Flood 2008

One of the most important eventsoccurring during this period, was

the 2008 flood in Cedar Rapids. It

was an event that not only affectedour own community but manyothers in Iowa.

Our offices in downtown were

affected as well as many otherbuildings within the downtown

Cedar Rapids area.

The Civil Air Patrol and the 78th

 East Iowa Cadet Squadron

responded performing numerousmissions including aerial

recognizance. Cadets and Seniorsof our squadron participated in the

following missions:

Lynn County Emergency Operations Center: our squadron, in conjunction with the 51st. Senior Squadron

provided security 24/7 to the facilities of the EOC. Cadets and Seniors Dzado and Mishmash were greeted

by the President of the United States during his visit to the EOC. (We are still anxiously awaiting thosepictures! )

Our squadron also provided support to the Red Cross in the distribution of supplies at Westedale Mall.

Missions

Squadron Members Earn CPR and First Aid

Certifications

23 members of the 78th Cadet Squadron participated in a Cardio- Pulmonary

Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid training session conducted by the GrantWood Chapter of the American Red Cross in Cedar Rapids. Eight cadets from

the 78th earned their qualifications for the first time, while other attendeescompleted their required annual recertification.

“First Aid and CPR are not only important elements of a Ground TeamMember’s Emergency Services training, they are excellent life skills for

anyone, regardless of age,” said Squadron Commander Capt Brad Oglesby. “Icommend everyone who invested their time and money to take part in this

potentially life-saving training.”

ELT Search

Cedar Rapids, June 24

th

, 2008On Tuesday, 24 June, 05:30 a call was received from Col Kellogg informing the EICS to get a Ground TeamReady for an ELT search. A CAP plane was launched, but after several hours the signal could not be found

and the mission was called off. However, as is sometimes the case, the signal was picked up by satelliteagain later that evening, and the search was on! Ground team Leaders Capt Brad Oglesby, 1Lt Bill Seeley,

C/1Lt Chris Oglesby, and Ground Team Member C/SSgt Ben Lundstrum mounted up in 611 for one lastmission in the Bronco. The signal was tracked by CAP pilots to the Independence Airport, where the EICS

Ground team located the aircraft (safely tucked away in a new hanger) and silenced the ELT. ARUE!

While at the airport, the manager asked the Squadron to act the Flight Line Marshallers for their next Fly-in!

Cadets and Senior members of our squadron provided

support to the March of Dimes in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids(formerly known as Walk of America). Our squadron providedemergency services response at each check point, transportation, and communications. This event wascoordinated by Lt Dzado and was an opportunity to serve thecommunity and practice Emergency Services skills asMission Radio Operator (MRO) and mission base activitiesincluding an opportunity to rehearse Incident CommandSystem (ICS) functions such as planning, operations, andlogistics.

Previous to these events, Lt Dzado, Communications Officer, coordinated MRO training at the RedCross facilities which served as an excellent preparation for these missions.

Civil Air Patrol Values

On 2 October 2006, Cadet Chris Oglesby gave an inspiring speech on the CAP Core Values. Cadet

Oglesby, now a C/1Lt in CAP, and member of the Iowa National Guard, was a C/CMSgt back then, but hiswords still ring true and bear repeating and remembering. ARUE!

The Core Values of Civil Air Patrol

By: C/1st LT Chris Oglesby

The Civil Air Patrol is a team. It eats, plays, works, sleeps, and lives as a team. And because

everyone must work together there must be a code among all its members. There must be values at their corethat govern how each and every one of them live. These are called the Core Values.

Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence, and Respect. Each is essential to the organization and to every oneof its members.

Integrity is listed first and is the keystone of Military service. This core value is shown in CAP’s Honor

code:We will not lie, we will not cheat, and we will not steal.

We will not tolerate those among us who do!

When someone has integrity, he can be counted on by others to keep his word, to answer honestly, and to do his duty. When given a task, he can be trusted to complete it. When given equipment, he can betrusted to use it properly, and return it when finished. Each activity in CAP is an opportunity to prove our

trustworthiness and integrity. This principal must be the first and foremost part in every member’s life.Without it, CAP falls apart.

Volunteer Service: Every CAP member is a volunteer. And the organization is rooted in this value.

Volunteer service means donating your time, energy, and resources while expecting no reward in return.Other than the satisfaction that comes from helping others.

When part of a ground team, much time and equipment is required for training and practice, so thatwhen the time comes for action we will be ready, and will be in a position to possibly save someone’s life.

In CAP, we have the opportunity to assist in looking for missing people, downed aircraft, and help in timesof disaster. Being part of CAP’s missions is exciting and rewarding. It has helped me learn to work with

others, manage my time, decide what’s important, and to always think of others before myself.

Excellence. Striving to always do the best you can is an honorable goal. There is nothing more frustratingand unproductive than “half-hearted” efforts. When I was a young cadet I wanted to have the best looking

uniform in the squadron. I strived for excellence in that area, learning everything I could about uniformwear and care. I was surprised to learn that doing a good job didn’t take much more time than doing an

“OK” job. This applies to every aspect of one’s life. By striving to do the best you can, in all that you do,you can achieve more than you thought you could!

Respect, is the acknowledgement of your fellow members and those above you. CAP carries on the militarytradition of customs and courtesies, a tradition that dates back to ancient times. You may know these assaluting and saying “yes sir and no sir”. We also demonstrate the utmost respect to our nation’s flag, and our

country, through our Color Guard activities. I will always remember the Memorial Day parade in WaverlyIowa I participated in a couple of years ago. We were allowed the privilege to display the Flag in the front of

the parade, and honor those who gave their life defending our country. We were able to talk with manyVeterans afterwards and thank them for their service. We were a bit surprised when they shook our hands

and showed us respect, thanking us for our commitment and service. If one wishes to receive respect, theymust first show respect.

These four Core Values not only define how members in CAP should conduct themselves while in

uniform, but also say how we should behave in civilian life. When one embraces these core values in theirown life they will be a much wiser, trusted, more productive person, and will become a valuable asset to all

those around them.

Supporting a Great Cause

Donating to Civil Air Patrol!

The 78th Cadet Squadron sincerely thanks everyone who provides financial support to the Squadron as well

as those who volunteer their time and effort. It takes a lot of work to keep things running on a volunteerbasis. None of the annual dues that members pay to CAP National Headquarters come back to the Squadron,

and we do not assess an annual fee from our members. Likewise, our cadets are not obliged to wash cars orsell candy bars or magazines to raise funds. This is possible because of the generous support of benefactors

who donate to our Squadron so that we can focus on training for and carrying out our important mission-

related activities. If you are considering a donation, there is no finer organization than Civil Air Patrol. If you have anyquestions about making a donation, please contact Maj. Bob Benson at [email protected]. It is

possible to donate to Civil Air Patrol via the United Way, and some employers will even offer a matchingcontribution!
