If you search the internet looking for “planted tanks” or “bio-active terrariums” then you will come across some examples that are, quite simply, stunning. Waterfalls, misting systems, ponds, cliffs; you name it and you will find an example of a terrarium that someone has spent hundreds of pounds on and used just as many hours creating it.

To the new “Bio-Activist” this complexity can be off putting, and may even prevent them from trying out a planted terrarium for the first time. Many keepers don’t realise that they can gain all the benefits, and beauty, of a bio-active system, but with a simple and effective set up.

For the retailer a planted tank opens up a whole new area, with the possibility of additional sales of products and animals. In this booklet we have concentrated on a simple step by step set up guide for Crested Geckos, although this set up could be used for a whole host of arboreal species.

Create A Bio-ActiveCrested Gecko Set Up

Bio-active tanks depend on recreating a soil structure suitable for plant growth. First a layer of inert drainage material, like expanded clay balls, is placed in the base of the tank to act as a moisture resevoir. Then, a permeable membrane is placed over the clay balls to allow water, air and plant roots to pass through but not the substrate.

The plant choice depends on personal preference, the environment being created and the species of animal being kept. Tall, or climbing plants should be placed at the back of the tank, low growing, spreading plants at the front. As they grow it may be necessary to trim more vigorous plants to prevent them from overcrowding slower growing species.

Heat and light can be provided from above, using suitable bulbs, LED lights, compact lamps or fluorescent tubes. You can also provide heat by using a heat mat attached to the outside of the terrarium, positioned near the top of the tank. This creates a vertical temperature and UV gradient in the tank.

Naturalistic terrariums need specialist substrates which are low in nutrients, free draining and resistant to compaction. Spread a 3-5cm layer of substrate over the drainage material, and then build retaining walls from rocks or wood, before placing a thicker layer of substrate behind them. This creates an interesting terraced surface with deeper areas for planting. Use rocks or branches to create vertical climbing areas.

In our Crested Gecko set up, we checked out 2 different set ups for providing heat and light.

The first option we used was the Zoo Med compact double deep dome with a 15W Exo Terra Daytime Heat Lamp and a Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0 Mini-Compact to provide heat and UV, with the light for the plants provided from a Arcadia Jungle Dawn in a Zoo Med Naturalistic Terrarium Hood.

The second option was using a Zoo Med 25W Repti-Basking Spot Lamp for heat, with the plant light and UV supplied from the smallest Zoo Med UVB/LED fitting. These slimline fittings contain LED lights for plant growth along with a T5 High Output Reptisun Tube for UV.

This set up creates a whole host of opportunities to add extra sales to a more normal “standard” Crestie set up, and we think that it will also provide a better environment for the Cresties as well.

The key point to get across to a keeper (especially a new one) is how much nicer this type of enclosure looks, and how much the Crestie will love it. Pushing the “natural” element, how much better live plants than plastic ones are for example, really appeals to many owners who just want to do the best for their pet. Feeding this desire is key to overcoming the price barrier, and this is where a skilful sales person really comes into their own.

The two options we experimented with are built around the same core products for the housing, substrate and décor, but provide the heating and lighting in different ways. Both options for heating and lighting worked well, so it is just down to the preference of the keeper which one they go for.

Bio-Active set ups are fast becoming the new area of growth in the reptile market and now is the time to take advantage. By creating an interesting and eye catching in-store display coupled with a product showcase you can take advantage of this blooming market. Why not run a promotion or even create a competitively priced starter bundle to encourage new budding Bio-Active enthusiasts to have a go.

Keeping display plants in top condition is a must if you want to build up a reputation as the place to come to for live plants and Bio-active paraphernalia. Shop lighting will not be enough to ensure your plants are healthy and thriving. We have found that having a 36” Zoo Med Flora Sun and Ultra Sun powered with an Arcadia Ultra Seal controller not only keeps plants looking healthy, but actually stimulates growth. To hold these tubes in place the ZM magclips are an excellent solution.

You will also need to be able to water these plants without soaking the stock or flooding the shop. We use Propagator trays WITHOUT holes, the very same ones used in the PR Tortoise Weed kits. We chose to use a 10.0 Compact UV as the lamp is positioned above the mesh top of the terrarium, which will block a lot of the UV. There is also a good height to this set up, which gives a really good vertical UV gradient, similar to the temperature gradient created by the lights.

In our test we achieved a basking zone temperature of between 23 and 26oC and a UVI of 0.5 to 1.5. Although a UVI of 1.5 may be considered to be high for Cresties, we think that the presence of a vertical UV gradient and the shade provided by the growing plants makes this acceptable. You could of course drop to a 5.0 bulb to lower the UVI if desired.

We also prefer the low wattage white lamps, as these provide low levels of light which can be left on all of the time and will not impact activity at night. A white bulb may seem a strange bulb for a night time light source, but moonlight is actually very dim, white light. Reptiles are perfectly capable of seeing red light and a red night light is not very natural. The difference in light intensity between daylight and a red night light will usually make reptiles see this as a day/night cycle, but blue light actually stimulates areas of the brain and can cause reptiles to be more active. The 15W Daytime heat lamp particularly gave a really nice, low level illumination which worked well.

This set up worked well without a thermostat and the open mesh top with heating above means the risk of overheating is very, very small. As retailers it is still necessary to point out that its best to control the heat lamp with a thermostat.

We have a new edible plant in stock that we are trialling; Callisia repens is suitable for reptiles, birds and mammals. We recommend customers cut pieces of the plant off to feed to their pet, rather than putting the whole plant into the tank and possibly causing stomach upsets if the whole plant is gorged! this will prolong the life of the plant too.

Callisia repens, commonly called the Turtle Vine is a tropical creeper found in moist areas. It does not like bright, hot light but thrives in warm, moist, shaded conditions which makes it ideal for the planted terrarium. Additionally this plant is edible and ideal for feeding to Tortoises, Bearded dragons, Uromastyx and other omnivorous or herbivorous reptiles. The whole pot can be placed in the enclosure, or it can be grown on the windowsill and stems cut off for feeding. Birds and Mammals also love it.

Crested Geckos are one of the “core” pet reptiles now, alongside Beardies, Leopard Geckos and so on.
