The words in red are not in the NIV, NASB, ESV, and most other modern translations.

The real issue isn't just how accurate a translation is,but what underlying text isactually being translated!

1. Obtain valid transcriptions of manuscripts of the New Testament.

2. Select the correct variant readings to produce an eclectic text.

3. Parse the text into sentences since there were no spaces, punctuation, or capitalization.

4. Ascertain the meanings of the words of KoineGreek which is a dead language.

5. Translate the text into English.

Which is the right Greek text?

There are thousands of variant readings among the thousands of copies of the New Testament• Most of them are minor differences that do not affect translation (spelling, word order, definite articles, etc.)

• Only a handful are of any theological significanceHow do you determine which variant readings represent the original autographs?• No single text has been handed down from the beginning

• No text comes labelled as being the correct one

Textual Criticism – the science of studying variants in copies of manuscripts in order to reconstruct the contents of the original text as accurately as possible.

Methods of Textual CriticismCopy‐text – choose one particular text and make edits based off of that text• Byzantine Priority HypothesisStemmatics – try to trace the lineage of the texts being copied based on their differences• Coherence‐Based Genealogical MethodEclecticism – make decisions on a word by word basis• Conjectural Emendation

How to do Textual Criticism Right1. First collect all the raw data (papyri, parchment, 

ostraca, inscriptions, quotations, etc.)2.

Wait...no one had ever done step 1 yet!

Everyone has been doing textual criticism with incomplete information!No theory of textual criticism will produce correct results with incomplete information!

Why end at 400 AD?The “early Christian” era is generally accepted to be the time from Jesus Christ’s ascension around 30 AD up through the Council of Nicea in 325 AD.“...at the beginning of the fourth century scholars at Alexandria and elsewhere took as many good manuscripts as were available and applied their philological methods to compile a new uniform text (this was the view of our fathers, and is still that of many textual critics today as well).” – Kurt Aland“When, however, in the fourth century Christianity received official sanction from the State, it became more usual for commercial book manufacturers, or scriptoria, to produce copies of the books of the New Testament.” – Bruce Metzger By the end of 400 AD, there is a noticeable change where many Greek manuscripts had truly become eclectic texts, simply borrowing between different variant readings among the available manuscripts.
