Sym posium Descr ipt ionAFPPANP's Early Disease Detection and Disease Prevention in Primary Care Symposium will span 5 days and provide instruction in multiple practice areas. The Symposium will offer a wide array of topics to help your better evaluate, treat, and manage patients in your practice. Acquire best practices on relevant clinical topics, including obesity and diabetic management, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, concussions, PCOS, hormone therapy, opioid use and more.

Upon conclusion of this program participants should be able to:

- Apply the most current treatment strategies to common chronic medical conditions provided in recent clinical guideline updates

- Recognize effective interventions leading to reduction of adverse effects of existing chronic conditions and prevention of additional comorbidities

- Employ practice relevant new research in their everyday patient encounters to improve mortality and morbidity of common chronic medical conditions

- Recognize when to refer to or consult with other specialists to provide optimal patient care

Program Facult yLuis Ber r ios, DNP, MHA, ANP, PMHNPDr. Luis Berrios is a board-certified nurse practitioner in both Adult Primary Care and Psychiatry/Mental Health and provides comprehensive medical and psychiatric care to complex adolescent and adult patients.

Rober t Blum m , MA, PA-C, DFAAPAMr. Bob Blumm received his early training as a combat medic in Vietnam. He has been a practicing PA for 40 years. Bob is a Distinguished Fellow of the AAPA and a member of AFPPA, AASPA, APSPA, AAPA, NYSSPA, and the PAs for Tomorrow, where he was Vice President. Bob has authored, co-authored and edited multiple textbooks including Surgery for the Physician Assistant. Bob has authored in excess of three hundred articles, is a national conference speaker for PAs and NPs as well as

physicians and is on the Editorial Board of Advance for NPs and PAs and is Chairman of the PA Advisory Board for Clinician1.com. Bob has worked with a plastic surgeon in Roslyn Heights, NY, for the past 44 years.

Blaine P. Carm ichael, RN, MPAS, PA-C, DFAAPA, Founder of AFPPANPMr. Blaine P. Carmichael, PA-C, is a 1976 graduate of the University of Nebraska Physician Assistant Program. He holds a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (Occupational Medicine), Bachelor of Science, Medicine and Associate in Applied Science, Nursing degrees. His extensive clinical experience includes all aspects of Primary Care as well as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Anesthesia and Pain Management, Occupational and Emergency Medicine. He has held many professional PA organizational elective and appointed offices and has published myriad clinical and medical ethics articles during his career. Blaine is Senior PA of the BHS Physicians Network, and on staff of the Nix Hospital, Baptist Hospital System and the Department of Family Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Texas.

Randy Danielsen, MPAS, PhD, PA-CDr. Danielsen is Dean and emeritus professor of the Arizona School of Health Sciences, A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona. Since graduating from the University of Utah PA Program in 1974, Dr. Danielsen has distinguished himself as a clinician, educator, author and editor. He received his B.S. in Health Science from the University of Utah in 1978, his Masters in PA Studies from the Univeristy of Nebrashka with an emphasis on Internal Medicine in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences from the Union Institute & University in 2003 with an emphasis on Medical Education. Dr. Danielsen has published over sixteen peer-reviewed articles, twenty-three journal editorials, thee book chapters and his first co-authored book, entitled The Preceptor's Handbook for Supervising Physician Assistants.

Program Facult yMat t hew Edwards, JDMatthew M. "Matt" Edwards is a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio and the University of Texas School of Law (1998). He practiced law in Arizona for several years before being admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 2001 and moving to Texas in 2002. Since 2003, the near entirety of his lit igation practice has been in the defense of physicians, hospitals, health care practitioners, and other professionals who have been the targets of lawsuits. In 2013 he was named one of San Antonio's Best Lawyers in S. A. Scene magazine. Matt is married with three children.

Mary Jo Elam , EMPA, MPAS, PA-CMary Jo is a graduate of Univ of Nebraska Med Center 's PA program and has been working full t ime locum tenens for more than 7 years. She travels to work in 9 states (so far!) and has also been privileged to do some disaster relief, particularly following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, as well as volunteer at the local Free Clinic. She is a retired police sergeant, mom of two beautiful adult daughters who have "flown the coop" enabling her to freely pursue her medical career. She and her very supportive husband Doug live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Char les Frost , DHSc, MPAS, PA-C, DFAAPADr. Frost is a graduate of the Air Force PA program, Sheppard AFB Texas, 1981. He holds a BS from the University of Oklahoma, Masters from the University of Nebraska, and Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. Retired from the USAF in 1998 as Chairman of the Orthopedic Element and Deputy Commander of Surgical Services. Numerous awards and decorations, including US Air Force in Europe PA of the Year, and Air Training Command PA of the year. Dr. Frost completed an Orthopedic Fellowship in 1987. From 2002 until 2013 he practiced at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA, running the outpatient Pediatric Fracture clinic and Outpatient adult trauma, after two years in a local spine practice. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School MPA Program, and sees Pediatric Fracture one day per week as a Red Cross Volunteer. He is also a content editor for the JBJS/ Journal of Orthopedics for PAs.

Jordan Garner -Rober t s, PA-CJordan is a neurosurgery PA at Presence Saint Joseph Neuroscience Institute in Joliet, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. He has been involved in neuroscience and traumatic brain injury research since the beginning of his career and is a frequent author and speaker on this and other topics.

Program Facult yMichael Halasy, PA-C, DHScDr. Halasy is a PA in clinical practice in the Spine Center at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is an accomplished clinician and researcher. He currently sits as the Co-Chair of the Multidisciplinary Spine Care Research Committee, in addition to sitting on the Executive Committee of the Midwest Spine Care Committee. He has an interest in patient-reported outcomes, shared decision making, and audit and feedback research. He was one of only 5 US researchers invited to the first International Audit and Feedback Collaborative. In addition to being a PA, Dr. Halasy holds a Masters in Sports Medicine and a Doctor of Health Sciences degree in Organizational Science. He has been in practice for 17 years.

Jacqi Kernaghan, PA-CJacqi Kernaghan is the Associate Director of the Osteoporosis Center of Delaware County and she is the lead PA there which is the first of its kind in the Philadelphia area. She started the Fracture Intervention Service in the Crozer-Keystone Health System along with Dr. Barry Jacobson and covers four hospitals, as well as seeing and coordinating care for all outpatient consults at seven satellite offices. Prior to joining the Osteoporosis Center, she worked in primary care for seven years where she held many administrative roles. Jacqi graduated summa cum laude from Philadelphia University with her Bachelor?s and Master?s degrees. She is active in the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Kennet h Korber , PA, ASH-CHC, DFAAPAKen Korber is a PA, clinically trained in cardiology and vascular surgery. He is a certified Hypertension Clinical Specialist and was inducted as an AAPA Distinguished Fellow in 2016. He is published in the medical & surgical peer-reviewed literature since 1984, holds faculty appointments within several academic medical centers, and speaks on a variety of clinical and patient education topics at national, and international scientific venues. In addition to his clinical activities, Mr. Korber is a published children's book author and is the Chief Learning Officer at the Center for Functional Education & Leadership.

Edward Lopez, DNP, RN, FNP-BC Dr. Lopez has been in practice as a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with an emphasis in Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine since 2010. He received his Bachelors and Masters of Science in Nursing from Texas Tech Health Science Centers in Lubbock, Texas. He received his Doctor of Nursing Practice from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Lopez currently shares a practice with Dr. Premila Johnson, MD in Midland, Texas. He additionally holds a faculty position teaching Management and Leadership at Texas Tech Health Science Centers School

of Nursing in Lubbock, Texas.

Program Facult yRyan Mayle, PA-CRyan is a family practice physician assistant in Westfield, NY. He graduated from Grove City College in 2009 with a Bachelors of Arts in psychology and Spanish and then from DeSales University in 2012 with a Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. In addition to providing a wide range of primary care services, Ryan also has strong interest in providing treatment for substance use disorders.

René McCar t y, PA-CRené has been a PA for more than 30 years and has owned her own clinic in Tyler, Texas for the last 12 years. Her practice has consisted almost exclusively of hormone replacement therapy for women and men. She has multiple certifications from different organizations in hormone replacement therapy and this is her passion in medicine.

H. Reginald McDaniel, MDDr. Reg McDaniel is a graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School & has spent over 30 years practicing anatomical & clinical pathology, including positions as the Director of Pathology & Laboratories and Director of Medical Education at Dallas-Ft Worth Medical Center. In 1996, the American Naturopathic Medical Association recognized Dr. McDaniel's work with the glyconutrient, aloe polymannan, with their annual "Discovery of the Year Award."  Dr. McDaniel was a consultant to Carrington Laboratories for 9 years, Medical Director for Mannatech, Inc. for their first 8 years, and he was the Health Science Consultant to Manna Relief Ministries for 4 years. He has published numerous educational papers on the effects of glyconutritionals in relation to various conditions. Currently, Dr. McDaniel is Director of the Fisher Institute located in Grand Prairie Texas.

Am anda Mil ler , PA-CAmanda Miller is a PA at CentroMed, a Federally Qualified Health Center in San Antonio, TX. Ms. Miller works in HIV treatment and prevention, behavioral health, and family medicine. Before becoming a PA Ms. Miller worked in HIV and STI prevention for over 10 years. She is credentialed as an HIV Specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine. She is a graduate of the University of Texas Health San Antonio Physician Assistant Studies program. Additionally, Ms. Miller has a Master of Public Health and Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. She has served on the committees and commissions with the American Academy of Physician Assistants and American Academy of HIV Medicine. She is a past board member of the Texas Academy of

Physician Assistants and Bexar County PA Society. Her clinical interests include HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, HIV/STI treatment, and transgender healthcare.

Dana Mot ika, PA-CDana Motika began her career in 1985 as an RN, working in Pulmonology, ICU and the ER. With a desire to shift her focus to medicine, in 1996 she obtained a Master?s in PA studies. Being a nurse and a PA has given her an interesting blend of perspectives and approaches to patient care. As a PA she has worked in Family Medicine, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine and currently serves as a Hospitalist. She has served on the faculty of her alma mater, Duquesne University, where she taught PA and NP students and was faculty adviser to the Health Sciences ProfessionalFraternity. Ms. Motika is a Past President of the Association of Family Practice PAs, and a former AAPA Liaison to the American Academy of Family Physicians. In her leisure time she designs art, jewelry pieces, creates handmade greeting cards and enjoys reading, gardening and snuggling her sweet Chihuahua, Lulu.

Tia Oliver i, PA-C Tia completed her Masters of Medical Science degree in PA Studies at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She is a board certified PA with prior experience in emergency, internal medicine and ob/gyn. Tia has found her passion working in women's health. She specifically has an interest in adolescent health, HPV and cervical cancer prevention. Tia is dedicated to developing lasting relationships with her patients while providing an excellent health care experience.

Joan Pet ers-Gilm ar t in, PA-C, MHPMs. Peters-Gilmartin has practiced in Family Medicine in MA for over 20 years. She is a former two-term President of MAPA and served as MAPA continuing education chair for 13 years. She has been an outspoken community educator, and policy change advocate for removing the stigma and shame associated with SUD(Substance Use Disorder and mental health disorders. It is her mission to seek increased access and coverage for evidence- based treatment for SUD and other mental health disorders comparable to other chronic diseases in compliance with the Federal Mental Health Care Parity Act of 2008. She regularly testifies at her State House in Boston and to Congress in Washington DC. She is a board member of The Open Doorway of Cape Cod, Inc. which provides navigator services for those seeking recovery; a participating Organization Member of the national Facing Addiction team, as well as a member of Family Support and Grief Groups.

Scot t Richards, PhD, PA-C, DFAAPADr. Richards graduated from Hahnemann University in 1994. He has devoted his entire career as a family medicine and behavioral medicine/psychiatry PA to working with the underserved. Dr. Richards returned to receive training in Clinical Psychology completing his practicum and internships emphasizing school psychology, psychodynamic therapies, mindfulness cognitive behavioral therapies, and health psychology.

Program Facult yAdam Richins, PA-CMr. Richins attended PA training in Miami, Florida. He has participated in humanitarian aid missions to the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama. Mr. Richins currently serves on the state of Idaho colorectal cancer supervisory team. He is fluent in Spanish and has spent 6 weeks training on the island of St. Croix. Previous presentations include Northwest Primary care association and attendance at the CRC forum with the CDC in Atlanta,GA. He currently works for Family Health Services in southern Idaho.

Lynda Sher land, MSN, APRN, FNPLynda is Family Nurse Practitioner and integrative healthcare provider who is willing to explore a unique, personal definition of health with her patients. She creates safe space for healing by spending time, listening and helping her patients to articulate an intention to live a healthier life. Her passion is food as medicine. She speaks in her community and offers cooking classes that emphasize preparing delicious, nutrient dense, anti inflammatory meals for people seeking the freedom to live their best life. Ms. Sherland is a graduate of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine Fellowship Program created by Dr. Andrew Weil. She is currently practicing at Integrative Family Medicine in San Antonio, TX.

Ker r i Van Arnem , DSc, PA-CDr. Van Arnem received bachelor degrees in Biology and Psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. With a strong desire to serve, she enlisted in the Army in 2002 as a medic. Kerri then attended the Interservice Physician Assistant Program, receiving a Bachelor of Science, a Master of PA Studies from the University of Nebraska, and a commission as an officer in the US Army. After a practicing as a Battalion Physician Assistant, she earned a Doctorate of Science in PA Studies with focus in Emergency Medicine from Baylor University in 2013. Major Van Arnem was selected to attend the Emergency Medicine/Critical Care Point of Care Ultrasound fellowship, where she is currently stationed as an Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant and Ultrasound Fellow at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX.

Tracy Wilson, DNP, MSN.Ed., RN, FNP-BC, CNEDr. Wilson is a doctorally-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner and has worked as a Nurse Practitioner since 2008. She has worked in a Pediatrics, NICU, and Neuro-Spine Med-Surg. In 2016 she earned her DNP at Belmont University. She also possesses a Post-Master FNP certificate, from the University of Kentucky. She graduated from Bellarmine University in 2006, with a Master of Science in Nursing Education. Her BSN was obtained from the University of Louisville in 2001. She is also a Certified Nurse Educator through the National League of Nursing.

Kim Zuber , PA-CKim retired after 30 years of PA practice and now spends her time teaching "all things kidney" with over 80 oral presentations, 40 articles and 2 guest editorships. She graduated from UCSD with a bachelor?s in molecular biology and chemistry, picked up a teaching credential at San Diego State University and taught high school for many years. Deciding that medicine had to be easier than teaching teenagers, Kim attended the St. Louis University PA program. She has been involved in the kidney community for the last 20 years picking up Renal Professional of the Year 2014 for her work. She is an AAPA Distinguished Fellow and was selected as Outstanding PA of the Year in 2014.
