At Haywood Community College:• Students can choose to pursue

an Associate degree with three tracks of study or choose from five certificates.

Associate degree tracks include: Early Childhood Education, Administration, or Special Education.

Certificates include: Early Childhood, Early Childhood Administration, Special Education, Infant/Toddler, or School-Age Education.

• The Early Childhood Education Track is designed to prepare students to work in an Early Childhood Program. The Administration Track prepares

Out of the Ordinary CampusLocated in the scenic mountains of Western North Carolina, the HCC campus provides a unique back-drop for learning. From the picturesque millpond area to the many beautiful gardens, students find that no matter what the season, the campus is a beautiful place to be. The campus is a designated arboretum and attracts many visitors. There is a walking trail which encircles much of the cam-pus and scattered picnic tables for students to enjoy an outdoor meal or to just hang out with friends. The college has two additional sites, the Regional High Technology Center, home of the Golden LEAF Advanced Machining Center, and the West Waynesville Center. The college also has three tracts of forest land that serve as a teaching resource and outdoor laboratories.

• The Special Education Track is designed to prepare students to work in Early Childhood Programs or public school classrooms with a focus on children with special needs.

• All Early Childhood associate degrees and certificates are only available online.

Early childhood teachers should be well trained and educated to be able to provide not only the nurturing needs, but also the sparks to ignite a desire for lifelong learning.

Program options prepare graduates to:• Teach children from birth

through age 8 in diverse learning environments.

• Combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children or school age children under the supervision of qualified teachers.

• Foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emo-tional, and creative develop-ment of young and school-aged children.

• Plan and implement de-velopmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings and school-aged envi-ronments.

• Course work includes child-hood growth/development; computer technology in education; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with families and children.

Employment Opportunities• Graduates may find work

as teachers in child development or child care programs, preschools, before/after-school programs, paraprofessional positions in public/private schools, recreational centers, and other programs that work with child populations.

Haywood Community College’s Early Childhood program graduates knowledgeable professionals who have the essential skills and field experience to effectively educate typically and atypically developing children while supporting diverse families and communities; all the while advocating for the profession.
