A strategic roadmap for
our children to Thrive by 5
Why Invest Early?
Third grade reading proficiency and kindergarten readiness have become key benchmarks for assessing a child’s abilities to be successful in the early grades and do well in 4th grade and beyond.
Approximately 1 in 3 children arrive at kindergarten without the basic skills needed for success.
Early language and development lags have been documented as early as 18 months and by age two, low-income children are already behind their peers in listening, counting and other skills essential to literacy.
Miami-Dade has a higher prevalence of young children with special health care needs than
the state or nation“Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are those who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional condition and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally.” McPherson, Arango, Fox, et al., 1998
