual T.A.L.K. program both in the fall and again on February 25th. T.A.L.K. is a day long, in-school retreat that promotes communication amongst students and challenges them to break down stereotypes and the barriers of social cliques. Approximately 150 participated in this retreat. T.A.L.K. welcomed keynote speaker, Eddie Slowikowski who teaches students that the positive actions of one person can have a ripple effect on a whole community. The rest of the day was filled with small and large group discussions and activities that challenged students to take personal risks. As students communicate, they learn that they are a lot more similar to one another than they are different. T.A.L.K. encourages students to demonstrate their acceptance for peers and practice the lifelong skills of working with and embracing differences. Thank you to OEHS for supporting such a worthwhile program and to OFEE (Oswego Foundation for Educational Excellence) who awarded a grant to help fund the program.

Attention Dual Credit Students and Parents Registration for Dual Credit classes will be sent home soon. Students enrolled in a dual credit class will need to return the forms to Student Services by April 17, 2016. There is a small fee of $8 per credit hour for dual credit classes, which is a significant savings to OEHS families. Dual credits awarded by Waubonsee have the potential to transfer to several colleges and universities in and out of state. A student does not have to attend WCC in order to transfer the credit elsewhere. Visit our dual credit website for more information at www.sd308.org/domain/2834 or visit www.transferology.com to see if the credit will transfer to the college/university of choice. General questions can be directed to Brittan Fatig at [email protected].

NEW CLASS available for 2016-2017 ACT/SAT Test Prep Course

1 Semester, .5 credit — Grades 10, 11, 12 This class is recommended for college-bound juniors

and seniors planning to take the SAT and/or ACT.

Almost all undergraduate colleges and universities

require that prospective students take either the ACT or

the SAT. Taking this course will prepare students for all

of the question types found on the SAT and ACT.

Students will analyze each of the test question areas

and techniques aimed at relieving test-taking anxiety. Topics include sentence completions and

reading comprehension for the reading section, grammar and essay writing for the writing

section, scientific concepts for the science section, and basic and advanced math concepts

(including fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions) and algebraic and geometric

concepts for the math sections. ACT Test Prep is a semester long program and students may

earn .5 elective credit.

If your student is interested in adding this to his/her schedule for 2016-17 school year, please

email his/her Counselor (contact information for Counselors is on the last page of this

newsletter). If you choose to have your student take advantage of this test prep opportunity,

please be sure to let the Counselor know which class should be removed from the courses your

child selected for the 2016-17 school year.

OEHS Students to take the NEW SAT test

On Tuesday, April 12th, the New SAT will be administered at OEHS.

The Illinois State Board of Education has adopted the New SAT as the state-funded college entrance exam. Although the State Board does not yet know if appropriations will be available to fund the cost of providing a college entrance exam to students, SD308 is committed to providing a college entrance test, at no cost, to its students regardless of the State commitment. Across the nation, colleges & universities will accept the New SAT as a college entrance exam. The test consists of three sections: Reading, Writing & Language. The assessment also has an optional essay portion. The SAT does not deduct points for incorrect answers; therefore, students are encouraged to select the best answer to every question. School will be in session from 7:20 AM until 11:30 AM for ALL freshman, sophomore & junior students on this day. Juniors will take the New SAT while freshman and sophomore students take a practice SAT assessment (PSAT). Seniors will not be in attendance but should be involved in college visits or community service on this day.

Donations of time, materials, and resources are crucial to keeping Senior Celebration 2016 safe and affordable for our young adults. We meet the second Saturday of every month at 9am in the OEHS LRC with our next meeting taking place on Saturday, April 9. Please join us and help to continue this wildly popular and enjoyable tradition at OEHS!
