EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION*66-67 SEMESTER HOURS

The Early Care and Education program isdesigned for students who wish to pursue a careerin Early Childhood Education. The AssociateDegree is organized with standards from theNational Association for the Education of YoungChildren (NAEYC). This program is offered inthree separate concentrations: occupational,arts/science, and business.

The Occupational Concentration is designed forthose students planning to teach in an earlychildhood development center, a Headstartprogram, or to work as a teacher’s aide in publicschools. The Arts/Science Concentration isdesigned for those students who plan to transferto a four-year institution and pursue abaccalaureate degree, while the BusinessConcentration is designed for those students whoplan to start their own child development centeras a business. Obtaining the degree will increasethe early childhood teacher’s skills and knowledgeabout caring for infants and preschoolers. Thedegree also will give professionals an edge in theirjobs and will help make them leaders in the field.

This program offers students a basicunderstanding of the needs of young children andthe training to implement quality preschoolprogramming. Students also learn growth anddevelopment principles, teaching methods, safetyand first aid, discipline techniques,developmentally-appropriate curriculummethods, exceptionality and early interventiontechniques for promoting effectivefamily/program partnerships, and principles ofethics and leadership in early care and education.Career-ladder title of graduates for HeadStart andDSS purposes is Early Childhood Lead Teacher.

The associate degree does not lead to teacher certification and is not a part of the transfer block.

Special Admissions Requirements• Meet the specific program requirements outlined for admissions• Complete a physical exam, including T.B. screening and hepatitis vaccines.• Satisfactory police or government record check to indicate no prior child abuse or neglect record.

A grade point average of 2.0 is required tofulfill program requirements for graduation.
