eAssist Features

eAssist® OverviewIf the vehicle has eAssist, there areseveral additional features thatcontribute to increased efficiency.

Vehicles with eAssist have anautomatic engine start/stop feature. This feature saves fuel by shuttingthe engine off when the vehicle isstopped. When the engine shuts offautomatically, all the accessorieswill continue to operate normally. Invery hot or cold conditions, theengine may not shut off. SeeStarting the Engine 0 19.

There are two air conditioningsettings available. The comfortsetting maximizes cabin comfort. The eco setting maximizesefficiency allowing more frequent, and longer engine stops than thecomfort setting. See Dual AutomaticClimate Control System 0 14.

This vehicle has a Hill Start Assist(HSA) feature, which may be usefulwhen the vehicle is stopped on agrade. See the Owner Manual.

Vehicles with eAssist include anAUTO STOP indicator on thetachometer. See InstrumentCluster 0 9.

The eAssist system uses a highvoltage battery, which is cooled withair drawn from the vehicle interior.

The cold air intake for the battery ison the sides of the center console. The exhaust for warm air is at therear of the console. Do not coverthe intake. See Battery - NorthAmerica 0 32.

High Voltage SafetyInformationVehicles with eAssist have astandard 12-volt battery and a highvoltage battery. Only a trainedservice technician with the properknowledge and tools should inspect, test, or replace the high voltagebattery. See your dealer if the highvoltage battery needs service.

In emergency situations, firstresponders can cut the two clearlylabeled cut points in the engine

Automatic Engine Start/Stop FeatureVehicles with eAssist have anautomatic engine stop/start feature. After the engine is started and hasreached operating temperature, theauto stop feature may cause theengine to turn off when the brakepedal is applied and the vehiclecomes to a complete stop. Whenthe brake pedal is released, or theaccelerator pedal is applied, theengine will restart. The engine willcontinue to run until the nextauto stop.

AUTO STOP on the tachometersignifies that the engine is in autostop mode. See Tachometer 0 10for more information. A chime willsound when the driver door isopened while in auto stop mode.Remember to shift to P (Park) andturn the ignition to LOCK/OFFbefore exiting the vehicle.

See Starting the Engine 0 19.

Regenerative BrakingRegenerative braking takes some ofthe energy from the moving vehicleand turns it into electrical energy. This energy is then stored in thevehicle's high voltage batterysystem, contributing to increasedfuel efficiency.

The system works whenever theaccelerator pedal is released, andincreases the energy captured asmore brake pedal is applied.

BatteryThis vehicle has a standard 12-voltbattery. Refer to the replacementnumber on the original battery labelwhen a new standard 12-volt batteryis needed.

Vehicles with eAssist also have ahigh voltage battery. Only a trainedservice technician with the properknowledge and tools should inspect, test, or replace the high voltagebattery. See your dealer if the highvoltage battery needs service. SeeBattery - North America 0 32.

ServiceNever try to do your own service oneAssist components. You can beinjured and the vehicle can bedamaged if you try to do your ownservice work. Service and repair ofthese high voltage componentsshould only be performed by atrained service technician with theproper knowledge and tools. Weight of the Trailer

How heavy can a trailer safely be?

It depends on how the rig is used.Speed, altitude, road grades, outside temperature, and how muchthe vehicle is used to pull a trailerare all important. It can depend onany special equipment on thevehicle, and the amount of tongueweight the vehicle can carry. See“Weight of the Trailer Tongue” laterin this section for more information.

Trailer weight rating (TWR) forpickup models is calculatedassuming the tow vehicle has thedriver, a front seat passenger, andall required trailering equipment.Weight of additional optionalequipment, passengers, and cargoin the tow vehicle must besubtracted from the trailer weightrating.

Ask your dealer for traileringinformation or advice.

For kingpin weight and trailertongue weight information, see“Weight of the Trailer Tongue” laterin this section.

Use the following chart to determinehow much the vehicle can weigh, based upon the vehicle model andoptions.

Weights listed apply forconventional trailers and fifth-wheeltrailers unless otherwise noted.

(a) The Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) is the total allowable weight of the completely loaded vehicleand trailer including any passengers, cargo, equipment, and conversions. The GCWR for the vehicle should not beexceeded.(b) This model is neither designed nor intended to tow fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers.

Ask your dealer for traileringinformation or advice.

Weight of the Trailer Tongue

The tongue load (1) of any trailer isvery important because it is alsopart of the vehicle weight. TheGross Vehicle Weight (GVW)includes the curb weight of the

vehicle, any cargo carried in it, andthe people who will be riding in thevehicle as well as trailer tongueweight. Vehicle options, equipment, passengers and cargo in the vehiclereduce the amount of tongue weight

the vehicle can carry, which will alsoreduce the trailer weight the vehiclecan tow.

Trailer tongue weight (1) should be10–15% and fifth-wheel orgooseneck kingpin weight should be15–25% of the loaded trailerweight (2) up to the maximums forvehicle series and hitch type.

Vehicle Series Hitch TypeMaximum Tongue

Weight

1500 Weight-Carrying 363 kg (800 lb)

1500 Weight-Distributing 544 kg (1,200 lb)

Do not exceed the maximumallowable tongue weight for thevehicle. Choose the shortest hitchextension that will position the hitchball closest to the vehicle. This willhelp reduce the effect of trailertongue weight on the rear axle.

Trailer rating may be limited by thevehicle's ability to carry tongueweight. Tongue or kingpin weightcannot cause the vehicle to exceedthe GVWR (Gross Vehicle WeightRating) or the RGAWR (Rear GrossAxle Weight Rating). See “TotalWeight on the Vehicle's Tires” laterin this section.

After loading the trailer, weigh thetrailer and then the tongue, separately, to see if the weights areproper. If they are not, adjustmentsmight be made by moving someitems around in the trailer.

If a cargo carrier is used in thetrailer hitch receiver, choose acarrier that positions the load asclose to the vehicle as possible.Make sure the total weight, including the carrier, is no more thanhalf of the maximum allowabletongue weight for the vehicle or227 kg (500 lb), whichever is less.

Total Weight on Your Vehicle'sTires

Be sure the vehicle's tires areinflated to the inflation pressuresfound on the Certification/Tire labelon the center pillar or see “VehicleLoad Limits” in the Owner Manual.Make sure not to exceed the GVWRlimit for the vehicle, or the RGAWR,with the tow vehicle and trailer fullyloaded for the trip including theweight of the trailer tongue. If usinga weight-distributing hitch, make

Weight of the TraileringCombination

It is important that the combinationof the tow vehicle and trailer doesnot exceed any of its weightratings — GCWR, GVWR, RGAWR,Trailer Weight Rating, or TongueWeight. The only way to be sure it isnot exceeding any of these ratingsis to weigh the tow vehicle andtrailer combination, fully loaded forthe trip, getting individual weightsfor each of these items.

overheat warning. The enginecould catch fire and you orothers could be burned. Use a50/50 mixture of clean, drinkablewater and DEX-COOL coolant.

Use a 50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and DEX-COOLcoolant. If using this mixture, nothing else needs to be added. This mixture:

. Gives freezing protection downto −37 °C (−34 °F), outsidetemperature.

. Gives boiling protection up to129 °C (265 °F), enginetemperature.

. Protects against rust andcorrosion.

. Will not damage aluminum parts.

. Helps keep the proper enginetemperature.

Never dispose of engine coolant byputting it in the trash, or by pouringit on the ground, or into sewers,

streams, or bodies of water. Havethe coolant changed by anauthorized service center, familiarwith legal requirements regardingused coolant disposal. This will helpprotect the environment and yourhealth.

Checking Coolant

The coolant surge tank is located inthe engine compartment in front ofthe radiator. See EngineCompartment Overview 0 27.

The vehicle must be on a levelsurface when checking the coolantlevel.

Check to see if coolant is visible inthe coolant surge tank. If the coolantinside the coolant surge tank isboiling, wait until it cools down. Thecoolant level should be at or abovethe indicated mark. If it is not, theremay be a leak in the coolingsystem.

If coolant is visible but the coolantlevel is not at or above the indicatedmark, see “How to Add Coolant tothe Coolant Surge Tank,” following.

If no coolant is visible in the surgetank, add coolant.

1. Remove the coolant surge tankpressure cap when the coolingsystem, including the coolantsurge tank pressure cap andupper radiator hose, is nolonger hot.

Turn the pressure cap slowlycounterclockwise about one fullturn. If a hiss is heard, wait forthat to stop. A hiss meansthere is still some pressure left.

2. Keep turning the pressure capslowly, and remove it.

3. Fill the coolant surge tank withthe proper mixture to theindicated mark.

4. With the coolant surge tankpressure cap off, start theengine and let it run until theengine coolant temperaturegauge indicates approximately90 °C (195 °F).

By this time, the coolant levelinside the coolant surge tankmay be lower. If the level islower, add more of the proper

Caution

If the pressure cap is not tightlyinstalled, coolant loss andpossible engine damage mayoccur. Be sure the cap is properlyand tightly secured.

Engine OverheatingThere is an engine coolanttemperature gauge on theinstrument cluster. See the ownermanual.

If Steam Is Coming from theEngine Compartment

{ Warning

Steam from an overheated enginecan burn you badly, even if youjust open the hood. Stay awayfrom the engine if you see or hearsteam coming from it. Just turn itoff and get everyone away fromthe vehicle until it cools down.Wait until there is no sign ofsteam or coolant before you openthe hood.

If you keep driving when theengine is overheated, the liquidsin it can catch fire. You or otherscould be badly burned. Stop theengine if it overheats, and get outof the vehicle until the engineis cool.

Caution

Running the engine withoutcoolant may cause damage or afire. Vehicle damage would not becovered by the vehicle warranty.

If No Steam Is Coming fromthe Engine Compartment

A Driver Information Center (DIC)message, along with a low coolantcondition, can indicate a seriousproblem.

If there is an engine overheatwarning and the vehicle does nothave a low coolant condition, andno steam is heard or seen, theproblem may not be too serious.Sometimes the engine can get alittle too hot when the vehicle:

. Climbs a long hill on a hot day.

. Stops after high-speed driving.

. Idles for long periods in traffic.

. Tows a trailer. See “Driving onGrades” under “DrivingCharacteristics and Towing Tips”in the owner manual.

If the DIC message comes on withno sign of steam, try this for aminute or so:

1. In heavy traffic, let the engineidle in N (Neutral) whilestopped. If it is safe to do so,pull off the road, shift toP (Park) or N (Neutral), and letthe engine idle.

2. Turn on the heater to full hot atthe highest fan speed andopen the window as necessary.

If the vehicle no longer has theoverheat warning, the vehicle canbe driven. Just to be safe, driveslower for about 10 minutes. If thewarning does not come back on,drive normally and have the coolingsystem checked for proper fill andfunction.

If the warning continues, pull over, stop, and park the vehicleright away.

If there is still no sign of steam andthe vehicle is equipped with anengine driven cooling fan, pushdown the accelerator until theengine speed is about twice as fastas normal idle speed for at leastfive minutes while the vehicle isparked. If the warning is still there, turn off the engine and get everyoneout of the vehicle until it cools down.

The decision may be made not to liftthe hood, but to get service helpright away.

{ Warning

Batteries can hurt you. They canbe dangerous because:

. They contain acid that canburn you.

. They contain gas that canexplode or ignite.

. They contain enoughelectricity to burn you.

If you do not follow these stepsexactly, some or all of thesethings can hurt you.

Caution

Ignoring these steps could resultin costly damage to the vehiclethat would not be covered by thevehicle warranty. Trying to startthe vehicle by pushing or pulling itwill not work, and it could damagethe vehicle.

1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-volt batterywith a negative ground system.

Caution

If the other vehicle does not havea 12-volt system with a negativeground, both vehicles can bedamaged. Only use a vehicle thathas a 12-volt system with anegative ground for jump starting.

2. If you have a vehicle with twobatteries, you should knowbefore you begin that, especially in cold weather, youmay not be able to get enoughpower from a single battery inanother vehicle to start yourengine. If your vehicle hasmore than one battery, usingthe battery that is closer to thestarter will reduce electricalresistance. This is located onthe passenger side, in the rearof the engine compartment.

3. Get the vehicles close enoughso the jumper cables canreach, but be sure the vehiclesare not touching each other. If they are, it could cause anunwanted ground connection. You would not be able to startyour vehicle, and the badgrounding could damage theelectrical systems.

To avoid the possibility of thevehicles rolling, set the parkingbrake firmly on both vehiclesinvolved in the jump startprocedure. Put the automatictransmission in P (Park) or amanual transmission in Neutralbefore setting the parkingbrake. If you have afour-wheel-drive vehicle, besure the transfer case is in adrive gear, not in N (Neutral).
