Jocelyn Keller finished her fourth season as the head coach of the Earlham College women’s soccer pro-gram. During her first three years, Keller has a 38-19-2 overall record, while earning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award after the Quakers ended the 2010 campaign 14-6-1. Under her leadership, the Quakers have reached their conference tournament championship match the past two seasons in the North Coast Athletic Conference in 2009 and the HCAC in 2010. This past year the Quakers won the HCAC Championship as they finished regular season conference play 8-1.

The 2010 Coach of the Year finished the season just shy of another award. As a finalist in the Inspire Awards, an award given to celebrate the importance of youth mentoring in the work place and the community, Keller fell just short of Toi Baylor, founder of the Baylor Youth Foundation. Baylor was later featured on the ABC series Undercover Millionaire.

After the 2010 season, eight Earlham players received all-conference honors from the HCAC with Karman Duchon being named the Offensive MVP. In addition to Duchon, Joy & Ikumi Doucette would also be named to the All-Region squad to bring her career total to five all-region players in only three seasons.

There were four players with post-season recognition from the NCAC in 2009, including Joy Doucette as Newcomer of the Year, when the Quakers finished fourth in the regular season. In 2008, six Earlham players earned NCAC honors, while Karman Duchon was also recognized as second team all-region.

A Cincinnati native, Keller is a graduate of St. Ursula Academy and played club for Classics Hammer F.C. Keller graduated in 2004 from DePauw University where she made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. As a captain her senior year, she led DePauw to the Final Four, was named MVP and earned all-conference recognition. She also is the career leader in assists at DePauw University.

After graduation Keller served as an assistant coach at Earlham College under Jim Watts. She continued her career at Williams College under Michelyne Pinard, where the Ephs posted an 8-3-3 record. Prior to returning to Earlham, she served as an assistant coach under Neil Cunningham at Washington & Lee University in 2007-08 (16-4). Keller holds a NSCAA National Diploma as well as a goal keeping license.

Keller’s 2011 summer was primarily dedicated to her coaching development as she com-pleted the NSCAA’s two week coaching clinic at the 2011 Women’s World Cup. Upon completion of the curriculum on Special Topics she returned overseas with 365 Sports. This time she would lead a U15 team to Goteburg, Sweden to play in the Gothia Cup, a world wide tournament featuring over 1,500 youth teams.

A member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II staff, Keller also runs camps and clinics at The University of Virginia, The U. S. Naval Academy, Washington & Lee and Earl-ham College in the off season.

Keller currently resides in Richmond, Indiana. Her parents, Jeff & Adele, still live in Cincinnati while her sister Susie is a high school NSCAA All-American and former midfielder at Brown who currently lives in Boston, Mass.

Rebecca O’Shurak enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Earlham women’s soccer program after playing four seasons at Allegheny College.

A goalkeeper for Allegheny women’s soccer team, O’Shurak was a senior as the Gators finished 14-3-4 and earned a bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III National Tournament. She also played four years on Allegheny’s lacrosse squad and was the starting goalie on the team that finished third in the North Coast Athletic Confer-

ence with an overall record of 12-6 in 2011.

O’Shurak coached several summers at the Allegheny Summer Camp and with Con-neaut Lake Youth Soccer League. Since moving to Richmond she has trained the local Richmond High School Men’s Soccer goalkeepers. The recent graduate attended The National Coaching Institute this past summer. O’Shurak will be the primary goalkeeping coach for the Quakers.

The Meadville, Pa. native graduated from Allegheny with a Bachelor of Arts in Com-munication Arts in 2011. During her time at Allegheny, she served as Media/Recruiting Assistant for Women’s Soccer as well as the Athletic Communications Intern and an office assistant for football recruiting.

ewThe Women’s Soccer Team enters their second season in the Heartland Colle-giate Athletic Conference. In their first season with the Heartland the Quakers made a statement winning all but one game in conference play. Their almost perfect conference record (8-1) earned the Quakers the title of HCAC Champi-ons for their breakout season and the op-portunity to host the conference tourna-ment. Falling just short of the National Tournament by one game, the Earlham women were recognized on numerous occasions in the conference and the re-gion.

Karman Duchon, Ikumi Doucette and Joy Doucette were among those named to the All-Region squad. Earlham has lost one of their two All-Region for-wards, Karman Duchon, to graduation. Duchon earned First Team All-Confer-ence status in addition to being selected the conference’s most valuable offensive player. Duchon, a two-time HCAC Play-er of the Week, topped the conference with 41 points last season as she finished a league-leading 17 goals, while ranking third with seven assists. She ended her career as Earlham’s all-time leader with 54 goals, 33 assists and 141 points. In

2010, Duchon had five game-winning goals, currently holding Earlham’s all-time mark of 14.

The All-Region Doucette sisters will re-turn to the Quakers as juniors. Joy, the team’s second leading scorer and leader in assists, will continue to cause prob-lems for the opposing teams’ defenses, while Ikumi’s speed should allow Earl-ham the chance to add to their 12 shut-outs from the previous season.

Eight players received all-conference honors for the 2010 season in addition to Duchon and the Doucette twins. First Team All-Conference back, Cate Simmermaker, and Second Team All-Conference central midfielder, Kelly Sprague, are also returning to the Quaker starting line up. Simmermaker landed third on the team in scoring while Sprague, a returning captain, anchored the midfield.

Returning to the midfield with team cap-tain Kelly Sprague is last year’s starting winger Paige Thomas. Thomas was a constant last year playing in 86 per-cent of the team’s total minutes. The Thomas-Sprague match up is likely to Ikumi Doucette

be a strong component of success for the Quakers in the midfield.

Senior Evelyn Tandy’s versatility will help Keller to fill the few gaps that have opened from last year. Her composure and technical skills on the ball will in-evitably land her in the center of the field but her vision and understanding of the game has left the coaching staff in an ideal predicament as to whether she will play in the midfield or the back line. Holland Rausher’s strong first touch will increase her playing time this year as the Quakers try to make things happen in the midfield.

Despite the loss of Duchon, HCAC Coach of the Year, Jocelyn Keller seems optimistic as she returns four of her five leading scorers from the 2010 season. Keller’s 2011 roster was pleas-antly surprised to welcome back junior Ryder Comstock to the team following a one-year hiatus. The 6 foot forward adds depth and a bit of experience to the already returning squad as the team went undefeated in all of the 13 games in which Comstock stepped on the field.

Comstock will join junior Joy Doucette on the attack.

While things may look increasingly difficult with the loss of seven seniors, including starting goalkeeper Megan Hothaus and centerback Allie Zeller, Senior Kate Franks looks promising as she is expected to step into her new role as the starting Quaker net minder. In addition, three fourths of the back line will be returning with Simmermaker, Doucette and last season’s standout freshman Annie Frodeman at centerback.

The Quakers will open their season against Thomas More. Earlham fell to the Saints 1-0 just a year ago. This game will be the first step of many as the Quakers look to improve upon past years and compete in the conference tournament and potentially clinch a spot in the national tournament.
