The One Book I Wish I’d Written —
Well, it’s a long time since I read it,but I still remember the feeling ofbeing bowled over by Vanity Fair —and brilliant Becky Sharp.Stella Duffy
I’m primarily a novelist, occasionally a short storywriter, sometimes aplaywright, a performer, atheatre director. Often I findmyself lurching from oneproject to the next, alwaysglad to be busy and engaged, but simultaneously hungryfor time and space. In myexperience it’s an absolutemyth that the writer’s life isquiet and solitary. There arefar too many events toattend, festivals to speak andread at, readers — and other
writers, other makers — tomeet, to work with. But I dobelieve that solitary time, quiet time, is also vital, andI always return to the imageof water — a deep and openpool from which, if we canjust leave it long enough, still enough, those brilliantor glorious or merely usefulideas and thoughts andsolutions will well up. In myday to day life, as I’m surein yours, these precious timesby the contemplative ‘pool’are few and far between,
but hopefully this week ofamazing events for theHavant Literary Festival willgive you just that — from talks, readings and performancesto practical workshops andan opportunity to engagewith your local community —a chance to enjoy thebubbling-up creativity ofothers and, maybe, ideally, experiment with your ownpossibilities too.
