championship trophy eight of the last ten years. Each team has won four national crowns – UW in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011 and Minnesota in 2004, 2005, 2012 and 2013. Minnesota has had the better of the “Border Battle” recently. The Golden Gophers are the two-time national champions and are in the midst of a NCAA-record 51-game winning streak, which includes a pair of season-opening victories at Colgate last weekend. The Gophers are 35-26-8 all-time against the Badgers and have won the last six meetings between the two teams with Wisconsin’s last win against Minnesota coming on October 14, 2011 at the Kohl Center in Madison. The Golden Gophers beat the Badgers in the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four Final in Duluth, Minn. Since 2005, Wisconsin has played Minnesota in two national championship games (2006, 2012) and five WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF championships (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011). Wisconsin enters the early season showdown 2-0-0 and with six points, after beating Minnesota State, 3-0 and 5-1, in the WCHA season-opening series in Madison on October 4-5. Alex Rigsby, a second team All-American, stopped 25 shots and collected her 24th career shutout on opening night. She now has 85 career victories and needs seven to pass former Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner Jessie Vetter on the UW all-time wins’ list for goaltenders. The Badgers are now 58-1-3 all-time against the Mavericks. The Wisconsin-Minnesota series is one of three league series being contested this weekend. St. Cloud State visits Ohio State and the OSU Ice Rink Friday evening at 7:07 pm ET and Satur-day afternoon at 4:07 pm ET in the first of 28 leagues games for those teams while North Dakota hosts Minnesota Duluth at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Saturday at 2:07 pm CT and Sunday at 2:07 pm CT. Bemidji State plays its first WCHA series October 25-26 at home against Minnesota. Bemidji State (1-0-1), which was idle last weekend, plays its home-opening series against Robert Morris of College Hockey America while Minnesota State (1-3-0, 0-2-0-0 WCHA) also plays outside the conference, traveling to Lindenwood – also of College Hockey America. Face-offs at Sanford Center in Bemidji are 7:07 pm CT on Friday night and 4:07 pm CT on Saturday while puck drops at Lindenwood for the MSU Mavericks are 7:00

pm CT for game one and 2:00 pm CT for game two. The WCHA has flexed its collective muscles in the early going of the season, going 9-2-2 in non-conference games, a sparkling .769 percentage and outscoring opponents by 29 goals. That mark has not gone unnoticed as there are five WCHA teams ranked nationally in the top ten this week in the USCHO.com Div. 1 Women’s College Hockey Poll issued October 7. Minnesota, the two-time national champions, is a unanimous No. 1, Wisconsin is tied at No. 4, North Dakota is at No. 6, Minnesota Duluth is No. 9 and Ohio State is No. 10. In this week’s (October 8) USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Div. 1 Women’s Poll, Minnesota is No. 1, Wisconsin is No. 5, North Dakota is No. 6 and Minnesota Duluth is No. 9. Also receiv-ing votes was Ohio State. In non-conference play last weekend, host Minnesota Duluth (2-0-0) blanked Connecticut 7-0 on opening night at AMSOIL Arena last Friday and then won 6-1 in game two on Saturday. Rookies Ashleigh Brykaliuk and Lara Stadler both led the Bulldogs with four points each (1g, 3a). Head coach Shannon Miller became only the third NCAA Division 1 women's hockey head coach to earn 350 wins in UMD’s triumph Saturday night. Miller accomplished the feat in 15 seasons (the second fastest ever) and has an overall record of 350-117-39. Minnesota (2-0-0) kept its NCAA-record winning streak alive. The Gophers went on the road and defeated Colgate, 3-1 and 8-3, led by junior Rachael Bona’s seven points (4g, 3a) in the series. Sophomore Hannah Brandt added six points on one goal and five assists, and sophomore Maryanne Menefee had four points (2g, 2a). Sophomore goaltender Amanda Leveille combined for 45 saves in the two games, stopping 21 shots last Friday and 24 shots on Saturday. North Dakota (2-0-0) beat Lindenwood 5-1 and 6-1 in Grand Forks on October 4-5 as 16 different players chipped in with at least a point. Junior forward Josefine Jakobsen and freshman forward Susanna Tapani led the offense with six points each on the weekend. Jakobsen recorded two goals and four assists, while Tapani had one goal and five assists. North Dakota kept goaltender Nicole Hensley of Lindenwood on her toes as she made 46 and 69 saves in playing both games of the series. St. Cloud State (0-1-1) opened the newly-renovated Herb Brooks National Hockey Center last Friday by playing a 0-0 scoreless tie with visiting Quinnipiac as goalie Julie Friend made 39 saves. Quinnipac scored three goals in the final 12 minutes to take a 3-1 victory in the series finale last Saturday. And in a single non-conference game on October 5, Ohio State

2013-14 WCHA Head Coaches’ Preseason PollIt’s never a bad choice to pick a team that has won 49 games in a row. That is the message from the hockey coaches who have seen their league win the last 14 Division 1 women’s national championships. The University of Minnesota has swept to the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four title in each of the last two seasons and, according to a preseason poll of the league’s head coaches, the Golden Gophers are the pick to win the Western Collegiate Hockey Association title again in 2013-14. The Gophers, who also won the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF playoff championship the last two seasons and are the defending WCHA regular season champions, collected seven first place votes and 49 points in the poll of the league’s eight head coaches. Last season Minnesota outscored their opponents 216 to 36 and became the first women’s hockey team to ever post an unbeaten season, going 41-0-0. They have 49 straight victories dating back to a 2-1 (ot) loss to North Dakota on Feb. 17, 2012. Wisconsin placed second in the coaches poll with 42 points and one first place vote and North Dakota, another NCAA tournament qualifier last season, finished in third place in the poll with 36 votes. Ohio State, with 31 points, was selected to finish fourth, followed by Minnesota Duluth in fifth place and Minnesota State in sixth. Bemidji State and St. Cloud State tied for seventh place. Minnesota sophomore forward Hannah Brandt, an All-WCHA First Team performer last season, was the coaches’ pre-season choice for WCHA Player of the Year. She had five votes, while Wisconsin goaltender Alex Rigsby, the league’s goaltending champion in 2011-12, received three votes. Minnesota freshman forward Dani Cameranesi is the head coaches’ choice as pre-sea-son WCHA Rookie of the Year, edging out Wisconsin forward Sarah Nurse in the balloting.
