HEYWOODSee the original listed railway goods warehouse situated opposite Heywood station and the 1898 Phoenix Brewery, which is currently undergoing renovation. Head to the Civic Centre for theatre, music and daytime events and the Magic Market for some traditional indoor market shopping. Stop at Il Vecchio for authentic yet affordable Italian cuisine before visiting Queens Park, a beautifully restored Victorian park that is easily accessible by public transport. If you have spare time, then catch a bus into Rochdale where Touchstones Art Gallery and Museum and Rochdale Town Hall are well worth a visit.

Enjoy leisurely walks in great scenery and historic countryside and discover old stone terraced cottages, once thriving cotton mills and Summerseat Viaduct. Turn left from the station to follow the historic and beautiful trail to Ramsbottom. There is also a popular garden centre and café a short walk from the station.

BURY

SUMMERSEAT

The Route

Bury is a great place to start and end your day. Get “hands on” at Bury Transport Museum building bridges, trying on period costumes and learning about people’s lives and jobs in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Bury Town centre is a short walk from the station. The interactive Fusilier Museum lets you immerse yourself in living history and come face to face with past heroes. Bury Art Gallery invites you to discover world-famous Victorian paintings, contemporary art and fascinating documents from Bury’s past in a stunning Edwardian building. Just down the road lies The Met Theatre hosting a wide array of productions. You cannot visit Bury without sampling its famous black pudding from the world famous Bury Market, known for some of the best specialist food shopping in the region.

The 12-mile route runs from Bury to Heywood and Rawtenstall taking in viaducts, tunnels and bridges. Whether you are a keen walker or a shopaholic, our full line day return tickets allow you to hop on and off the trains as often as you like to explore the railway’s surrounding countryside, towns and villages.

Rawtenstall’s historic textile past is very much evident in the town. Take some time out and explore the many attractions that are easily accessible from the station by public transport.

For a unique taste of this period head to Fitzpatrick’s, Britain’s last remaining temperance bar. Visit the Weavers’ Cottage, one of the finest examples of an 18th century loom shop, complete with working “tippler toilets”. Rossendale Museum, once a mill-owner’s home, unravels the local and social history of the area. Work your way down Bank Street for some great independent retail therapy or celebrate the region’s famous shoe industry by following the Shoe Trail from the ELR station to the Panopticon Halo sculpture and viewpoint situated 2 miles above Rawtenstall.

Lambert’s Mill Shop is home to the Rossendale Shoe Museum, bespoke furniture, café and over 20 local producers wares under one roof. You are sure to snap up some tasty treats or find that perfect present. The authentic Lancashire cotton mill, Helmshore Textile Museum, comes complete with original working machinery, a mighty waterwheel and live demonstrations.

There is a lot to do in Ramsbottom, from visiting the Heritage Centre and enjoying a walk in Nuttall Park or to the beautiful Holcombe Village, to shopping at the many shops and boutiques along small cobbled streets. Indulge in award-winning dining at Ramsons, discover small delis and bakeries or pop in to the popular Chocolate Café. And for some specialist shopping don’t miss the regular Farmers’ Markets.

Designated a Conservation Area, it is worth breaking your journey to explore this pretty little village set at the confluence of the River Ogden and the River Irwell. It lies on the route of the 33-mile Irwell Sculpture Trail, one of the largest public art schemes in the UK adding a unique artistic twist to your hiking experience.

RAMSBOTTOM IRWELL VALE

RAWTENSTALL

Ramsbottom’s skyline is dominated by the Peel Monument, built in memory of Sir Robert Peel, founder of the modern police force. Climb the 150 steps up the tower and you will be rewarded with a magnificent view over the Irwell Valley and, weather permitting, into North Wales.
