Early War Miniatures World War 2 A range of miniatures and models covering the early Second World War era. For war gamers and collectors alike, these ranges of miniatures depict the major European military forces that saw action in early WW2 primarily from 1939 till 1941 and beyond. In some cases the equipments deployed and depicted here in miniature, saw service from as early as 1916 and were still on active service in 1939 and 1940 with some combatant nations. The whole era of the 1930’s up till September 1939 saw a period of change and the deployment of many different military doctrines and strategy’s. For those depicting military forces during the 1930’s, you will find many miniatures here covering military forces used during these times as well. Indeed, much of the allied equipment captured by the Germans after the fall of France in June 1940, saw active service with the Axis forces on many fronts and served on till wars end in 1945. The main theme and focus of this range of miniatures is the period from 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War and on till essentially the end of 1941 and early 1942. This core focus period is designed to capture the spirit those early war years in miniatures. Many unusual models, figures and equipment types are covered allowing you to add to existing collections or start new ones using these miniatures for the early war period. Items that you might find hard or impossible to find elsewhere can be found here. Our Ranges cover French, British, Belgian, Dutch, Norwegian and Polish Allied forces as well as Italian, German and Japanese Axis military miniatures of the early war years. Some of military equipment in service with these and other nations was imported and exported. Some had local modifications made. The catalogue makes an effort to cross reference this usage in the lists under each country. Where items of military equipment were in use by multiple countries, you will find these listed and referenced. and units are in the ranges. Toms Tins - Tom Lobley, the designer of this range of miniatures will continue to be active concentrating on making more designs to add the existing ranges. This extensive range of French Army miniatures recreates the forces and equipments of the French Armies that were in use from as early as 1916 in some cases, and that saw service primarily in the 1939/40 campaigns in Europe. Some of these items continued in service with other French forces on into 1943 and beyond. Much of the equipment that was captured from the French helped power the later Axis “Blitzkriegs” against Russia in Operation Barbarossa by both the Germans and other Axis forces. Much of it was used in many of the Axis forces in later campaigns right up to the end of the war in 1945. The French Infantry listed here with their associated infantry support weaponry types, covers the standard French infantry units of both the first, second and third line battalions, the Chasseurs A Pied, Colonial troops in Adrian Helmets and the Polish divisions engaged in 1940 using French equipment. The Chasseurs Alpins who fought in Norway and France are also well represented here. The “infantry sets” in all ranges when purchased represent a small saving from buying figures separately. Alternatively, customers can select figures individually to make up units in poses of their own choosing.

The French Cavalry, like that of the German and other European armies in this era, was a useful and highly mobile force still very much in use in these early war years of WW2. Capable, well trained, able to scout and provide reconnaissance on the whereabouts of enemy units on the battlefield. When dismounted (Figures covered in the ranges) they fought well and had a number of mobile modern battlefield support weapons. Listed here are both mounted and dismounted figures with associated cavalry equipments of the French Cavalry force available in 1940. The Cavalry used horse drawn Anti-Tank weapons and machine guns with other equipments shown elsewhere in these lists. French Hussar’s, Chasseurs a Cheval (Use Line Cavalry listings) and Algerian/Moroccan Spahis colonial cavalry units are well covered in this range. For additional French Cavalry units – see also Horse drawn and motorised equipments that were typically on the French Cavalry units Orders of Battle in other parts of my French Army Lists.

French Artillery units were still using a mixture of world war one designs, some being updated, as well as more modern types. The classic 75mm Field gun is available in wooden or pneumatic wheeled versions. Horse drawn transport and artillery was still around in significant numbers at this time. The French had done much to pioneer motorised transport. Many of their heavier guns were pulled by effective heavy transport tractors much of which was re-used by the German army after the fall of France. Some of the French Transport vehicles were successfully exported before the outbreak of war in 1939.

French Motorcycles, dismounted motorcyclists and armoured car regiment troops France had a solid motorcycle industry that produced many good types used by the military. Like the Germans, the French had equipped units as motorcycle reconnaissance troops. These French highly mobile, motorised units gave a good account of themselves. Many of these motorcycle designs were widely adopted by German and other axis forces after the fall of France in 1940. Dismounted figures are also available here in a variety of poses and wear the 1935 issue Havana leather jacket. These figures, when painted in different colures can be used for dismounted members of the armoured car regiments and motorcycle squadrons attached to the Cuirassiers.

French Armoured vehicles and Tanks had a number of very good qualities and were the equal or better to most German tanks in a straight head to head fight. What they lacked was consistent, imaginative leadership and aggressive deployment and control on mass. French tanks were well armoured but suffered from a single man turret design, poor speed, some lacked radios and the Char B1 Bis suffered from a restricted operating range before it needed to refuel. Most if not all these vehicles when captured, were re-used by the German or Axis forces throughout the war and on many fronts. All Our Models are cast from metal parts. Some of the bigger model tanks are substantial reproductions of the originals.

French Army military transport vehicles and Armoured Personnel carriers. French Military thinking of the post 1918 period gave rise to the Renault UE supply carrier. Military strategy of the time required an armoured carrier design to supply troops and speed was not a major consideration in the design. Supplies would be “dropped off” from these carriers via a tipping load bay by drivers under armour, able to cross “no mans land” in relative safety. Many of the French half track designs were very advanced and performed well. Motorised Infantry – Dragons Porte, were highly mobile, well trained and well equipped troops.

Polish Infantry and support Weapons The Polish Army of 1939 was well organised and fought a number of stubborn engagements against the Germans. The levels of casualties they inflicted on the German armies particularly to the Panzers, gave cause for concern amongst the higher German command.

The British forces and the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) have a particular affection for me. My Father was in the BEF and fought with the Ox and Bucks light infantry seeing actions in Belgium in 1940. His unit fought many a hard battle with the Germans on the Escaut canal, and holding the Ypres-Comines canal line for 3 days of bitter fighting to help keep the Dunkirk pocket open for the escape of others. Wounded, he remained a POW till wars end. British Forces involved in conflicts from 1937 till mid 1942 and in some cases with certain equipments, beyond. A lot of the early kit and equipment saw extended service in the later years of the conflict with Japan in the far east.

The Armed forces of the Netherlands – The Dutch 1940-1942 The Dutch Army gave a good account of its self and fought well in many places. Their stubbornness delayed the German “time table” eventually leading to the Germans “terror bombing Rotterdam” in an effort to speed up the capitulation of the Dutch armed forces. There are many interesting and exciting scenarios to be modelled and/or gamed including the “a bridge to far – 1940” campaign, The fighting over the Rotterdam airfields, defensive fighting against the German 1st Cavalry Division and the seaplane landings and assaults on the Rotterdam bridges. Many of these units are useable to help represent the Dutch forces that fought the Japanese in the far east in 1941/42.

The Army of Belgium 1940. The Belgian Army of 1940 has an interesting array of weaponry available to it. Some of which is World War 1 vintage and was given to Belgium by Germany as part of its WW1 reparations payments. Still in service in 1940, these make interesting additions to any WW2 army in 1940. The Belgian army in places, gave a good account of its self but lacked modern tactics, equipments and forward thinking by its high command. The Chasseurs d Ardennes fought well, delaying the Germans in places in a set of fighting retreat actions in the forests of the Ardennes. Many good scenarios and modelling opportunities exist for the Campaign of May 1940 using these miniatures. Code Belgian Infantry and accessories Price Quantity

Norwegian Armed forces – 1938 till 1940

Russian 1902 75mm Putilov field gun: At the end of World War 1, the Romanian Army had a number of 76.2mm Putilov model 1902 field guns captured from the Russian Army. Starting with 1936, for calibre standardization of the various guns in service, the existing Putilov guns were re-tubed for the 75mm round. The resulting artillery piece, the quick firing Schneider-Putilov model 1902/36 field gun, serviced the artillery regiments of the infantry divisions.

Krupp Model 02 75mm Field gun : The Krupp 7.5 cm Model 1903 was a field gun used by Denmark and the Netherlands in World War II. It also formed the basis for the Type 38 75 mm Field Gun used by Japan. In Danish service it was known as the 03 L/30 and doesn't appear to have been modified in any significant way before World War II. The Dutch bought some 204 and purchased a production-license as well. 120 appear to have been manufactured in the Netherlands, where it was known as the 7-veld (DutGun1 - NM10 Krupp Siderius). The Germans designated these guns as the 7.5 cm Feldkanone 243(h) (AxisGun1)after the Battle of the Netherlands. Danish guns were known in German service as the 7.5 cm Feldkanone 240(d).

Axis Army Units The core of these ranges are the Allied Armies of the early war years. These axis forces represent miniatures not easily available in 20mm and that compliment the allied miniatures. The Italians had a number of arms manufacturers who exported so you will find some of their artillery in other armies. The German infantry and particularly the support weapons are covered for the early war era. All the infantry carry the early war army infantry equipment rigs. Use of MG08 HMG and the Anti-tank rifle help to give German units a true early war period feel.

Italian Empire Armed forces – 1935 till 1943

The Italian Empire and some of its armed forces are covered in this range. Forces here are applicable to campaigns in Abyssinia, the Western Desert, France in 1940, Greece, Albania, Tunisia, Scilly and the Italian mainland. Also, elements of the Italian division that went to fight in Russia for the Axis in 1941 can be covered.

The German Army of the Blitzkrieg era from 1939 – till 1942

The German Army is represented here by a core list and an associated types list to be used after the fall of primarily the French and other allied armies. The Core list deals with German forces in service from 1938 until late 1941 when the Army “Y” strap became the more common standard issue. There are some additional new and widly used in the early war period German support weapons available here. The MG08 HMG, MG 08-15 & Czech ZB 26 LMG’s and the PZB39 Anti-tank rifle. The “associated types” are those equipments captured by the Germans and re-used by the Germans and other axis forces till in some cases, till war’s end in 1945. Practically nearly all the French motorised and armoured equipments were re-used in some form or another. The soft skins vehicles and in particular the half tracks, were widely adopted. Much of the heavier artillery of Belgium, Holland and France, also found its way into Axis service. (New) There is a completely new range of early war German Paratroopers now available. These are suitable for German operations up to and including Create in 1941. These are the latest designs to come from EWM. They allow gamers to accurately represent western front battles in Norway, Holland, France and Belgium using early war German paratroopers. The core list types represents the German infantry units of the army and includes some Cavalry units. The German 1st Cavalry Division was involved in the invasion of Holland and fought the Dutch in May 1940. A good array of infantry support weapon’s are represented including the main Anti-Tank rifle in service with German Army, the PZB39. GerSet 2 is a collection of support weapon/light artilleryman for use in manning other makers ATG’s or 75mm Infantry guns.

Thanks also to Tom Lobley, the original creator of the Toms Tins range. His work is outstanding in my view and I had always been a good customer of his. Now, he gets to do what he like best, which is make new models for the range. I too am adding to the range and we have plans to expand it further during the coming year of 2011.
