A Letter From Our Principal

Dear Eastvalley Family,

Wow! Only 3 ½ weeks left of school this year. Remember the last day for

students is Friday, May 21. We still have a lot of work to accomplish in

these last few weeks and everyone is continuing to work hard to get it done.

Our fifth graders are currently at Jekyll Island getting hands on instruction in

our oceans and animal habitats. Having been on this trip in the past, I can

tell you it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students. They are in

classes from 8 in the morning until after dark. I’m sure they will have a lot to

talk about when they return tomorrow night. I want to thank our current 5th

grade parents for working so hard to raise funds to make it easier for

everyone to afford the trip.

Relay for Life is May 7th at Jim Miller Park beginning with the survivor lap at 7:00 p.m. I invite all of you to come to

the event and celebrate with us. Cancer survivors from our own Eastvalley staff will be walking and we’d love for

everyone to be there to cheer them on! The luminary ceremony, lighting of candles for all those that have battled

cancer, begins at 10:00 p.m. and is my personal favorite of the entire event. It is a time for us to celebrate and

remember those friends and family who have been so courageous in their fight. Please come join us!! Email me if

you would like any more information. Also, if you are a cancer survivor, please go to www.cobbrelay.org and register

to join in the celebration!!

Please consider running for School Council for next year. You will find the application in this edition of the Eagle Eyes.

Please fill it out and return it by April 30 to the front office.

Karen Wacker Principal

Karen Wacker, Principal

Parents Needed for School CouncilAn application for parents to submit to run for the Eastvalley School Council is located on page 11. Please give some consideration to this service to our school. We need 3 parents (2 of whom are also business people) to fill the vacancies for next year. Please fill out the application and return it by April 30 to the Eastvalley office. We will have elections in May. All parents (except those who only have 5th grade students) are eligible for election to School Council. The School Council meets once every 9 weeks to discuss issues of concern to Eastvalley. Please call Ms. Wacker at 770-578-7214 if you have questions.

Principal for the Day

Kyle Dugan, a 3rd grader, spent Thursday, April 1, 2010 as Principal of Eastvalley Elementary. Kyle won the raffle drawing at the Friends and Family lunch and spent the day shadowing Ms. Wacker as she completed her daily duties. Kyle was on morning announcements, visited classrooms, sat in the administrative meeting for the week, checked emails, etc. Kyle said the day was a lot busier than he thought it would be. Kyle even said he might think about being a principal when he grows up! Kyle did a great job and handled everything that came his way very professionally.

Page 4Eastvalley Teams Compete in “Odyssey of the Mind” Tournament

Eastvalley sent four teams to compete in this year’s odyssey of the Mind Tournament. Odyssey of the Mind is a worldwide creative problem-solving competition for primary-school-aged children through college. To compete in the competition, a team of 7 students must work together to solve a “long-term” problem, as defined by the Odyssey of the Mind problem captains, & must also compete in a “spontaneous” problem solving segment.

Each team worked tirelessly to solve their long-term problem in the form of a skit, & spent countless hours practicing for the spontaneous segment of the competition. The Odyssey of the Mind teams began their practicing in September of the school year. The regional tournament was held in March. Eastvalley is

very proud of these 28 students! Many thanks go out to the Coaches and Assistant Coaches for volunteering their time & efforts to guide these children through the process and prepare them for the competition. We would also like to thank the parents of these students for their support and encouragement throughout this seven-month process.

CONGRATULATIONS to our third-grade “Food Court” team, coached by Melissa chalker, and our three fourth-grade teams: “Discovered Treasures”, coached by sue larsen & stephanie Goodly; “Nature Trail’r”, coached by leslie singer and shari sprigle; and “Food Court”, coached by Bonny Block and lisa Favro. The “Nature Trail’r” Team and 4th-grade “Food Court” Team advanced, and also competed in the state finals on April 10 at Columbus State University. We are so proud of these students’ hard work and accomplishments!

One final special thanks to Bonny Block for spearheading this effort at Eastvalley over the past several years. An amazing life experience was afforded these children as a result! Thank you so much! If your child is interested in joining an Eastvalley Odyssey of the Mind Team, please look for more information to come your way as school re-opens in August, or contact any of the coaches named above.

Third Graders are Surprised to receive Personal Dictionaries! The Rotary Club of Marietta and Southern Polytechnic State University have joined together to provide all

Eastvalley third graders with their own dictionary. Our students were surprised with their dictionaries early one

Thursday in March. The students were so excited to receive these personal dictionaries. They could be seen reading

these books in the hallways, at lunch, and even at recess. Dictionary skills are an integral part of the education for

third graders as students increase their vocabulary and explore new words. Many students have reported that they

are using the dictionaries for their homework and

more than once students have been seen using

their dictionaries in the classroom to enhance

their learning. Students and teachers would like

to extend a big “THANK YOU” to the Rotary Club

and Southern Poly Tech for helping students

become excited about learning and giving them

one more tool toward their success.

You may earn your Newbery Award over the course of your time as a student at Eastvalley. When you accomplish this, please print off your EVRC student record and bring it to the Media Center. You will earn a beautiful medal and have your name engraved on a perpetual plaque that will be showcased in the Media Center. To date, we have five students who have earned this award this year. I sure would love to add your name to the list! Happy Reading!
