REWARDS FOR CONSISTENCY From big crops of good-looking horses who sold wellGrand Lodge made himself a household name withthree real stars Sinndar from his second crop winnerof the G1 English and Irish Derbies and the Arc andchampion European three-year-old of 2000 Queen=sLogic from his fourth crop unbeaten in four starts andthe top-rated European two-year-old filly of 2001 andGrandera from his third crop scintillating winner of theG1 Prince of Wales=s S at Royal Ascot as afour-year-old in 2002 By the beginning of 2003Coolmore was standing him for i75000 and probablygenerated something in the neighborhood of i10 mil-lion in stud fees from that season No doubt they couldhave repeated the dose for another year or two hadGrand Lodge not died while in Australia for the 2003Southern Hemisphere covering season This was accomplished in spite of the fact that GrandLodge was never a very consistent sire Even at the endof 2002 boasting three superstars one right after theother his gtABC Index= which is a pretty fair measure ofconsistency was just 113 (meaning about 9 percent ofhis runners achieved a standard of C Runner or better)and even his A Runner Index was just 162 (just over 3percent A Runners)--only about half that of the reallytop sires The message is unmistakable Consistencydoes not sell seasons Household names do Then what are the rewards for consistency Thesemaybe fall more to the racehorse breeder than to thestallion owner and therein lie the opportunities

Some of the sires covered today are well-knownnear-stars some are not But they all have something incommon which is very critical to the racehorse breederConsistency and moreover consistency at producingrunners whose earnings place them in the top 8 percentof earners on the major circuits What we call in APEX terms gtABC Runners= A horsecan be a C Runner by earning just at $50000 in thecalendar year in North America and even as little as16000 in GBIre so we=re not talking about householdnames here But scarily it does put them in the top 8percent of earners from runners Of the 1156 sires who were assigned APEX ratingsat the end of 2006 only 109--less than 10 percent--scored ABC ratings of 166 or higher meaning a littleover 13 percent of their runners achieved the requisitestandard Of course this includes most of the star siresB-37 of the 40 top sires on gtA Index= (top 2 percentearners published last week) achieved this rating andthe other three still all scored above 150 on the ABCscale Here is a more subjective list then of quiteconsistent rather than necessarily gtstar= sires--horsesyou might want to consider if you classify yourself as agtracehorse breeder= Some of these have been men-tioned in recent columns before the 2006 year-endfigures were available Here are thumbnail sketches ofthis week=s 20 reviewed alphabetically starting with(of course)

Alphabet Soup ($15000 Adena Springs) The 1996 GIBreeders= Cup Classic winner had sired six crops ofracing age through the end of 2006 His first two cropsincluded 23 stakes winners He had seven in his nexttwo but none so far in his last two His stud feedropped to $10000 for =03 and =04 was back up to$20000 in =05 and $25000 in =06 Breeders who usehim this year for $15000 are liable to benefit frombetter mares bred to him the last two years

Arch ($25000 Claiborne) His A Runner index still isn=tthat high (167) but what a model of consistency he=sproving (222 B 181 C) Like Alphabet Soup two-year-olds aren=t his specialty His 2005 two-year-oldswere bred on $5000 seasons so maybe we shouldn=texpect too much but his stud fee has since gone to$10000 then $15000 and now $25000 I believehe=s full even at that and considering he hadGradeGroup I winners Les Arcs Pine Island andArravale in 2006 it=s not hard to see why

Belong to Me ($12500 Lane=s End) Nobody seemsthat interested any more but he was a really fast sonof Danzig out of an amazing family and he=s been areally consistent sire these last few years You couldbreed to a lot less sire for a lot more money

Bernstein ($30000 Castleton Lyons) The sire of thedual G1 Carlos Pellegrini winner Stormy Mayor hasaveraged under 40 foals for his three crops gtup north=yet his numbers stack up pretty well--especially lastyear=s first crop of four-year-olds which has now hadfive stakes winners from 37 foals It=s beginning to looklike this guy really is worth the money

Cape Cross (i50000 Darley) This is a really goodsire in my opinion in the same class as horses whostand for twice as much money He had five groupwinners last year (two of them two-year-olds) and Ithink of him terribly underrated as a sire of consistentlygood horses He=s one of the cheapest top sires aroundand we=ve hardly even seen anything yet out of goodmares

Five Star Day ($20000 Wintergreen) He had fourtwo-year-old stakes winners in his second crop lastyear He won graded stakes races sprinting three con-secutive years and finished second to Forestry in theepic 1999 GI King=s Bishop with Successful Appealthird and a below-form Yes It=s True down the track Heand City Zip (also first three-year-olds =06) are doingtheir best to make Carson City a credible sire of sires

Freud ($10000 Sequel NY) Giant=s Causeway=s littlebrother never won a stakes but is racking up goodnumbers at stud including the very speednow-three-year-old filly Quick Little Miss second in theGI Hollywood Starlet and Monday=s GII Santa Ynez SThe numbers say he=s no one-trick pony either

Intikhab (i8000 Derrinstown) This has got to be oneof the best $10000 stallions in the world what withhis third-crop filly Red Evie becoming a Group 1 winnerand Mudawin from his first crop winning the rich14-furlong Ebor H at 100-1 last year He just continuesto turn out useful winners at all ages and all distances

Not For Love ($25000 Northview) Beautifully bred(by Mr Prospector out of Private Account=s GI-winninghalf-sister by Northern Dancer Dance Number) and hasbeen Maryland=s top sire the last five years including in2006 when he had 28 ABC Runners including eightstakes winners He=d probably be standing for twicethis in Kentucky

Put it Back ($5000 Bridlewood) Five-for-five includ-ing the seven-furlong GII Riva Ridge as athree-year-old and sire of nine 2006 three-year-old ABCRunners from 34 first-crop foals Can=t say I knewmuch about him until I saw these figures but I=m learn-ing fast From the farm that brought you Stormy Atlan-tic they are clearly doing something right

Skip Away ($15000 Hopewell) Ten-time GI winnerincluding the 1997 GI Breeders= Cup Classic (maybe nota bad race for sires considering Alphabet Soup andAwesome Again won the race either side of gtSkippy=Lowest of these on A Runner Index but scores high onconsistency and they seem to handle all surfacesincluding turf and all-weather (AW) They=re okay astwo-year-olds but do seem better as three-year-oldsand up

Smoke Glacken ($25000 Gainesway) GI winner attwo and champion sprinter at three in 1997 but healso scores above 200 for four-year-olds His best havebeen GII winners Smoke=N Frolic and Read the Foot-notes but he looks a really useful type to kick a mareoff with as they=re quite precocious too Not a mar-quee sire maybe but a very useful one

Successful Appeal ($40000 Walmac) Has a couple ofreal gtboxcar= numbers namely 393 A Runner Index anda blockbuster 509 rating for two-year-old ABC Run-ners He had five of the latter last year including twograded stakes-winning fillies He=s only averaged 40foals per crop He won five GII-GIII races ranging fromsix furlongs to a mile competing with a group of horseswhich now looks massively underrated by the GradedRace system--at least in terms of producing sires

Trajectory (C$7500 Gardiner) Raced and stillhalf-owned by Pin Oak he is another feather in the capof burgeoning sire of sires Gone West Five differenthorses from his first two crops won or placed in 14stakes races in Canada this year He never ran at twohimself but had two ultra-tough two-year-olds out in2006 the filly Midnight Shadow and the geldingDancer=s Bajan

Trippi ($10000 Ocala Stud) As discussed a couple ofweeks ago he won four seven-furlong graded races atthree in New York and Florida plus the GIII Flamingo atnine furlongs He had 16 individual ABC runners in hisfirst two crops last year five of them two-year-olds--not that surprising considering he=s by End Sweep outof a Valid Appeal mare He ranked number five on the2006 two-year-old sire list

Victory Gallop ($10000 WinStar) We loved him lastyear when they slashed him to $10000 and the rec-ommendation stands He sired 22 ABC Runners among80 winners and the earners of $34 million last year Hestill looks excellent value with ratings of 225 for ARunners 249 for B=s and a 235 three-year-old ABCrating
