Unit 4 - Implement A Solution

In this activity, you will:

-Implement a solution for the Structure Design for Earthquakes project.-Cut members, assemble them, and finish the prototype.-Always keep safety in mind while building the prototype.

Page 4: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Lab SafetyAlways keep safety in mind. Safety if staying out of harm’s way. Follow all of our specific lab safety rules. Always read and follow lab safety rules. Ask questions when you do not understand what to do.

Safety First!

Page 5: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

During the LabWhile you are working in the lab, use common sense. Make sure to: - Follow all of the instructions - Pay close attention to what you are doing at all times - Keep your work areas clean and tidy at all times

Always read the instructions before beginning the activity.Carefully follow all of the written and oral directions. If you are in doubt, ask

the teacher for instructions.

Wear eye protection when needed.

Stay focused on your task, especially when you are using tools or machines.

And be aware of the people around you.

If any injuries do happen in the lab, tell your teacher immediately.

Working with Tools and MachinesYou may have the chance to work with tools and equipment that need to be handled safely.

Wear eye protection when working with sharp tools or machines with moving parts.

When using machines and tools, make sure that you are not wearing any loose clothing or jewelry, and that your hair is tied back securely.

Keep hands and fingers away from all moving parts.

Handle sharp instruments with extreme care. Always point them away from your body and cut material away from your body.

Review a machine’s safety rules before you turn it on. Remember to ask your teacher for help if you are not sure.

Safety First!

Cleaning UpAfter your work is done, turn off any machines that you are using. Clean up your work area and return all tools to the proper place.

Remember the number one safety rule: Follow the rules and ask questions if you are not sure what to do.

Clean Up!

Building the Prototype

In this activity, you will build your prototype courthouse structure. Your structure may be delicate, so work carefully.

No matter what the design, building a prototype structure includes several straight-forward steps. The steps are

-Prepare to Build

-Build the Elevations

-Assemble the Elevations

Prepare to Build

Building the Prototype

To prepare to build:

-Get your homasote board and tape your final design sketch (3-3) to it.

-Place a sheet of wax paper at least 18 inches long over the design sketch sheet and tape down.

Prepare to Build

Page 13: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Build the ElevationsBuild each elevation of the building in the same way. Always start with the long exterior columns. And then add the interior columns and beams.

Page 14: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-Place the edge of a wood stick next to the edge of a member on the design sketch.

Build the Elevations

Page 15: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:--To join a beam and a column, create an angled cut. Mark the angle of the cut on the wood stick. Cut the wood stick at the mark.

Build the Elevations

Page 16: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-Place the wood stick directly on top of the member on the design sketch.

-Make sure the angled end of the wood stick lines up with end of the member.

Build the Elevations

Page 17: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-At the other end of the member, mark the angle of the cut on the wood stick

-Cut the wood stick at the mark

Build the Elevations

Page 18: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-Place the wood stick on top of the member on the design sketch. Check that the length is correct. -Tape the wood stick to the wax paper. Do not tape at the joints or connections.

Build the Elevations

Page 19: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-Repeat the process of marking, cutting, and taping for all of the members on the elevation.

Build the Elevations

Page 20: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-When all of the members are taped to the wax paper, check that they line up straight on the members on the design sketch. And make sure all of the joints will have a snug fit.

Build the Elevations

Page 21: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-Glue the members together. If you are using pins, pin the members to make the joints tighter.

Build the Elevations

Page 22: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

To build the elevations:-Set the elevation in a safe place to dry completely.-After the elevation is dry, remove the tape and pins. Carefully lift the elevation off the wax paper.-Repeat this process for each elevation.

Build the Elevations

Page 23: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

ASSEMBLY

Page 24: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-Place one elevation flat on the wax paper.

Page 25: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-Put several small beads of glue along one long exterior column. Carefully line up a second elevation on top of the glue. Pin the elevations together.

Page 26: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-Glue and pin the third elevation to the framework.

Page 27: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-Glue and pin the fourth elevation to the framework.-To finish the framework, glue and pin the fourth elevation to the first elevation.

Page 28: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-Use tape to support the structure while the glue dries.-Check that the structure has a rectangular shape and is not leaning to one side.

Page 29: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-Place glue along the OUTSIDE of the base. **Remember ours should fit on the inside of the tower**

Page 30: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-Attach the framework to the foundation plate. (This is the plate that attaches to the earthquake simulator.)

Pin or tape the framework to the foundation plate.

Page 31: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:-If needed, add more glue to the foundation plate.

Page 32: EARTHQUAKE TOWERS

Assemble the ElevationsTo assemble the elevations:

-After the glue dries, carefully remove the tape and pins.

Congratulations! You have “Implemented a Solution” and created your very own prototype courthouse structure. You

may now move onto Unit 5 Power Point – “Test and Evaluate”.
