Early Registration Transfer ProjectStatus Update
Outline
• Goals/Issues• Activities
– ASN– IPv4
• Timeline
Goals
• Transfer whois data to appropriate RIR• Improve member services
– No loss of data– Preserve information– ‘Regionalize’ presentation of data– Improve processes, protection
• RIR goal– Shared Reverse DNS processes for Ipv4
Issues
• Data accuracy– Out of date point of contact information– Some data superseded by newer RIR
information– Missing email/phone information
• Mostly manual process– Formletters, Procedures – Data conversion incurs manual overhead
(checking)
Activities
1 Document technical procedures (done)• Joint-RIR-mtg Toronto Nanog, June
2 Identify resources for transfer• ASN (done)
• Ipv4 (done)
3 Select /8 blocks for initial deployment• In progress (ARIN, APNIC)
4 Perform transfer /8 at a time● In planning
5 Structure project● Sanjaya is APNIC contact
ASN Activities
• ASN identified– 100 objects, people
• Letters to ASN holder sent• Whois objects created
– Hm/tech joint activity– Manual processes
• Exposed some issues– Maintainer format– Handover of 'ownership'
IPv4 Activities
• Initial list of target /8– Iniitially 2 entire /8 move to APNIC– (some JP /8 remain with ARIN, DNS
for /8 still requires ARIN to manage in-addr)
• Need to select first /8 and subsequent order for partial zone transfers– Number of discrete allocations in /8 will
influence order
IPv4 Activities cont
• Better person/maintainer procedures– Simpler name/nic-hdl generation process– Identify problems for manual processing
• Improve member & community communications
• DNS implications– Domain object creation– ‘preserve current DNS state’
IPv4 issues cont #2
• Documentation review• Update website(s) with list of networks
being moved & dates• Bed in shared DNS processes
– Work in progress
Timeline
• JuneERX project spec Toronto• Aug ASN relocation
–Precursor project: APNIC DNS procedures cutover to whois v3
–Aug 20 whois v3 deployment
–Identify initial /8, list of /8
–Update website
• 4 Q 2002–First /8 move planned
