Friday, February 23 – Thursday, March 1 Return Engagement! OLD JOY Friday, Monday & Wednesday at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30; Tuesday at 10:00 only; Thursday at 8:00, 10:00; No shows Saturday (2/24) or Sunday (2/25) (2006) dir Kelly Reichardt w/Daniel London, Will Oldham [76 min] Can an old friendship rekindle its spark? Former MassArt and School of the Museum of Fine Arts student, Kelly Reichardt’s luminous film explores this theme with subtlety and insight. Mark (London) and Kurt (indie music icon Oldham), whose lives have gone in different directions, reunite for a weekend camping trip. Kurt is still a free spirit, while Mark has a partner and a baby on the way. But these pals are in a ruminative mood, trying to get hold of a common memory. As the terrain changes from urban to wilderness, so do they, registering a range of emotions that define and redefine their relationship. This affecting study of male bonding is a Whitmanesque exploration of nature, human and elemental, and the idea that old joy can have new connotations. – notes from New Directors/New Films 2006 One of the most highly acclaimed independent films of 2006: “Exquisite.” – LA Weekly “[A] quiet treasure of a film.” – Entertainment Weekly “Revelatory… A pleasure to watch.” – Los Angeles Times “Finely honed and delicate.” – Wesley Morris, The Boston Globe “A triumph of modesty and of seriousness that also happens to be one of the finest American films of the year.” – The New York Times Friday, March 2 – Thursday, March 8 Return Engagement! David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE at 1:00, 4:30, 8:00 Please note: 8:00 only on Fri (3/2); 1:30, 5:00, 8:30 on Sun (3/4); No Shows on Wed (3/7) (2006) dir David Lynch w/Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Jeremy Irons, Harry Dean Stanton, Diane Ladd, Grace Zabriskie, Scott Coffey [172 min] The latest effort from one of America’s greatest living film artists, David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE was shot entirely on video and it represents both an experiment in filmmaking and a leap forward in the director’s career. With the freedom allowed by not paying for every precious foot of film, Lynch and his cast embark on a journey of discovery: using the char- acters and a loose plot, Lynch would write a scene and then film it immediately afterwards, following the story where it wanted to take him rather than trying to tie it down to a complete screenplay first. The result is revelatory. Lynch’s periodic muse, Laura Dern (Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart) stars as Nikki, a Hollywood actress who has just accepted a great role despite an ominous visit by a neighbor (Zabriskie). As the filming of the movie within the movie unfolds, Nikki and her leading man Devon (Theroux) find themselves not only inhabiting their characters but being inhabited by them. Soon, the line between film and reality is completely erased and the question of Nikki’s true identity comes to the fore. “You could say, I suppose, that INLAND EMPIRE is about an actress in a Hollywood film that's been cursed by Gypsies. But that's like saying Ulysses is a story about a guy who sells newspaper ads.” – Andrew O’Hehir, Salon “[Laura Dern] triumphs in the role of a lifetime. Several lifetimes, in fact, as her character metamorphoses with every story within a story and dream within a dream.” – Peter Keough, The Boston Phoenix ★★★★!” – Ty Burr, The Boston Globe Friday, March 9 – Wednesday, March 14 Repertory Series! CABINET OF CURIOSITY: THE FILMS OF THE BROTHERS QUAY Few other contemporary filmmakers create a more complete visual world than the Quay Brothers. Born in America but living and working in London, this pair of identical twins (Stephen and Timothy) have been making short films and music videos for years and have influenced dozens of other film artists. With their second feature film, PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES, the pair adds new tools to their formidable repertoire, experimenting with digital backdrops and computer effects while still maintaining their handmade aesthetic. We celebrate their years of idiosyncratic filmmaking with a retrospective of all of their domestically avail- able films, including brand new 35mm prints of many of their most potent short works and their two features, PIANO TUNER and INSTITUTE BENJAMENTA. “The Brothers Quay find their inspiration in Eastern European literature and classical music and art, their work distinguished by its dark humor and an uncanny feeling for color and texture. Masters of miniaturization, they turn their tiny sets into unforgettable worlds suggestive of long-repressed childhood dreams.” – Film Forum, NYC Please see below for complete line-up and schedule for this series. Friday, March 16 – Thursday, March 29 Repertory Series! HOT FUZZTIVAL We at the Brattle were big fans of the hilarious horror/comedy SHAUN OF THE DEAD and so we are particularly excited about being involved in the release of the new film by its creators, HOT FUZZ. Just as SHAUN was not so much a spoof of zombie films as it was a loving homage to the genre, HOT FUZZ uses the platform of the “super cop” genre as a jumping off point to create a brilliant action/comedy. The films in this series are the seeds from which HOT FUZZ was grown. Hand picked by writer-director Edgar Wright and actor Simon Pegg, these films range from the gripping, gritty 70s streets (THE FRENCH CONNECTION, DIRTY HARRY) to the supercool, ultraviolent Hong Kong high-rises (HARD- BOILED, INFERNAL AFFAIRS). Along the way we stop off for some rarely screened cop-genre gems including ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE, DEAD & BURIED (a mash-up of small town sheriffs and zombies!), and the insanely entertaining THE SUPER COPS (according to Wright and Pegg – the direct antecedent to HOT FUZZ). Of course, the apex of this whole event is a special preview screening of HOT FUZZ with Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg in person on Sunday, March 25. Please see below for complete line-up and schedule for this series. The only way to get tickets to the preview screening of HOT FUZZ is to attend a screening during the HOT FUZZTIVAL. Thursday, March 22 – Sunday, March 25 THE BOSTON UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL The Boston Underground Film Festival (BUFF) is an annual festival committed to the celebration of alternative vision and cultivation of independent, provocative and experimental filmmaking. By featuring work that pushes the envelope in form, style and content, BUFF seeks to be a platform for the screening of new work and a forum for the exchange of ideas amongst filmmakers, curators and audiences. This year’s festival features the following screenings. Visit www.bostonundergroundfilmfestival.com for the full line-up! Opening Night! Filmmaker will be present! AMERICAN STAG (2006) dir Ben Meade w/Adam Carolla, Melvin Van Peebles, Tommy Chong, Barbara Hammer, Linda Williams, Chris Gore, David Skal [67 min] From the birth of cinema through the 1960s in the United States, most porno- graphic films were brief, black and white, anonymously produced films known as 'stag films', 'blue movies', or 'smokers,' so called because of the smoke-filled rooms where men would gather for private screenings. Ben Meade’s documen- tary examines the 'stag' film not as much for the subject matter or lack of produc- tion value, but as a metaphor and reflection of American popular culture. The Alloy Orchestra will be performing an improvised score to a selection of stag films curated from the director's personal collection. Closing Night! Filmmakers and Cast will be present! ROMAN (2006) dir Angela Bettis w/Lucky McKee, Kristen Bell, Nectar Rose [93 min] Four years ago, a film called May came out of nowhere to introduce us to the extraordinary talents of director Lucky McKee and actress Angela Bettis. Since then, McKee has cemented his status as one of the horror genre’s premier direc- tors and Bettis has established herself as horror fans’ favorite scream queen. But can Angela direct? Can Lucky act? ROMAN is not a sequel to May. ROMAN is not a retelling of May. ROMAN is the polar opposite of May, a mirror image from start to finish. From the demeanor of the title characters; to the look and feel of the two films, it is obvious that ROMAN is a lot more than star and director switching roles. Scripted by McKee before May even started shooting, ROMAN stands on its own but also serves to compli- ment its sister film. Friday, March 30 – Tuesday, April 2 Repertory Series! MUPPETS™, MUSIC & MAGIC: JIM HENSON’S LEGACY The Brattle is proud to host this weekend festival of movies, TV shows, and rare short films which pays tribute to Jim Henson, one of the world’s most inspired and innovative film and puppetry artists. A visionary TV producer, film director, and world-class puppeteer who created indelible characters, Henson brought his unique combination of childlike wonder and adult sophistication to his ground- breaking work for children and adults. MUPPETS™, MUSIC & MAGIC explores all facets of this prolific performer’s output, including rarely seen projects (like the Storyteller series) and old favorites (Sesame Street, The Muppet Show). Time Magazine said of Jim Henson “[he] had the most profound influence on children of any entertainer of his time.” Morning and early afternoon screenings feature films for the entire family, while evening programs focus on Henson’s experimen- tal work, rarities, and films for teens and adults. Produced by The Jim Henson Legacy and Brooklyn Academy of Music. Tour organizer Irena Kovarova. Please visit: www.JimHensonLegacy.org and www.BAM.org. Please see below for complete line-up and schedule for this series. Thursday, April 5 – Wednesday, April 11 Repertory Series! PERSPECTIVES ON WORLD WAR II A recent batch of terrific films has brought one of history’s most indelible wars into the foreground once again. With Clint Eastwood’s Oscar nominated LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA and FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS as our touchstone, the Brattle explores a wide range of perspectives on World War II – from pre-war coyness (THE LADY VANISHES) to battleground survival (TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH) to post- war corruption (THE GOOD GERMAN). Traversing a number of decades, this series provides not only the perspective of history but also the perspectives of different outlooks on the war – and yet, it only scratches the surface as it includes only Americanized viewpoints. During this time of a much-questioned war, it is impor- tant to remember the scars and implications of even the most justified of conflicts. Please see below for complete line-up and schedule for this series. Friday, April 13 – Thursday, April 19 Return Engagement! Newly Restored! ARMY OF SHADOWS at 7:00 (+ Sat & Sun at 2:00); Please Note: Monday (4/16) at 8:00pm only; No shows Thursday (4/19) (1969) dir Jean-Pierre Meville w/Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Simone Signoret [145 min] As something of a sequel to our “Perspectives on WWII” series, we present a return engagement of one of the most widely lauded foreign films of 2006 – the only surprise being that it was made almost 40 years ago! Jean-Pierre Melville was France’s undisputed master of neo-noir, with such classics as Le Samourai, Bob Le Flambeur and Les Dolous under his belt. In ARMY OF SHADOWS, he applies his formidable talent for thrills – and personal experience – to a neo-realist account of French Resistance fighters during WWII. On over 25 critics’ “Top Ten Films of 2006” lists, ARMY OF SHADOWS follows the exploits of a resistance cell in Marseilles during the Nazi occupation of France. The cell is led by stoic Phillipe (Ventura) and consists of a motley assortment of patriots who carry out their small but essential missions under the noses of the occupying force. Eschewing the action pyrotechnics of Hollywood’s 60s films on the war (see THE DIRTY DOZEN), ARMY OF SHADOWS is a quiet, realistic account of men and women thrust into dramatic roles by extraordinary circumstances. ★★★★!” – Ty Burr, The Boston Globe Also Friday, April 13 – Thursday, April 19 The Late Show: Area Theatrical Premiere! WILD TIGERS I HAVE KNOWN at 9:45pm (+ Sat & Sun at 5:00); Please note: Thursday (4/19) at 5:00 only (2006) dir Cam Archer w/Malcolm Stumpf, Patrick White, Max Paradise, Fairuza Balk, Kim Dickens, Tom Gilroy [88 min] A notably hip descendant of Gus Van Sandt’s My Own Private Idaho and Jonathan Caouette’s Tarnation, Cam Archer’s WILD TIGERS I HAVE KNOWN is a coming of age story about Logan, a junior high kid on the edge of puberty who seems pretty secure in his attraction to the same sex. While his friend makes lists about ‘how to be cool’ (“how about not making lists?” suggests Logan), Logan pines after the older ‘rebel’ kid at school, the improbably named Rodeo. Logan is too shy to express his desires and, instead, takes on a female persona (voiced by an unseen actress) who seduces Rodeo into phone sex. When Rodeo expresses an interest in hanging out with Logan their relationship becomes even more complicated. Strangely rooted in pop culture of the past – Logan resembles a long-lost Culkin brother and Rodeo recalls a low-rent Jordan Catalano – WILD TIGERS carries a deliberate timelessness about it. The performances, while uniformly excellent, are casual and laid-back. There is some drama – theoretically the community is threatened by wandering mountain lions – but in general this is a surreally elegiac film with Logan’s thoughts brought to vibrant life in intermittent, incongruous but gorgeous shots. The film perfectly captures the almost mystical nature of teenage isolation in scenes such as when Logan stares in silence at a school dance and suddenly finds himself the object of violence. Archer highlights the occasionally absurd and empty gestures that figures of authority are prone to but doesn’t dis- count them entirely as so many teen films tend to do. There are adult figures of strength for Logan including his complicated, young mother and the surprisingly savvy guidance counselor. With echoes of impressionistic beauty that bring to mind Van Sandt’s recent art films (especially Elephant) and a confessional tone that is a direct descendant of Tarnation, WILD TIGERS is a refreshingly challeng- ing entry into the world of gay art film. Friday, April 20 – Thursday, April 26 Area Theatrical Premiere! AIR GUITAR NATION at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (+ Sun at 3:30); Please Note: Saturday (4/21) at 1:30, 3:30, 8:00, 10:00; Monday (4/23) at 8:00, 10:00 (2006) dir Alexandra Lipsitz [81 min] A battle of naked ambition played out on the national and, ultimately, world stage, AIR GUITAR NATION chronicles the birth of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships as legions of aspiring rock stars live out their dreams on a quest to become the world champion in a strange world where musical ability plays second fiddle to virtual virtuosity. As the film un-reels, two aspiring rock legends strum and strut their way towards glory and the coveted national title. C. Diddy , a samurai warrior clad in a Hello Kitty breastplate and red kimono, emerges as an early favorite. But his arch nemesis from the Lower East Side, Björn Türoque, is not far behind. While C. Diddy threatens to unleash his self-professed “Asian Fury’’ on his competitors, Björn vows to take Diddy down. As the film reaches its climax, the future of Air hangs in the balance; will Björn’s technical prowess, stage presence, and ‘airness’ be enough to take him to the top, or will C. Diddy conquer all to become America’s first supreme being of Air Guitar? Full of triumph and disappointment, patriotic spirit and political tension – and, of course, invisible guitars – AIR GUITAR NATION take audiences on an inspiring, exhilarating, and ultimately hilarious journey that delves deep to find out what it truly takes to become the best in the world and find the inner meaning of the chant, “Make Air, Not War.” Winner, Audience Award, SXSW Film Festival “One of the most fun documentaries I suspect will ever be seen.” – Ain’t It Cool News Saturday, February 24 Special Music Performance! Of course, there’s a beautiful woman (Saint) to take his mind off of his trouble and the thrilling climax at Mount Rushmore to top it all off. This is a marvelous film for families with older children to enjoy together. There is, of course, some death, destruction and sexual innuendo but, as with most late 50s films, it’s all pretty harmless by today’s standards. Tickets for reading attendees will be $5.00. It brings to the screen a poignant and transporting version of Jhumpa Lahiri’s best-selling novel. The film follows one family, the Gangulis, as they travel from Calcutta to New York City. There they give birth to a son (Penn) who, as he grows up, must find a balance between the traditions of his parents’ world and the passions and responsibilities of contemporary America. CABINET OF CURIOSITY: FILMS OF THE BROS QUAY Friday, March 9 – Monday, March 12 TALES OF THE BROTHERS QUAY PART 1: Fri at 7:30; Sat at 12:30, 4:15, 8:00; Sun at 2:00, 5:45, 9:30; Mon at 8:00 PART 2: Fri at 9:15; Sat at 2:15, 6:00, 9:45; Sun at 3:45, 7:30; Mon at 9:45 This program of Quay masterworks, many of them in new prints, includes weird architec- ture, living skulls and found-object robots in REHEARSALS FOR EXTINCT ANATOMIES (1986); a porcelain doll’s explorations of a dreamer’s imagination in THE COMB (1991); ping-pong balls bat- tling a bunny in ARE WE STILL MARRIED? (1992; “among the most sophisticated and hauntingly enigmatic music videos ever created” – NY Times); a pair of severed hands in TALES FROM THE VIENNA WOODS (1992); broken pencils and lead shavings in IN ABSENTIA (2000); the nightmarish netherworld of STREET OF CROCODILES 1986); and more! – notes from Film Forum, NYC “These astonishing artists, working in an unlikely form, awaken our senses. They combine a demiurgic, Caligari-like mastery over their creations with the gentle dream archaeology of Joseph Cornell: their puppets look less like things invented than like things discovered.” – Terrence Rafferty, The New Yorker (The two programs may be viewed individually or as a double feature. There will be a 20 minute intermission between the two parts. The complete program is approximately 165 minutes long) Tuesday, March 13 INSTITUTE BENJAMENTA at 8:00, 10:00 (1995) dirs Stephen Quay, Timothy Quay w/Mark Rylance, Alice Krige, Gottfried John, Daniel Smith [104 min] The Quays first feature film (and their first film with extensive use of human performers) tells of an enigmatic institute where domes- tic service courses are taught. A young man named Jakob (Rylance) is our vehicle for entry into this strange world, run by an eccentric brother/sister team, where the classes seem arbitrary and bizarre. The Quays use their meditative style to great effect in creat- ing an idiosyncratic atmosphere where anything seems possible. “INSTITUTE BENJAMENTA is a triumph of the surreal, a master- work of fantasy, and a breathtakingly tenebrous walk off the beaten path and into the dark, pulsing forest of dreams.” – The Austin Chronicle Wednesday, March 14 THE PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (2005) dirs Stephen Quay, Timothy Quay w/Amira Casar, Cesar Saracho, Gottfried John, Assumpta Serna [99 min] THE PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES tells the story of a nefari- ous doctor who abducts an opera singer and takes her to his mys- terious island where he keeps her as a bird in a gilded cage and schemes to make her his for eternity. When an innocent piano tuner, Don Felisberto Fernandez, is invited to the island to prepare for a performance and tend to the doctor’s strange mechanical tableau, he finds himself strangely drawn to the opera singer. Saying that Don Felisberto ‘finds more than he bargained for’ seems trite in the face of the Quays’ unrivaled capacity for creating scenes of astonishing beauty and remarkable complexity. “Nothing short of a masterpiece.” – The Los Angeles Times HOT FUZZTIVAL Friday, March 16 & Saturday, March 17 THE FRENCH CONNECTION at 7:15 (+ Sat at 2:30) (1971) dir William Friedkin w/Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, Fernando Rey, Tony Lo Bianco [104 min] Simply one of the best flat-out police thrillers of all time. THE FRENCH CONNECTION was shot on location in the mean streets of 70s New York City as it follows the efforts of an elite team of police lead by “Popeye” Doyle (Hackman) to take out an interna- tional drug smuggling ring. It almost goes without saying that the highlight of the film (and one of the highlights of all cop films) is the over-the-top chase between Doyle in a car on the streets of Brooklyn and his prey in an elevated train above. DIRTY HARRY at 5:00, 9:30 (1971) dir Don Siegel w/Clint Eastwood, Harry Guardino, Reni Santoni, John Vernon [102 min] “Are you feelin’ lucky, punk?” Before he turned into a cartoon-ish action hero in the 80s, Clint Eastwood’s indelible “Dirty” Harry Callahan character was a cop over the edge in a San Francisco overridden with crime. Faced with the prospect of a crazed rooftop sniper released on a technicality and threatening to kill even more of the city’s residents, Callahan sets out to take him out – by any means necessary. Sunday, March 18 LETHAL WEAPON at 3:30, 7:45, 10:00 (1987) dir Richard Donner w/Mel Gibson, Danny Glover [110 min] The epitome of 80s cop-buddy movies (and there are so many to choose from!), LETHAL WEAPON features a young and hunky Mel Gibson as an out-of-control cop with a death wish whose superi- ors saddle him with older, crustier Danny Glover in the hope that it will tone him down. The sharp, inspired script by Shane Black and the obvious chemistry between Gibson and Glover make this an exceptionally entertaining film. Monday, March 19 & Tuesday, March 20 HARD BOILED Mon at 5:00, 7:30, 10:00; Tue at 5:30 only (1992) dir John Woo w/Yun-Fat Chow, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Teresa Mo, Philip Chan [126 min] “Hard to beat. To this day, and by some measure, HARD BOILED remains the benchmark for relentless, thrilling, visceral action. Still the most action packed 2 hours of celluloid in cinematic history. John Woo hits a delirious high in his Cantonese career with a fist- ful of amazing set pieces that put other directors whole careers to shame. From the white-knuckle teahouse opener to the relentless hospital closer, the film has more showstoppers than an MGM musical.” – HOT FUZZ director Edgar Wright Wednesday, March 21 THE SUPER COPS at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (1974) dir Gordon Parks w/Ron Leibman, David Selby [90 min] “Little seen and hugely underrated, this serio-comic crime caper was Gordon Parks' follow up his two hugely successful Shaft films. Based on the true life exploits of NYPD officers David Greenberg and Robert Hantz, dubbed ‘Batman and Robin’ by reporters, the film falls somewhere between the corruption scan- dal of Serpico and the absurdist humour of Catch 22. [The film] features a hilarious performance by Ron Leibman; a fan- tastic actor who something of a minor cult icon thanks to parts in this, The Hot Rock, Slaughterhouse Five and more recently Garden State. If you've only seen Leibman as Rachel's Dad in “Friends,” then catch him cleaning up Manhattan and kicking a whole lot of ass. The cult of Ron Leibman starts here!” – Edgar Wright Sunday, March 25 Free Preview Screening! Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg in Person! HOT FUZZ at 5:30pm (2007) dir Edgar Wright w/Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Bill Bailey, Tim Barlow, Steve Coogan [120 min] Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright – the makers of Shaun of the Dead – are back together for a fabulously funny and fast-paced action-comedy. Pegg plays Nicholas Angel, a top London cop who’s so good that he makes his fellow officers look bad. Banished to a sleepy, seemingly crime-free village Angel soon finds himself up to his badge in bodies, though he has a hard time convincing his new colleagues that they’re dealing with murder. The style of a Hollywood action-thriller is crossed with the sensibility of the team’s enduringly popular TV series Spaced, cre- ating a sharp, surprising and endlessly entertaining comedy. – notes from the ICA, London Please note that although this screening is free you must obtain a pass by attending a screening during the Hot Fuzztival . Monday, March 26 ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE at 5:00, 7:30, 10:00 (1973) dir James William Guercio w/Robert Blake, Billy Green Bush, Mitch Ryan, Jeannine Riley [114 min] “Ex-music producer and rock manager's James William Guercio's one and only directorial credit is a gem among cop films; one that both sits proudly in the idiosyncratic golden period of 70's cinema and marks a bittersweet counterpoint to Easy Rider. Diminutive Robert Blake's ‘Big John’ Wintergreen is dwarfed by his colleagues and the surrounding Monument Valley; the quintessential small cop in the Big Country. His motorcycle traffic cop has lofty ambitions, but a promotion to Homicide and the chance to crack a mysterious murder isn't all it's cracked up to be. Beautifully shot by the late Conrad Hall, this is a funny, heartbreak- ing and sometimes brutal film. Its classic final shot is one to behold.” – Edgar Wright Tuesday, March 27 BULLITT at 5:00, 7:30, 10:00 (1968) dir Peter Yates w/Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset, Don Gordon, Robert Duvall [113 min] The quintessential ‘cool cop’ flick, BULLITT features McQueen at the height of his game as Frank Bullitt, a tough San Francisco cop who is handpicked to protect a witness. The witness winds up shot and Bullitt becomes determined to catch the people responsible – including a leak within the department! A true classic of cool. Wednesday, March 28 DEAD AND BURIED at 8:00 (1981) dir Gary Sherman w/James Farentino, Melody Anderson, Jack Albertson, Robert Englund [92 min] So often in horror films, the authorities are painted as helpless in the face of something that doesn’t fit into their definition of reality and an outsider must save the day. In this rarely screened cult film, however, it’s a small town sheriff must rise to the challenge when his Rhode Island hamlet is overrun by the walking dead. He teams up with the local mortician – thus forming one of the oddest of oddball duos – to uncover the source of the strange happenings. THE HIDDEN at 10:00 (1987) dir Jack Sholder w/Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Nouri, Claudia Christian, Clarence Felder [96 min] Another oddball duo, but this time, one half of the team (MacLachlan) is an FBI agent possessed by an alien sent to Earth to track down a psychotic, body-skipping entity. A police detective (Nouri) is assigned to aid the agent and together they follow the trail of death and destruction that the entity leaves behind. Beginning with a spectacular car chase, THE HIDDEN is a thrill ride from beginning to end. Thursday, March 29 INFERNAL AFFAIRS at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30 (2002) dir Wai Keung Lau, Siu Fai Mak w/Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Anthony Wong Chow-Sang, Eric Tsang, Kelly Chen [101 min] This remarkable thriller from Hong Kong was recently reconfig- ured into Martin Scorsese’s Boston-set The Departed. Don’t dis- miss this film if you’ve already seen Scorsese’s film though, the original is as sleek and well-acted as the American version with Andy Lau as the hunky mobster posing as a cop and Tony Leung as the brooding cop posing as a mobster. The set-pieces are thrilling and intricately put together as the two play out a doomed game of cat-and-mouse. MUPPETS™, MUSIC & MAGIC: JIM HENSON’S LEGACY Friday, March 30 THE MUPPET MOVIE at 7:00 (1979) dir James Frawley w/Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and the whole Muppet gang [95 min] From Kermit the Frog’s humble origins in a swamp, to the entire gang being hired by studio head Orson Welles, THE MUPPET MOVIE is an absolute delight. As Kermit makes his way to fabled Hollywood, he assembles his team of like-minded individuals, including Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the Great, and others. The movie includes Kermit’s heart-tugging “Rainbow Connection,” and the film ends on a surprisingly existential note. [For families with children, ages 6 and up] MUPPETS MUSICAL MOMENTS at 9:00 Music was always an integral part of The Muppet Show, and we have assembled a collection of some of the classic music numbers interpreted as only the Muppets can. This compilation features a wide range of musical genres, including performances by guest stars Harry Belafonte, Elton John, and Debbie Harry – as well as the Muppets performing some of their own classic numbers including the timelessly catchy “Mehna Mehna.” [For children of all ages; approx 75 min] Saturday, March 31 THE ADVENTURES OF ELMO IN GROUCHLAND at 10:15am (1999) dir Gary Halvorson w/Elmo, Mandy Patinkin, Vanessa Williams, Somia Manzano (Maria), Roscoe Orman (Gordon), Oscar The Grouch, Big Bird [73 min] Elmo loves his fuzzy blanket so much that he gets into a tug-of war over it with his friend Zoe, losing it in far-off Grouchland. Nothing will deter Elmo from retrieving his treasured possession, plunging himself into a series of adventures including a battle of wits with the Queen of Trash. His Sesame Street buddies come to the rescue and help him learn a valuable lesson about sharing and friendship. [For families with young children, ages 3-7] MUPPETS MUSICAL MOMENTS at 11:45am (Please see above for description.) [For children of all ages; approx 75 min] THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER at 1:30pm (1981) dir Jim Henson w/Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and the whole gang [95 min] Intrepid reporters Kermit, Fozzie, and Gonzo go to London to inter- view fashion designer Lady Holiday (Rigg), whose jewels have been stolen. When the jewel thieves strike again and Holiday’s sec- retary, Miss Piggy, is accused of the crime, it’s Kermit and friends to the rescue. Memorable eccentrics like John Cleese and Peter Falk join in the fun, but the scenes with Miss Piggy on a motorcycle steal the show. [For families with children, ages 6 and up] A BETTER WORLD: LIVING IN HARMONY at 3:30pm Fraggle Rock (1983) Directed by Jim Henson. An episode of the rarely seen Fraggle Rock TV series that contrasts three communi- ties – the musical Fraggles, the industrious Doozers, and the giant Gorgs, who all co-exist in a carefully balanced underground world – with those mysterious creatures who live above ground, the humans. Despite their differences, the groups are interdependent, demonstrating the ideal of harmony and peace in the world. Followed by The Song of the Cloud Forest (1989) Directed by Jim Henson, Art Direction by Cheryl Henson. This beautiful evocation of the rain- forest with stunning color graphics focuses on the story of a golden toad that must avoid the ‘uprights’ trying to capture him. [For families with children, ages 6 and up; approx 90 min] THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN at 5:30pm (1984) dir Frank Oz w/Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie [94 min] When the Muppets’ college show is a big hit, they decide to take it to Broadway, which brings adventures that could happen only in the Big Apple. Cameos include Mayor Koch, Gregory Hines, Liza Minelli, and others. The movie ends with a wedding between Kermit and his porcine love, which is part of the show within a show – or could it be for real? MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN is “a genuinely fun confection of old-fashioned entertainment.” – Variety [For families with children, ages 6 and up] COMMERCIALS & EXPERIMENTS at 7:30pm A collection of experimental shorts, crazy commercials, and other rarities from the Henson vault. Highlights include: a legendary commercial and industrial film for Wilson’s Meat that must be seen to believed, excerpts from Henson’s experimental television programs The Cube and Time Piece, an 8-minute experimental masterpiece from 1965 that showcases Henson’s talent for making music out of everyday sounds. [For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up; approx 90 min] LABYRINTH at 9:45 (1986) dir Jim Henson w/David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly [101 min] Henson returns to the land of fantasy, this time creating a modern- day Alice in Wonderland. Connelly plays Sarah, a young girl who must travel through the Labyrinth to save her baby brother from the Goblin King (Bowie). Full of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop’s typ- ically imaginative creature design, the film’s eye-popping sets, including the M.C. Escher inspired castle, create a wholly believ- able world existing just behind the facade of reality. “A remarkable achievement.” – The New York Times. [For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up] Sunday, April 1 MUPPETS FROM SPACE at 1:30 (1999) dir Tim Hill w/Gonzo, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Pepe The Prawn and the whole gang + Jeffrey Tambor, F. Murray Abraham, Josh Charles, Ray Liotta, David Arquette, Andie MacDowell [87 min] When Gonzo starts getting messages in his cereal bowl it seems that he might be close to figuring out where he comes from (and what the heck he is). Following the signs, he is drawn to a particu- lar spot for a reunion with his family but is kidnapped by a myste- rious government agency along the way. This terrific recent entry into the Muppets movie series features superb musical numbers set to funk hits by the likes of Funkadelic and James Brown. [For families with young children, ages 3 and up] MUPPET FAIRYTALES at 3:45pm The Frog Prince (1971) Directed by Jim Henson What happens when you kiss a frog? No one can better tell that classic fairytale than Kermit and his friends. The Elves and the Shoemaker (1994) Directed by David Grossman What if the elves that come to the aid of the shoemaker are actual- ly Elvises? If Rapunzel appeared on Sesame Street, what twists on the story would you expect? See these classic tales through the eyes of the Muppets in this program of rarely seen shorts. [For families with young children, ages 3-7; approx 105 min] DOG CITY & STORYTELLER at 5:15pm Dog City (1989) Originally shown on the Jim Henson Hour, Dog City features one of the most fully realized Muppet universes – an entire 1940s film noir city populated entirely by dogs (all incredibly detailed and realistic puppets). With Muppet favorite Rowlf the dog (voiced by Henson) narrating from a piano, the action and in- jokes come at a furious pace. Followed by Storyteller: The Soldier and Death (1987) Directed by Jim Henson. One of the finest episodes produced for this landmark TV series (“ingenious” – Time), The Soldier and Death recounts the tale of a soldier returning home from war being given three magic objects, which he uses to outwit a pack of demons, leading to his encounter with Death himself. Written by Oscar-winner Anthony Minghella. [for families with children, ages 6 and up; approx 90 min] THE ART OF PUPPETRY & STORYTELLING at 7:00pm Go behind the scenes to witness the magic of the Muppets in this compilation of rare footage of the variety of puppetry created by Jim Henson. See a classic episode of The Muppet Show (1979) directed by Philip Casson. A special moment in the program, Harry Belafonte sings an African song with puppets derived from tradi- tional masks. Another kind of puppetry is used in The Storyteller: The Heartless Giant (1989) directed by Jim Henson. In this episode of the remarkable TV series based on classic folk tales, an evil giant – who has hidden his heart so he will feel no emotion – tricks young prince Leo into releasing him from his dungeon. Consumed with guilt, Leo searches for the heart and learns about friendship and betrayal. [For families with children, ages 6 and up; approx 120 min] THE DARK CRYSTAL at 9:30 (1982) dirs Jim Henson, Frank Oz w/Henson, Oz, Kathryn Mullen, David Goelz, Louise Gold [93 min] Mixing Brian Froud’s conceptual design and elements of tradition- al fairy tales, Henson and longtime collaborator Frank Oz create a fantastic world ruled by the hulking dragon-like Skeksis, where an elf-like orphan must venture forth to defeat them. Using a mix of puppetry, marionettes, modern special effects, and more, Dark Crystal creates a visual world rarely equaled in any fantasy film while remaining true to its basis in universal myth. [For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up] Monday, April 2 THE ADVENTURES OF ELMO IN GROUCHLAND at 1:30 (Please see above for description.) [For families with young children, ages 3-7] MUPPETS FROM SPACE at 3:30 (Please see above for description.) [For families with young children, ages 3-7] THE DARK CRYSTAL at 5:30 (Please see above for description.) [For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up] MUPPET HISTORY 101 at 7:15pm This unique program of rarities examines the origins of the Muppets. Includes early live TV appearances, unusual commercials, guest spots on the Jimmy Dean and Dick Cavett Shows, and much more. Plus, this program contains excerpts from the rarely seen pilot for what would become The Muppet Show, The Muppets: Sex and Violence featuring a tribute to the Seven Deadly Sins. [For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up; approx 90 min] LABYRINTH at 9:30 (Please see above for description.) [For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up] Tuesday, April 3 MIRRORMASK at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30 (2005) dir Dave McKean w/Stephanie Leonidas, Gina McKee, Rob Brydon, Stephen Fry [101 min] Like the other beloved allegorical children’s stories such as Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and LABYRINTH, MIRRORMASK is more like a hallucination of fantasy and fear than a story. And who better to bring this tale to the screen than fantasy author Neil Gaiman, illustrator Dave McKean, and the Jim Henson Company? This beautifully realized film centers on a 15-year-old girl whose home life is more than a little odd but, when she finds herself at the center of a quest to save a fantasy kingdom, she begins to wish for a return to her own reality. [For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up] PERSPECTIVES ON WWII Thursday, April 5 THE GOOD GERMAN at 7:00 (2006) dir Steven Soderbergh w/George Clooney, Toby Maguire, Cate Blanchett [105 min] Soderbergh continues his cinematic experimentation with this lush, black and white neo-noir set just after WWII during the Allied occu- pation of Berlin. Shot exclusively with film technology available in the 1940s, Soderbergh crafts a typically 40s story of love and betrayal in the ruins of Berlin but infuses it with a very contempo- rary sensibility. Definitely a film to be seen on the big screen. A FOREIGN AFFAIR at 4:30, 9:15 (1948) dir Billy Wilder w/Jean Arthur, Marlene Dietrich, John Lund [122 min] Billy Wilder returned to his home city of Berlin to shoot this post- war story about a US congresswoman (Arthur) sent to Germany to look into the conditions of the US occupiers. While there, she enlists army Captain Pringle (Lund) to investigate a lounge singer (Dietrich) who, rumor has it, is a kept woman of a US officer – unaware that Pringle is the officer in question. Lightly told but with the bite of irony, A FOREIGN AFFAIR remains both a terrific romantic comedy and a fascinating document of post-war Berlin. Friday, April 6 & Saturday, April 7 FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS at 7:00 (+ Sat at 1:30) (2006) dir Clint Eastwood w/Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, John Benjamin Hickey, Barry Pepper, Jamie Bell, Paul Walker, Robert Patrick, Neal McDonough [132 min] Talk about perspective! Clint Eastwood turned in two films last year that mirror each other across one of the deciding battles of WWII. In FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, Eastwood explores the story behind one of the iconic images of the war – the raising of the American flag at the battleground of Iwo Jima. Early on in a battle that was to take many hundred lives on both sides, 6 soldiers erect the flag and become symbolic heroes of the war. LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA at 4:00, 9:30 (2006) dir Clint Eastwood w/Ken Wantanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryo Kase [142 min] Lauded as one of Eastwood’s best films as a director, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA bravely takes the point of view of the Japanese army as they face the all-out onslaught of the American forces during the battle for Iwo Jima. Told primarily from the perspective of the commanding officer, General Kuribayashi (Watanabe), and of a lowly cook (Ninomiya), LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA gives a view of WWII rarely seen by American audiences. Sunday, April 8 THE DIRTY DOZEN at 2:00, 5:00, 8:00 (1967) dir Robert Aldrich w/Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Richard Jaeckel, George Kennedy, Trini Lopez, Robert Ryan, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland [145 min] By the 1960s, Hollywood had clearly come to terms with the after- math of WWII to the extent that they felt it was time to make some good, old-fashioned action-adventure movies out of the subject and THE DIRTY DOZEN is one of the best. Prototypically tough-as- nails Major Reisman (Marvin) is put in charge of a dozen men who are deemed expendable by the top brass – in fact they are all accused of crimes that will either win them the death penalty or life in prison – and is instructed to ready them for a suicide mis- sion against a chateau packed with top ranking Nazis. Monday, April 9 THE LADY VANISHES at 8:00, 10:00 (1938) dir Alfred Hitchcock w/Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave, Paul Lukas, Dame May Whitty [97 min] Hitchcock made several films that flirted with issues raised by World War II, not the least of which being this terrific pre-war comedy-thriller. A mismatched British couple on a train trying to make it through an unnamed Eastern European country (a thinly veiled Nazi Germany) try to unravel the fate of a sweet old woman who has mysteriously vanished mid-trip. Some extremely witty writing and the undeniable chemistry between the leads aid Hitchcock in creating this indelible romantic comedy. Tuesday, April 10 ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT at 5:00, 8:00 (1942) dir Vincent Sherman w/Humphrey Bogart, Conrad Veidt, Kaaren Verne, Jane Darwell, Peter Lorre, Jackie Gleason, Phil Silvers [107 min] It’s no secret that Hollywood was quickly enlisted into the war effort by pumping out propaganda films that would keep the American public engaged in the conflict. ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT is one of the quirkier entries in this group of films. Only months after donning his signature trenchcoat in Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart was drafted into this somewhat daffy film about a gangster fighting Nazi saboteurs in Manhattan after he discovers they are responsible for the death of his favorite cheesecake baker. Plays with a short program of WWII propaganda cartoons from the Brattle archive. [approx 30 min] Wednesday, April 11 TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH at 7:00 (1949) dir Henry King w/Gregory Peck, Hugh Marlowe, Gary Merrill, Millard Mitchell [132 min] Among the more intense dramas based during WWII, TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH tells the story of a squad of pilots low on morale after suffering many losses in the skies over Germany. Enter General Frank Savage (Peck), a no-nonsense officer who is charged with making the unit once again combat ready. While real-life newsreel footage is spliced in for the air combat scenes, it is the human story that drives this classic film forward. With a par- ticularly intense performance by Peck, this film balances real emo- tion and the message of maintaining determination in the face of great loss – as the world was trying to do post-War. STALAG 17 at 4:30, 9:30 (1953) dir Billy Wilder w/William Hoden, Don Taylor, Otto Preminger, Robert Strauss, Peter Graves [120 min] Another “men-under-stress” picture, this one from a different viewpoint, as it presents us with an almost film noir tale about the practicality of surviving in a German POW camp. Featuring Holden as a deal-making US prisoner who is accused by his fellow Americans of being a spy for the German guards. In order to prove his innocence, and protect the life of an American saboteur, he must root out the real spy before time runs out. FormerMassArt and School of the Museum of Fine Artsstudent, Kelly Reichardt’s luminous film exploresthis theme with subtlety and insight. Mark(London) and Kurt (indie music icon Oldham),whose lives have gone in different directions, reunite for a weekend camping trip. Kurt is still afree spirit, while Mark has a partner and a baby on the way. But these pals are in aruminative mood, trying to get hold of a common memory. As the terrain changesfrom urban to wilderness, so do they, registering a range of emotions that defineand redefine their relationship. This affecting study of male bonding is aWhitmanesque exploration of nature, human and elemental, and the idea that oldjoy can have new connotations. – notes from New Directors/New Films 2006

INLAND EMPIREat 1:00, 4:30, 8:00 Please note: 8:00 only on Fri (3/2); 1:30, 5:00, 8:30on Sun (3/4); No Shows on Wed (3/7)(2006) dir David Lynch w/Laura Dern, JustinTheroux, Jeremy Irons, Harry Dean Stanton, DianeLadd, Grace Zabriskie, Scott Coffey [172 min]The latest effort from one of America’s greatestliving film artists, David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIREwas shot entirely on video and it represents bothan experiment in filmmaking and a leap forward in

the director’s career. With the freedom allowed by not paying for every preciousfoot of film, Lynch and his cast embark on a journey of discovery: using the char-acters and a loose plot, Lynch would write a scene and then film it immediatelyafterwards, following the story where it wanted to take him rather than trying totie it down to a complete screenplay first. The result is revelatory.

Lynch’s periodic muse, Laura Dern (Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart) stars as Nikki, aHollywood actress who has just accepted a great role despite an ominous visit by aneighbor (Zabriskie). As the filming of the movie within the movie unfolds, Nikkiand her leading man Devon (Theroux) find themselves not only inhabiting theircharacters but being inhabited by them. Soon, the line between film and reality iscompletely erased and the question of Nikki’s true identity comes to the fore.

“You could say, I suppose, that INLAND EMPIRE is about an actress in aHollywood film that's been cursed by Gypsies. But that's like saying Ulysses is astory about a guy who sells newspaper ads.” – Andrew O’Hehir, Salon

“[Laura Dern] triumphs in the role of a lifetime. Several lifetimes, in fact, as hercharacter metamorphoses with every story within a story and dream within adream.” – Peter Keough, The Boston Phoenix

“★★★★!” – Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

CABINET OF CURIOSITY: THE FILMS OF THE BROTHERS QUAYFew other contemporary filmmakers create a more complete visual world thanthe Quay Brothers. Born in America but living and working in London, this pair ofidentical twins (Stephen and Timothy) have been making short films and musicvideos for years and have influenced dozens of other film artists. With theirsecond feature film, PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES, the pair adds new tools totheir formidable repertoire, experimenting with digital backdrops and computereffects while still maintaining their handmade aesthetic. We celebrate their yearsof idiosyncratic filmmaking with a retrospective of all of their domestically avail-able films, including brand new 35mm prints of many of their most potent shortworks and their two features, PIANO TUNER and INSTITUTE BENJAMENTA.

“The Brothers Quay find their inspiration in Eastern European literature andclassical music and art, their work distinguished by its dark humor and anuncanny feeling for color and texture. Masters of miniaturization, they turn theirtiny sets into unforgettable worlds suggestive of long-repressed childhooddreams.” – Film Forum, NYC

HOT FUZZTIVALWe at the Brattle were big fans of the hilarious horror/comedy SHAUN OF THEDEAD and so we are particularly excited about being involved in the release of thenew film by its creators, HOT FUZZ. Just as SHAUN was not so much a spoof ofzombie films as it was a loving homage to the genre, HOT FUZZ uses the platformof the “super cop” genre as a jumping off point to create a brilliantaction/comedy. The films in this series are the seeds from which HOT FUZZ wasgrown. Hand picked by writer-director Edgar Wright and actor Simon Pegg, thesefilms range from the gripping, gritty 70s streets (THE FRENCH CONNECTION,DIRTY HARRY) to the supercool, ultraviolent Hong Kong high-rises (HARD-BOILED, INFERNAL AFFAIRS). Along the way we stop off for some rarelyscreened cop-genre gems including ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE, DEAD & BURIED (amash-up of small town sheriffs and zombies!), and the insanely entertaining THESUPER COPS (according to Wright and Pegg – the direct antecedent to HOTFUZZ). Of course, the apex of this whole event is a special preview screening ofHOT FUZZ with Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg in person on Sunday, March 25.

Please see below for complete line-up and schedule for this series. The onlyway to get tickets to the preview screening of HOT FUZZ is to attend a screeningduring the HOT FUZZTIVAL.

Opening Night! Filmmaker will be present!AMERICAN STAG(2006) dir Ben Meade w/Adam Carolla, Melvin Van Peebles, Tommy Chong,Barbara Hammer, Linda Williams, Chris Gore, David Skal [67 min]From the birth of cinema through the 1960s in the United States, most porno-graphic films were brief, black and white, anonymously produced films known as'stag films', 'blue movies', or 'smokers,' so called because of the smoke-filledrooms where men would gather for private screenings. Ben Meade’s documen-tary examines the 'stag' film not as much for the subject matter or lack of produc-tion value, but as a metaphor and reflection of American popular culture.

The Alloy Orchestra will be performing an improvised score to a selection ofstag films curated from the director's personal collection.

Closing Night! Filmmakers and Cast will be present!ROMAN(2006) dir Angela Bettis w/Lucky McKee, Kristen Bell, Nectar Rose [93 min]Four years ago, a film called May came out of nowhere to introduce us to theextraordinary talents of director Lucky McKee and actress Angela Bettis. Sincethen, McKee has cemented his status as one of the horror genre’s premier direc-tors and Bettis has established herself as horror fans’ favorite scream queen. Butcan Angela direct? Can Lucky act?

ROMAN is not a sequel to May. ROMAN is not a retelling of May. ROMAN is thepolar opposite of May, a mirror image from start to finish. From the demeanor ofthe title characters; to the look and feel of the two films, it is obvious that ROMANis a lot more than star and director switching roles. Scripted by McKee beforeMay even started shooting, ROMAN stands on its own but also serves to compli-ment its sister film.

PERSPECTIVES ON WORLD WAR IIA recent batch of terrific films has brought one of history’s most indelible wars intothe foreground once again. With Clint Eastwood’s Oscar nominated LETTERSFROM IWO JIMA and FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS as our touchstone, the Brattleexplores a wide range of perspectives on World War II – from pre-war coyness(THE LADY VANISHES) to battleground survival (TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH) to post-war corruption (THE GOOD GERMAN). Traversing a number of decades, this seriesprovides not only the perspective of history but also the perspectives of differentoutlooks on the war – and yet, it only scratches the surface as it includes onlyAmericanized viewpoints. During this time of a much-questioned war, it is impor-tant to remember the scars and implications of even the most justified of conflicts.

ARMY OF SHADOWSat 7:00 (+ Sat & Sun at 2:00); Please Note: Monday (4/16) at 8:00pmonly; No shows Thursday (4/19)(1969) dir Jean-Pierre Meville w/Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse,

Jean-Pierre Cassel, Simone Signoret [145 min]As something of a sequel to our “Perspectives on WWII” series, we present areturn engagement of one of the most widely lauded foreign films of 2006 – theonly surprise being that it was made almost 40 years ago! Jean-Pierre Melvillewas France’s undisputed master of neo-noir, with such classics as Le Samourai,Bob Le Flambeur and Les Dolous under his belt. In ARMY OF SHADOWS, heapplies his formidable talent for thrills – and personal experience – to a neo-realistaccount of French Resistance fighters during WWII.

On over 25 critics’ “Top Ten Films of 2006” lists, ARMY OF SHADOWS follows theexploits of a resistance cell in Marseilles during the Nazi occupation of France. The cell is led by stoic Phillipe (Ventura) and consists of a motley assortment ofpatriots who carry out their small but essential missions under the noses of theoccupying force. Eschewing the action pyrotechnics of Hollywood’s 60s films onthe war (see THE DIRTY DOZEN), ARMY OF SHADOWS is a quiet, realistic accountof men and women thrust into dramatic roles by extraordinary circumstances.

WILD TIGERS I HAVE KNOWNat 9:45pm (+ Sat & Sun at 5:00); Please note: Thursday (4/19) at 5:00 only (2006) dir Cam Archer w/Malcolm Stumpf, Patrick White, Max Paradise, FairuzaBalk, Kim Dickens, Tom Gilroy [88 min]A notably hip descendant of Gus Van Sandt’s My Own Private Idaho and JonathanCaouette’s Tarnation, Cam Archer’s WILD TIGERS I HAVE KNOWN is a coming ofage story about Logan, a junior high kid on the edge of puberty who seems prettysecure in his attraction to the same sex. While his friend makes lists about ‘how tobe cool’ (“how about not making lists?” suggests Logan), Logan pines after theolder ‘rebel’ kid at school, the improbably named Rodeo. Logan is too shy toexpress his desires and, instead, takes on a female persona (voiced by an unseenactress) who seduces Rodeo into phone sex. When Rodeo expresses an interest inhanging out with Logan their relationship becomes even more complicated.

Strangely rooted in pop culture of the past – Logan resembles a long-lost Culkinbrother and Rodeo recalls a low-rent Jordan Catalano – WILD TIGERS carries adeliberate timelessness about it. The performances, while uniformly excellent, arecasual and laid-back. There is some drama – theoretically the community isthreatened by wandering mountain lions – but in general this is a surreally elegiacfilm with Logan’s thoughts brought to vibrant life in intermittent, incongruous butgorgeous shots. The film perfectly captures the almost mystical nature of teenageisolation in scenes such as when Logan stares in silence at a school dance andsuddenly finds himself the object of violence. Archer highlights the occasionallyabsurd and empty gestures that figures of authority are prone to but doesn’t dis-count them entirely as so many teen films tend to do. There are adult figures ofstrength for Logan including his complicated, young mother and the surprisinglysavvy guidance counselor. With echoes of impressionistic beauty that bring tomind Van Sandt’s recent art films (especially Elephant) and a confessional tonethat is a direct descendant of Tarnation, WILD TIGERS is a refreshingly challeng-ing entry into the world of gay art film.

“These astonishing artists, working in an unlikely form, awakenour senses. They combine a demiurgic, Caligari-like masteryover their creations with the gentle dream archaeology of JosephCornell: their puppets look less like things invented than likethings discovered.” – Terrence Rafferty, The New Yorker

(The two programs may be viewed individually or as a doublefeature. There will be a 20 minute intermission between the twoparts. The complete program is approximately 165 minutes long)

Tuesday, March 13INSTITUTE BENJAMENTAat 8:00, 10:00(1995) dirs Stephen Quay, Timothy Quay w/Mark Rylance, AliceKrige, Gottfried John, Daniel Smith [104 min]The Quays first feature film (and their first film with extensive useof human performers) tells of an enigmatic institute where domes-tic service courses are taught. A young man named Jakob(Rylance) is our vehicle for entry into this strange world, run by aneccentric brother/sister team, where the classes seem arbitrary andbizarre. The Quays use their meditative style to great effect in creat-ing an idiosyncratic atmosphere where anything seems possible.

“INSTITUTE BENJAMENTA is a triumph of the surreal, a master-work of fantasy, and a breathtakingly tenebrous walk off thebeaten path and into the dark, pulsing forest of dreams.” – TheAustin Chronicle

Wednesday, March 14THE PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKESat 5:30, 7:30, 9:30(2005) dirs Stephen Quay, Timothy Quay w/Amira Casar, CesarSaracho, Gottfried John, Assumpta Serna [99 min]THE PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES tells the story of a nefari-ous doctor who abducts an opera singer and takes her to his mys-terious island where he keeps her as a bird in a gilded cage andschemes to make her his for eternity. When an innocent pianotuner, Don Felisberto Fernandez, is invited to the island to preparefor a performance and tend to the doctor’s strange mechanicaltableau, he finds himself strangely drawn to the opera singer.Saying that Don Felisberto ‘finds more than he bargained for’seems trite in the face of the Quays’ unrivaled capacity for creatingscenes of astonishing beauty and remarkable complexity.

“Nothing short of a masterpiece.” – The Los Angeles Times

HOT FUZZTIVALFriday, March 16 & Saturday, March 17THE FRENCH CONNECTIONat 7:15 (+ Sat at 2:30)(1971) dir William Friedkin w/Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider,Fernando Rey, Tony Lo Bianco [104 min]Simply one of the best flat-out police thrillers of all time. THEFRENCH CONNECTION was shot on location in the mean streetsof 70s New York City as it follows the efforts of an elite team ofpolice lead by “Popeye” Doyle (Hackman) to take out an interna-tional drug smuggling ring. It almost goes without saying that thehighlight of the film (and one of the highlights of all cop films) isthe over-the-top chase between Doyle in a car on the streets ofBrooklyn and his prey in an elevated train above.

DIRTY HARRYat 5:00, 9:30(1971) dir Don Siegel w/Clint Eastwood, Harry Guardino, ReniSantoni, John Vernon [102 min]“Are you feelin’ lucky, punk?” Before he turned into a cartoon-ishaction hero in the 80s, Clint Eastwood’s indelible “Dirty” HarryCallahan character was a cop over the edge in a San Franciscooverridden with crime. Faced with the prospect of a crazed rooftopsniper released on a technicality and threatening to kill even moreof the city’s residents, Callahan sets out to take him out – by anymeans necessary.

Sunday, March 18LETHAL WEAPONat 3:30, 7:45, 10:00(1987) dir Richard Donner w/Mel Gibson, Danny Glover [110 min]The epitome of 80s cop-buddy movies (and there are so many tochoose from!), LETHAL WEAPON features a young and hunky MelGibson as an out-of-control cop with a death wish whose superi-ors saddle him with older, crustier Danny Glover in the hope that itwill tone him down. The sharp, inspired script by Shane Black andthe obvious chemistry between Gibson and Glover make this anexceptionally entertaining film.

Monday, March 19 & Tuesday, March 20HARD BOILEDMon at 5:00, 7:30, 10:00; Tue at 5:30 only(1992) dir John Woo w/Yun-Fat Chow, Tony Leung Chiu Wai,Teresa Mo, Philip Chan [126 min]“Hard to beat. To this day, and by some measure, HARD BOILEDremains the benchmark for relentless, thrilling, visceral action. Stillthe most action packed 2 hours of celluloid in cinematic history.John Woo hits a delirious high in his Cantonese career with a fist-ful of amazing set pieces that put other directors whole careers toshame. From the white-knuckle teahouse opener to the relentlesshospital closer, the film has more showstoppers than an MGMmusical.” – HOT FUZZ director Edgar Wright

Wednesday, March 21THE SUPER COPSat 5:30, 7:30, 9:30(1974) dir Gordon Parks w/Ron Leibman, David Selby [90 min]“Little seen and hugely underrated, this serio-comic crime caperwas Gordon Parks' follow up his two hugely successful Shaftfilms. Based on the true life exploits of NYPD officers DavidGreenberg and Robert Hantz, dubbed ‘Batman and Robin’ byreporters, the film falls somewhere between the corruption scan-dal of Serpico and the absurdist humour of Catch 22.

[The film] features a hilarious performance by Ron Leibman; a fan-tastic actor who something of a minor cult icon thanks to parts inthis, The Hot Rock, Slaughterhouse Five and more recently GardenState. If you've only seen Leibman as Rachel's Dad in “Friends,”then catch him cleaning up Manhattan and kicking a whole lot ofass. The cult of Ron Leibman starts here!” – Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright and SimonPegg in Person!HOT FUZZ

at 5:30pm(2007) dir Edgar Wrightw/Simon Pegg, NickFrost, Bill Bailey, TimBarlow, Steve Coogan[120 min]Simon Pegg, Nick Frostand director Edgar Wright– the makers of Shaun ofthe Dead – are backtogether for a fabulously

funny and fast-paced action-comedy. Pegg plays Nicholas Angel, atop London cop who’s so good that he makes his fellow officerslook bad. Banished to a sleepy, seemingly crime-free village Angelsoon finds himself up to his badge in bodies, though he has a hardtime convincing his new colleagues that they’re dealing withmurder. The style of a Hollywood action-thriller is crossed with thesensibility of the team’s enduringly popular TV series Spaced, cre-ating a sharp, surprising and endlessly entertaining comedy. –notes from the ICA, LondonPlease note that although this screening is free you must obtain apass by attending a screening during the Hot Fuzztival .

Monday, March 26ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUEat 5:00, 7:30, 10:00(1973) dir James William Guercio w/Robert Blake, Billy GreenBush, Mitch Ryan, Jeannine Riley [114 min]“Ex-music producer and rock manager's James William Guercio'sone and only directorial credit is a gem among cop films; one thatboth sits proudly in the idiosyncratic golden period of 70's cinemaand marks a bittersweet counterpoint to Easy Rider.

Diminutive Robert Blake's ‘Big John’ Wintergreen is dwarfed byhis colleagues and the surrounding Monument Valley; thequintessential small cop in the Big Country. His motorcycle trafficcop has lofty ambitions, but a promotion to Homicide and thechance to crack a mysterious murder isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Beautifully shot by the late Conrad Hall, this is a funny, heartbreak-ing and sometimes brutal film. Its classic final shot is one tobehold.” – Edgar Wright

Tuesday, March 27BULLITTat 5:00, 7:30, 10:00(1968) dir Peter Yates w/Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn,Jacqueline Bisset, Don Gordon, Robert Duvall [113 min]The quintessential ‘cool cop’ flick, BULLITT features McQueen atthe height of his game as Frank Bullitt, a tough San Francisco copwho is handpicked to protect a witness. The witness winds up shotand Bullitt becomes determined to catch the people responsible –including a leak within the department! A true classic of cool.

Wednesday, March 28DEAD AND BURIEDat 8:00(1981) dir Gary Sherman w/James Farentino, Melody Anderson,Jack Albertson, Robert Englund [92 min]So often in horror films, the authorities are painted as helpless inthe face of something that doesn’t fit into their definition of realityand an outsider must save the day. In this rarely screened cult film, however, it’s a small town sheriff must rise to the challenge whenhis Rhode Island hamlet is overrun by the walking dead. He teamsup with the local mortician – thus forming one of the oddest ofoddball duos – to uncover the source of the strange happenings.

THE HIDDENat 10:00(1987) dir Jack Sholder w/Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Nouri,Claudia Christian, Clarence Felder [96 min]Another oddball duo, but this time, one half of the team(MacLachlan) is an FBI agent possessed by an alien sent to Earthto track down a psychotic, body-skipping entity. A police detective(Nouri) is assigned to aid the agent and together they follow thetrail of death and destruction that the entity leaves behind.Beginning with a spectacular car chase, THE HIDDEN is a thrill ridefrom beginning to end.

Don’t dis-miss this film if you’ve already seen Scorsese’s film though, theoriginal is as sleek and well-acted as the American version withAndy Lau as the hunky mobster posing as a cop and Tony Leungas the brooding cop posing as a mobster. The set-pieces arethrilling and intricately put together as the two play out a doomedgame of cat-and-mouse.

LABYRINTHat 9:30 (Please see above for description.)[For adult fans or families with children ages 11 and up]

Tuesday, April 3MIRRORMASKat 5:00, 7:15, 9:30(2005) dir Dave McKean w/Stephanie Leonidas, Gina McKee, RobBrydon, Stephen Fry [101 min]Like the other beloved allegorical children’s stories such as Alice inWonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and LABYRINTH, MIRRORMASK ismore like a hallucination of fantasy and fear than a story. And whobetter to bring this tale to the screen than fantasy author NeilGaiman, illustrator Dave McKean, and the Jim Henson Company? This beautifully realized film centers on a 15-year-old girl whosehome life is more than a little odd but, when she finds herself atthe center of a quest to save a fantasy kingdom, she begins towish for a return to her own reality. [For adult fans or familieswith children ages 11 and up]

PERSPECTIVES ON WWIIThursday, April 5THE GOOD GERMANat 7:00(2006) dir Steven Soderbergh w/George Clooney, Toby Maguire,Cate Blanchett [105 min]Soderbergh continues his cinematic experimentation with this lush, black and white neo-noir set just after WWII during the Allied occu-pation of Berlin. Shot exclusively with film technology available inthe 1940s, Soderbergh crafts a typically 40s story of love andbetrayal in the ruins of Berlin but infuses it with a very contempo-rary sensibility. Definitely a film to be seen on the big screen.

A FOREIGN AFFAIRat 4:30, 9:15(1948) dir Billy Wilder w/Jean Arthur, Marlene Dietrich, JohnLund [122 min]Billy Wilder returned to his home city of Berlin to shoot this post-war story about a US congresswoman (Arthur) sent to Germany tolook into the conditions of the US occupiers. While there, sheenlists army Captain Pringle (Lund) to investigate a lounge singer(Dietrich) who, rumor has it, is a kept woman of a US officer –unaware that Pringle is the officer in question. Lightly told but withthe bite of irony, A FOREIGN AFFAIR remains both a terrificromantic comedy and a fascinating document of post-war Berlin.

Friday, April 6 & Saturday, April 7FLAGS OF OUR FATHERSat 7:00 (+ Sat at 1:30)(2006) dir Clint Eastwood w/Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford,Adam Beach, John Benjamin Hickey, Barry Pepper, Jamie Bell,Paul Walker, Robert Patrick, Neal McDonough [132 min]Talk about perspective! Clint Eastwood turned in two films lastyear that mirror each other across one of the deciding battles ofWWII. In FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, Eastwood explores the storybehind one of the iconic images of the war – the raising of theAmerican flag at the battleground of Iwo Jima. Early on in a battlethat was to take many hundred lives on both sides, 6 soldiers erectthe flag and become symbolic heroes of the war.

LETTERS FROM IWO JIMAat 4:00, 9:30(2006) dir Clint Eastwood w/Ken Wantanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya,Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryo Kase [142 min]Lauded as one of Eastwood’s best films as a director, LETTERSFROM IWO JIMA bravely takes the point of view of the Japanesearmy as they face the all-out onslaught of the American forcesduring the battle for Iwo Jima. Told primarily from the perspectiveof the commanding officer, General Kuribayashi (Watanabe), andof a lowly cook (Ninomiya), LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA gives aview of WWII rarely seen by American audiences.

Sunday, April 8THE DIRTY DOZENat 2:00, 5:00, 8:00(1967) dir Robert Aldrich w/Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, CharlesBronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Richard Jaeckel, GeorgeKennedy, Trini Lopez, Robert Ryan, Telly Savalas, DonaldSutherland [145 min]By the 1960s, Hollywood had clearly come to terms with the after-math of WWII to the extent that they felt it was time to make somegood, old-fashioned action-adventure movies out of the subjectand THE DIRTY DOZEN is one of the best. Prototypically tough-as-nails Major Reisman (Marvin) is put in charge of a dozen men whoare deemed expendable by the top brass – in fact they are allaccused of crimes that will either win them the death penalty orlife in prison – and is instructed to ready them for a suicide mis-sion against a chateau packed with top ranking Nazis.

Monday, April 9THE LADY VANISHESat 8:00, 10:00(1938) dir Alfred Hitchcock w/Margaret Lockwood, MichaelRedgrave, Paul Lukas, Dame May Whitty [97 min]Hitchcock made several films that flirted with issues raised byWorld War II, not the least of which being this terrific pre-warcomedy-thriller. A mismatched British couple on a train trying tomake it through an unnamed Eastern European country (a thinlyveiled Nazi Germany) try to unravel the fate of a sweet old womanwho has mysteriously vanished mid-trip. Some extremely wittywriting and the undeniable chemistry between the leads aidHitchcock in creating this indelible romantic comedy.

Tuesday, April 10ALL THROUGH THE NIGHTat 5:00, 8:00(1942) dir Vincent Sherman w/Humphrey Bogart, Conrad Veidt,Kaaren Verne, Jane Darwell, Peter Lorre, Jackie Gleason, PhilSilvers [107 min]It’s no secret that Hollywood was quickly enlisted into the wareffort by pumping out propaganda films that would keep theAmerican public engaged in the conflict. ALL THROUGH THENIGHT is one of the quirkier entries in this group of films. Onlymonths after donning his signature trenchcoat in Casablanca,Humphrey Bogart was drafted into this somewhat daffy film abouta gangster fighting Nazi saboteurs in Manhattan after he discoversthey are responsible for the death of his favorite cheesecake baker.

Plays with a short program of WWII propaganda cartoons fromthe Brattle archive. [approx 30 min]

Wednesday, April 11TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGHat 7:00(1949) dir Henry King w/Gregory Peck, Hugh Marlowe, GaryMerrill, Millard Mitchell [132 min]Among the more intense dramas based during WWII, TWELVEO’CLOCK HIGH tells the story of a squad of pilots low on moraleafter suffering many losses in the skies over Germany. EnterGeneral Frank Savage (Peck), a no-nonsense officer who ischarged with making the unit once again combat ready. Whilereal-life newsreel footage is spliced in for the air combat scenes, itis the human story that drives this classic film forward. With a par-ticularly intense performance by Peck, this film balances real emo-tion and the message of maintaining determination in the face ofgreat loss – as the world was trying to do post-War.

STALAG 17at 4:30, 9:30(1953) dir Billy Wilder w/William Hoden, Don Taylor, OttoPreminger, Robert Strauss, Peter Graves [120 min]Another “men-under-stress” picture, this one from a differentviewpoint, as it presents us with an almost film noir tale about thepracticality of surviving in a German POW camp. Featuring Holdenas a deal-making US prisoner who is accused by his fellowAmericans of being a spy for the German guards. In order to provehis innocence, and protect the life of an American saboteur, hemust root out the real spy before time runs out.
