The election coming up in November 2012 is probably one of the most importantelections that you will ever have the chance to vote in. I have never seen theRepublicans being so out-spoken and anti-union and anti-working person. If they get in,we will be put back to the early 1930’s. Can you believe Mitt Romney claiming that hesaved the Big Three and Michigan, when he said let them go down the tubes?

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT SUICIDE
MYTH: People who talk about suicide don’t complete suicide.
FACT: Many people who die by suicide have givendefinite warnings to family and friends of theirintentions. Always take any comment aboutsuicide seriously.
MYTH: Suicide happens without warning.FACT: Most suicidal people give clues and signs regarding
their suicidal intentions.
MYTH: Suicidal people are fully intent on dying.FACT: Most suicidal people are undecided about living or
dying, which is called “suicidal ambivalence.”A part of them wants to live: however, death seems like the only way out of their pain and suffering. They may allow themselves to “gamble with death”leaving it up to others to save them.
MYTH: Men are more likely to be suicidal.FACT: Men are four times more likely to kill themselves
than women. Women attempt suicide threetimes more often than men do.
MYTH: Suicide occurs in great numbers around holidays in November and December.
FACT: Highest rates of suicide are in May or June, while lowest rates are in December.
MYTH: Asking a depressed person about suicide will push him/her to complete suicide.
FACT: Studies have shown that patients with depression have these ideas and talking about them doesnot increase the risk of them taking their own lives.
MYTH: Improvement following a suicide attempt or crisis means that the risk is over.
FACT: Most suicides occur within days or weeks of “improvement” when the individual has the energyand motivation to actually follow through with his/her suicidal thoughts. The highest suicide rates are immediately after hospitalization for a suicide attempt.
MYTH: Once a person attempts suicide, the pain and shamethey experience will keep them from tryingagain.
FACT: The most common psychiatric illness that ends in suicide is major depression, a recurring illness.Every time a patient gets depressed, the risk ofsuicide returns.
MYTH: Sometimes a bad event can push a person to complete suicide.
FACT: Suicide results from having a serious psychiatric disorder. A single event may just be” thelast straw.”

Greetings Brothers and Sisters,As I’m sure most of you have
noticed, whenever I speak of workload Ialways qualify my statements that things canchange. The reason I do that is experiencehas taught me that we operate in a very fluidand dynamic environment where things oftenchange in a heartbeat due to factors that arewell beyond the control of PPO; factors suchas realignments of the product portfolios, theoverall economy, new vehicle regulations,and changing demands of the marketplace;
having said that, there has been some retiming of theworkload for the remainder of this year. The latter part of2012 was scheduled to be very busy. However, that has nowchanged. Just as we have felt the pinch of budget cuts inPPO, our customers (the platforms) have also been squeezed.Consequently some of work has been retimed to start laterthan originally scheduled. At this time, all the work is stillthere, just delayed. As everyone here knows, new product isthe life blood of this business and our competition is notstanding still. I hope that the mistakes of the Old GM are notgoing to be repeated.
This change in workload will impact different parts ofPPO in different ways. MTS should see very little changefrom what had been projected given the availability of globalwork for the type of work that occurs there. CCO however isa different story. Needless to say, these delays will have aprofound impact on the manpower needs of that area. As Iwrite this, we have been engaged in some intense discussionswith the management there regarding manpower. Myexpectation is that we use this slow period to do training (asGMS doctrine and common sense says we should). Not onlywould training mitigate reductions, it would also improve thecompetitiveness of the shop when the workload does increaseagain. Given the new technologies that are entering the shop,we are going to need to get prepared if we are to continue tobe successful at CCO. If this does not occur due to short-term budget concerns then there is a saying from where Icome from that pretty well sums it up: we’re eating yourseed corn.
As it stands now, reductions have already begun atCCO. Small numbers of our Temp SSO’s and 3rd Party TempJourneypersons (specifically Retirees) are being let go eachweek. Right now it looks like all the Retirees will be reducedby June along with the majority of our Temp SSO’s.Considering the amount of time and money that it costs tohire and train people I believe that a portion of the budgetsavings that these reductions claim are short term and false. When the work load picks up again (which it will) we willprobably again need to bring on people and additional costswill be incurred as we will surely not be getting back all thesame people that were reduced. Given the wealth of talentthat our Long-Term GM Temp Journeypersons and non-retiree 3rd party journeypersons have, and the improving jobopportunities outside of GM, there is a mutual desire by theparties to try to keep these folks on. It should also be pointedout that the majority of our Temps are on the off shift;management has already mentioned their desire to rebalancethe shifts. Also, the workload in the GSB1 BIW shop is
diminishing as was forecast. This is expected to betemporary, but management will continue to move manpowerto CCO where the work is.
At MTS, new equipment procurement and installationis on schedule. The new equipment and our Apprentices are atestament to the turn around that has taken place at MTS. Nodetermination has yet been made as to what the usage for thearea vacated by the Overflow group will be. Even though Ido not directly represent any one in Facilities, I have recentlyhad an education about Document 159 of the NationalAgreement. There had been some concerns regarding thecontractor moving some of the Overflow Group’s things. After numerous conversations with the right people I learnedthat what was going on in that area was part of a much largerproject that had gone through the 183 process and had beensubcontracted. It was made clear to me that 183 apply only tofacilities trades and not to Materials. Therefore, if movingmaterials is part of the major project that has beensubcontracted then the contractor is responsible to take careof it. I think there may have been some confusion about thisissue because of some of the things that had happened in thepast around the site under superseded agreements.
Staffing issues are rampant at MTS. Managementthere has been very forward with their intention of exercisingtheir right to job assign in order to ensure that the work thathas been taken on gets done. What occurred on 2nd shiftwith the staffing of the 2000 ton press really put the issue in aspotlight for management. Since that occurred, managementhas done a thorough review of what the staffing needs will bein various areas of the shop and plan on reallocatingmanpower as required. As long as none of our agreementsare being violated they can do this. The root of all theseproblems in the MTS shop is, in my opinion, chronicunderstaffing.
Currently, both MTS and CCO are scheduled to workduring the shutdown. MTS is planning on only working oneshift of approximately 50 to 60 people during that period.CCO is planning on running full on both shifts at that time.Needless to say, this has caused a great many vacationscheduling issues there. I would like to take this opportunityto remind the membership that working during the shutdownis determined by seniority not the 71 sheet.
Finally, I’d like to touch on what the vacation policiesare for the Shutdown for our newly hired members. When itcomes to the Shutdown, a member who has 40 hours ofvacation entitlement has the option of using those hours tocover the Vacation Shutdown or to be placed on an unpaidleave of absence for that period. Members who have accrued80 hours of vacation entitlement must apply 40 hours to thefirst week (less any paid holidays) of the Shutdown; they thenhave the option of applying their remaining vacationentitlement or being placed on unpaid leave of absence on thesecond week of the Shutdown. Anyone who has 100 hours ofvacation entitlement must apply 40 hours to the first week(less any holidays) and 20 hours to the first two and one halfdays of the second week. They may choose to use remainingvacation entitlement or be placed on unpaid leave for thebalance of the second week. I hope this information helps.

This year’s National CAPConference focused on the re-election ofPresident Obama, second term. Theconference was held in Washington D.C.,February 26-March 1, 2012 at the MarriottHotel Conference Center. The UAWalong with other labor unions, supportPresident Obama. In the year 2008, thesupport was 60%. For this year’selection, we need 75% or better fromorganized labor for a second term. We
need you and your family to support with other groupsand labor to re-elect this President for a second term.We need to remind people how this President worked tosave American jobs. We are 99%, the worker, workingfor a pay check. Start talking to your friends and family.Go to UAW “Give Me Five” for more information.Volunteer your time; support your V-CAP drive at yourunion Local. The monies support candidates thatsupport labor issues. Giving $5.00 or more a month willhelp stop the Right to Work Law in the State ofMichigan with union jobs at stake. We only have about25% active members paying about $10.00 a monthsupporting the UAW V-CAP check-off from theirpaychecks. This will help save health care and goodpaying jobs. 85% of retired UAW workers are registeredvoters. We all need to work on the other 15% to registerthem to vote, 30 days before the election or before.

Aiming For The StarsHonors student learns and interns at NASA,
sees final shuttle launch
Rose Stokes is truly aiming for the stars in herlife. The senior general management major fromSterling Heights started a cooperative educationassignment with NASA in spring 2011 and continuedinto the summer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center inHouston.
During her time spent with NASA she workedfor some amazing places like the Standard GeneralLedger area of their Financial Management Division and also their Institutional Procurement area. Theinterns would have daily tasks that their mentor assignedto them and taught them how to do. She would handleprojects that dealt with thousands of dollars each day.
“I got to plan and attend lectures with variousastronauts, the head of the Astronaut Selection Office,Space Shuttle and International Space Station (ISS)Flight Directors, historic men like Gene Kranz and SyLiebergot from Apollo 13” said Stokes.
Stokes felt very lucky to be able to help out withsomething she loved and she was good at it too. Afterher spring semester, she became the Project Leaderassuming responsibility of a director from each center.
Stokes was pretty much in charge of the entireCAC organization at each Center. CAC, which standsfor Co-opportunity Agency Connections, does agency-wide video teleconferences with speakers from differentCenters each semester. And not only did she do amazingthings with NASA while she was there she also was ableto meet some pretty awesome people.
“We have social events like dinners, bowling, movie nights and more all the time” Stokes gushed asshe talked about her experience with the other interns. They even had a beach party where they stayed in abeach house for a weekend. But one of her mostamazing moments was when she saw the launch ofSpace Shuttle Discovery in February.
She was standing as close as possible in KennedySpace Center’s press site. The shuttle only had a tenminute window in which it could take off, so everyonewas worried it was not going to launch but when it did itwas a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“Everyone was quiet afterwards because there’sreally no words to communicate how amazing it was,”Stokes said.
She also got to see two other orbiters that werebeing prepared for their missions into space. Stokes isnot done though as she is returning for anotherinternship this summer.
