Coaches’ Message

Welcome to the Cumberland Valley Water Polo family. As coaches, it is our mission to make CV the best program it can be. This can only be done with the dedication from all of our coaches, athletes and family members.

When a team achieves success, every member of the program achieves success. There are many facets of success as a program, student, athlete and as an individual. This is always our goal and we hope this success carries with our athletes through their lives. We thank you deeply for all the dedication, time and effort you will be putting in to make our program successful. For those of you who are new players to the program, you will find water polo to be a challenging and rewarding experience. Parents, although the game of water polo is confusing at first, it is fast-paced and exciting. You will have the support of veteran parents and make new friends. Again, we welcome you into our family and thank you for all of your support.

Best of luck this season! Coach Corey and Coach Sheri

Budget

Your support is vital to the continued success and growth of our program. Booster Club income is derived from: booster dues, concession stand income, fundraising and hosted tournament income. Your support provides the following: away game meals, banquet expenses for the players, team suit, training equipment purchases, senior recognition, yearbook, tournament fees and two scholarships for seniors. Booster membership dues are $75 per family. You will be invoiced via email for your dues payment.

Dana Mattingly Treasurer

Concessions

A concession stand will be provided at most home polo games and home tournaments throughout the 2017 season. CV parents are responsible for food donations and operation of the concession stand. Since profits from these concessions are a major part of our team’s fund-raising efforts, we need each family’s help to make this a successful endeavor. Parents will also be expected to provide a food donation and volunteer to work at least one shift at the concession stand during home games / tournaments. CV will be hosting the following during the 2017 season: Wilson: September 6th Screamin’ Eagle : September 8th & 9th Muhlenburg: September 11th Reading: September 19th Beast of the East: September 22nd

Governor Mifflin: October 18th (Senior Night)

Please mark these important dates on your calendar. If you are unable to help at any of these tournaments, you are expected to find a substitute to fulfill your commitment and/or trade duties for another date. Thank you in advance for your support!! We also need clock table help at all home games. We can train anyone to help out with this. Look for the open spots on the Time-To-Sign-Up (TTSU) before games. HS Water Polo TTSU

Senior Pictures for the Banquet Video

The seniors “life in pictures” audio visual presentation tradition continues again this year. Letitia Gensbigler, along with a cast of helpers, will be producing the year in pictures and the senior’s picture chronology video this year. Senior parents: please assemble a handful of your favorite pictures of your player from birth to graduation. Pictures may be silly or serious and may include siblings and/or pets. Players in their formative years of athletic endeavors are always entertaining. Please be sure to include a senior picture. Pictures may be given or emailed to project leader Letitia Gensbigler at [email protected].

Understanding the Game of Water Polo

Water polo can be a confusing game for spectators. The whistle is constantly blowing and the play never stops, even when someone is ejected for a penalty. In addition, there are many misconceptions about the game, including how the players keep their horses swimming. Well hang in there, because the following information should help to make the picture much clearer. 1. Each team has 6 field players and a goalie. 2. Field players can only use one hand to touch the ball; the goalie may use two.

3. Varsity games usually consist of 7-minute quarters.

4. The object of the game is to score by placing the ball completely past the goal line. Players

may move the ball by swimming or passing. 5. Teams may substitute after a goal is scored, during a time-out or during the play from the

ejection area. 6. Shots blocked out of bounds by defensive players result in the defensive team receiving

possession. If a defender uses two hands to block a shot, the player receives a 20 second ejection if the infraction is outside of the 5-meter line. If the foul occurs inside the 5-meter line, the offensive team receives a penalty shot.

7. Ejections/ Kick-Outs- this occurs when a player commits a major foul (see description

below). The player is ejected for 20 seconds and must go to the ejection area until the 20 seconds are over. The main causes of an ejection would be a hold, pull back or a sink.

8. Advantage rule- this is arguably the most important rule (and most difficult to understand).

When a player has the ball, they have the advantage to make a play. A foul should not be called as long as they still have the advantage to make a play. An ejection can occur against a defensive player if they commit a major foul if that infraction causes the offensive player to lose their advantage. An official does not necessarily have to call the foul if they think the offensive player still has the advantage to score a goal.

Definitions

Attacking Team The team having control of the ball, trying to score a goal. The team considered as the "offense." In the case of a "free" ball, then it would be the team last having possession of the ball.

Back door Offensive player on the weak side gets behind his defender and open for a quick shot. Ball Under To take or hold the ball underwater when, through body contact, the player in possession is either forced to take the ball underwater or while purposely taking the ball underwater, is contacted by a defender on the shoulder, arm or hand holding the ball. Center Forward/ Hole Set/ 2-M Player/ 2-MO The offensive player directly in front of the goal. It is the equivalent to a center in basketball. Center Back/ Hole Defender/ 2-M Defender/ 2-MD The defensive player assigned to the 2-meter offender. Corner throw/ 2-meter throw Free throw awarded to the attacking team when the ball is deflected over the goal line and out of the playing area by the goalkeeper (but NOT defending field player). An attacker puts the ball in play from the 2 meter mark at the edge of the pool. Counter Attack, Counter When the ball is turned over from one team to the other, the team that is going offense is sprinting up the pool trying to gain an advantage over the defense. Dribbling The technique of moving the ball while swimming forward, propelled ahead of the player with the wake created by alternating armstrokes. Since ball contact is minimal, this creates advantage for the ball carrier advancing the ball; his defender may not make contact unless the attacker is touching the ball. Fast break The team recovering the ball, usually after an unexpected turnover, sprints to the opponent's goal to gain an advantage in numbers or position, and an easy goal. Fouls: When an infraction of the rules occurs, the referee will point in the direction of the team taking possession, while blowing the whistle. The ball is put back into play (free throw) giving the player adequate time to throw the ball to another teammate or to swim it up the pool. An advancing player cannot shoot the ball. The ball is live, and can be defended, once a “water polo move” has been made. A player can shoot a free throw under the following conditions: the ball is not advanced forward from the spot of the foul, the foul occurred outside the 5-meter line, and the shot is made in one motion after contact with the ball is made.

Ordinary (Minor) Foul: Pushing the ball underwater (even if you are forced to do so by a defensive player); Touching the ball with both hands (on offense); Coming into contact with the arm of a player that has the ball; Throwing/pushing the ball out-of-

11

bounds; or Pushing off the pool side, pool bottom, or another player (on offence only). A defender may reach over an opponent’s back to get at the ball while facing away from the goal. A foul will be called is contact with the body is made before contact is made with the ball. The penalty for an ordinary foul is a free throw for the opposing team. Major Foul: When a defender fouls an opponent too aggressively, or from behind when the opponent is facing the goal; Interfering with a free throw; holding an offensive player (with or without the ball); Pushing another player underwater; Swearing; Punching the ball with a fist (on defense). The defender is ejected for 20 seconds (players must reenter the game from the ejection area if their team recovers the ball before the ejection time is up, or if the opposing team scores). Players may only receive 3 major fouls before elimination from the game.

If all of this has you totally confused – just sit back and enjoy the game! And, if you do happen to overhear some terms during the game, here are a few to help you out. Kick-Out/Ejection When a player is ejected from the game (for 20 seconds, a goal is scored or until the defense recovers the ball) for committing a major foul. Outlet pass During the counterattack, the goalkeeper looks to pass to an open teammate downfield who is fast breaking to the goal or setting up the offense. Slough (pronounced sluff) A defensive player drops off of their player in attempt to defend another player (usually the hole set). You will hear coaches yelling this often (and should hear players as well). Strong Side Side of the pool where the ball is (opposite of weak side). Swim-off/sprint At the start of each period, teams line up on their own goal line. At the referee's whistle, both teams swim to midpoint of the field, where the referee drops the ball. The first team to recover the ball begins their offense. Utility player A player skilled at several offensive or defensive roles, often coming off the bench for substitutions. Walk it in The attacker grips the ball in one hand and either eggbeaters or strokes in toward the goal.

Weak side Side of the pool opposite of where the ball is (opposite of strong side). Yellow card Shown by the referee to indicate that a player or coach has been officially cautioned for misconduct, but may continue participating in the game. If a player or coach receives a second yellow card caution, it has the effect of receiving a red card, and the individual must leave the playing area for the rest of the match. Zone Defensive arrangement in which players are assigned to defend an area, rather than a specific opponent.
