Trail ReportFROM: RANDY WHITEN

Projects for December 10, 20111. The Project on Big Kennesaw at the rock crib will

continue, we hope to complete that project. Jim Moylan will be in charge of that crew. Fill dirt will be staged at the worksite before the work date.

2. A new project will be the Hardage Mill Trail Switchback. There has been considerable wash and the switchback is in bad need of repair. Crew Leader will be Jay Dement.

3. The fencing at the Visitor Center at the parking lot needs restacking, it is very unstable. Donald Olds will have this project.

4. Bamboo is still an ongoing project. Doug will be the crew leader for that project.

5. The trail on Little Kennesaw just before the new fence is in terrible shape. We need to prevent someone from getting injured from falling. Also since they are at the fence they can bring down the balance of the fencing staged by Scott. This project will include rock removal, steps, and some rock cribs.

A work day was planned December 3 to reroute the trail off John Ward Road.

• Knob Farm trail reroute. About 14 members from the HOA plus crewleaders completed about 80% of the reroute. The balance was completed on our next work day.

Winter Trail Days Projects, January 7, 2012

All the work this day will be on Big Kennesaw and Little Kennesaw.

Teams will be taken up to the Little Kennesaw Trail at the Mountain Road.

Tools will be staged at that site.

One team will have their tools staged at the Maintenance Building.

1. Team one, finishing the rock crib on the old mountain trail. Tools were staged at the maintenance building and the team hiked the trail to the work site. Material was staged in advance.

2. Multiple Teams - Trail work began on little Kennesaw below the new fence. The work site was marked with red flags. Tool s were staged at the trail head. • Teams were bused up the mountain. Crew

leaders met their teams at the theater and each were responsible for their safety

lecture. Water was located with the tools. The present plan was ten per team. As the teams are formed they will be bused up the mountain.

• The work site was from the new fence to the switchback. Rocks were moved, some rock cribs and a tree cut out of the trail. Work continued on our regular work day the following week.

• This trail needs a lot of work.

Regular Work Day, January 14, 2012 1. Bamboo Removal2. Continuation of Trail work on Little Kennesaw started

last week.

One crew drove over to the Bamboo project.

The other crews were bussed up the mountain to the Little Kennesaw Trail Head. At the conclusion, they walked down to the trail head at Burnt Hickory and Old Mountain Rd.

• Tools and water were staged on the mountain/work site.

Scout Project. (Troop 1, Sam Hogan)There has been 2 weekends of work on the new fence across the street of the Visitor Center. About as least three more remain. Also additional cleaning has been done on the picnic area. (Jan 7th and Jan 14th)

Future Scout Projects1. Steps at the horse park2. Clearing the field at Cheatham Hill and Powder

Springs3. New Fence on Burnt Hickory, this is at least two

projects.

Other Future Projects 1. Tree planting in February.2. Tree planting in March3. Horse park cleaning and clearing.

Joint effort of HOA, NPS and the Trail Club

Richard Kozicki, a resident of The Enclave at Cheatham Hill Park, reported a trail safety issue to Anne Strand of the Trail Club. Richard had helped park visitors that had been injured by falling on the steep, rock bald part of the trail near his home.

Jay Haney of the Trail Club called Richard and got additional information. Jim Moylan, a Trail Club Crew leader, and Jay visited the site. To correct the safety issue, a trail re-route would be necessary.

Anytrailre-routingintheparkhastobeapprovedbytheNPScomplianceofficer,RangerWillieR.Johnson.Jimarrangedfor Willie to visit the site and he approved the Trail Club plan for the re-route.

Jim, with Jay’s help, coordinated with the HOA members near the site and set a work day of December 3, 2011. Nine volunteers attended the work day, six from the Enclave and three from Cheatham Hill Park. The Trail Club provided crew leaders to manage the project and Trail Ambassadors to register the volunteers and provide site safety. The Trail Club alsoprovidedoperatorsforbothDitchWitchesandacertifiedchainsawoperator.

Work included cutting the new 100-foot long switch back trail with the Ditch Witches, constructing a rock retaining wall, cutting dead trees and smoothing the trail surface. Approximately 80% of the project was completed on December 3rd. The trail re-route is now open for use.

This is an outstanding example of public-park-trail club cooperation to solve an issue of mutual concern.

“Being Green”We recently had an REI sponsored “Winter Trail Day.” There was a very good turnout of over 60 volunteers. Most of this group was new to Kennesaw Mountain and working with our crew leaders. We started off the event by apologizing for the not-so- wintery weather; which in fact was pretty warm and made me think about spring and things soon turning green.

Of course, no one actually complained that the weather was pleasant. And, it made no difference that most of the volunteers were “Green” - as in being unfamiliar with the work they were about to do. As with many volunteer groups, there is always a core of dependable volunteers. That’s important because they’re able to aid the new- comers. However, thesurprisingthingwefindwiththosewho come “Green” is that they’re able to quickly pick up the skills needed to complete a project. It is almost like “Being Green” is a good thing, eager to grow and learn and do something new. I believe that we’ll see more than several of the volunteers who came for the REI event return.

We are grateful for REI’s support and recommendation of people to become active in our club. We welcome all volunteers and especially look forward to seeing our new crew leaders, who are undergoing training at this time, move forward from being green to being seasoned leaders and trail workers.

Things will start turning green very soon. Come out and join us and enjoy the season.

Doug TasseOutreach Director & Crew Leader

“Thanks Going Forward”So much was accomplished by volunteers at Kennesaw Mountain in 2011 and now we look forward to 2012.

There’s a commercial running currently on TV which has a couple of guinea pigs rowing a boat to generate power and one chubby guinea pig timing their stokes by calling out, “Row”. There is a man watching them row who explains that it took 8 months to teach the guinea pig the word “Row” - which, he says, is ‘such a simple word’. I don’t recall what the commercial is advertising, but I really appreciate the idea and how it pertains to the Trail Club.

Tail Club members work together to teach, learn, share and use various skills needed to complete the different projects we undertake around the park. And, as the man in the commercial might say: “’Row’ it’s ‘such a simple word”.. But it makes important things happen.

Working together and leaning and doing is important. It’s just that a little word sometimes takes awhile to hear or learn. I believe the word “Thanks” is that one word we should use and hear during the New Year.

Thanks for the many projects that we worked on last year. The Trail Club’s volunteer efforts resulted in some large and very visible projects being completed. Among them were numerous trail improvements; restoring the drainage and the grounds at the Illinois Monument; clearing and beginning new landscaping at the Visitor Center and amphitheater areas; fencing additions and improvements; invasive plant removals; and creating a new switchback trail to make a steep section of the trail safer for hikers and horses. Everyone who worked on any of these projects should have heard “Thanks” while work was in progress and at the end of the session. And we want to thank you all again.

I’ve also noticed that many visitors say “Thanks” as they pass by our project sites.

So, feel assured that many are thankful that Kennesaw Mountain is cared for by volunteers who show their thanks bybeingtheretohelppreservethebattlefieldandthehikingtrails there.

I hear frequently that the Park staff thanks us. I believe that we are the ones to say “Thanks” for having this National BattlefieldParkavailabletous.

“Thanks”, such a simple word to start off the New Year. Also a couple of words that are important; “Thank You”, the simple additional word is “You.” You make the difference , you are the one we need. Won’t you please come and join us this year?

“Thanks!”

The Battle of Fort DonelsonFebruary 11-16,1862

After capturing Fort Henry on February 6, 1862, Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant advanced cross-country to invest Fort Donelson. On February 16, 1862, after the failure of their all-out attack aimed at breaking through Grant’s investment lines, the fort’s 12,000-man garrison surrendered unconditionally. This was a major victory for Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and a catastrophe for the South. It ensured that Kentucky would stay in the Union and opened up Tennessee for a Northern advance along the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. Grant received a promotion to major general for his victory and attained stature in the Western Theater, earning the nom de guerre “Unconditional Surrender.”

Grade DipsWhen possible, grade dips should be wide and have shallow angled approaches. Ideally a hiker should hardly notice them.

While hiking a few weeks ago I came across a grade dip we created several years back. It was still doing its job! When we built it, we worked hard to compact the trail tread so hikers would not erode it.
