PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
February has flown by, as it often does. The weather starts
warming up and we are seeing more of that wonderful sunshine
that lifts all of our spirits!
We finished off the month with Pink Shirt Day and an assembly
full of music, reminding all of us that we need to be aware of our
daily habits and think about how we treat one another. We must
not judge one another, but rather accept each other as we are
and celebrate diversity as well as practice kindness.
This month our grade 7 students in the English program
participated in the district’s public speaking competition. The
topic was “The greatest life lesson I have learned so far is…” We
had six school finalists that competed for the two spots for the
Zone Finals. They were: Evelyn, Sara F., Mohammad, Edward,
Alexandra and Aaron. Congratulations to Edward and Evelyn for
moving forward to the Zone Finals that were held on Thursday,
February 21st. Thanks to Mr. Lai for working with the students in
his class to prepare for this great district opportunity.
Basketball season has wrapped up for another year. Thanks to
Ms. Kerluke, Mme Turcios and Mr. Nielsen for coaching the
teams. Thanks to all the parent drivers for making it a great
success. We also want to recognize a former student, Olivia
Jaswal, for coming and helping out with all the practices for the
girls, as well as Mr. Kashima (Student Teacher) who also
supported the girls’ team. Please see the Basketball update in
this newsletter.
February was skipping month, with our Jump Rope for Heart
event on Thursday, February 27th! Thanks to Ms. Kerluke for
leading this event and thanks to all of you for the funds raised for
the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We will have a final count for
you in April.
Staff will attend the District’s Professional Day on February 28th
and each of us attend the Keynote presentation and two sessions
on various topics. We are then able to share our learning with
one another at a future date.
Our Writing Goal continues to be one of our main school goals as
we work to build stamina and motivation for writing.
We will be having a celebration day for French Carnaval on
Tuesday, March 10th! The afternoon will have a focus en Français,
for all of our students! Our assembly will be in the morning at
10:45am. We expect a special visit from Bonhomme! We will
have stations in the afternoon. Come out and join in the fun! We
will all be wearing our jeans, plaid shirts and toques for spirit
points!
Report cards will be sent home on Thursday, March 12th.
Please take the time to look over this report with your child
and celebrate all the learning that has happened this term. We
are proud of all of our students and their accomplishments.
We are pleased to welcome five student teachers from SFU that
will be with us until April 3rd: Ms. Drake (Div. 7), Mr. Kashima (Div.
5), Ms. Klimmer (Div. 11), Mr. Clark (Div. 2), Mme Sabet-Ghadam
(Div. 6).
Due to Spring Break, we will not send home a newsletter in
March, but our March and April calendars are available on the
website as always.
Wishing you an enjoyable Spring Break with time to spend
outdoors and reading every day. Take time to unplug from
devices and spend quality time together as a family!

Clothing Drive
Westridge Clothing Drive! Are you doing any Spring Cleaning over Spring Break? If
so, please remember to save your clothing for our clothing drive!
Westridge will be collecting clothing from April 8-17. Please bring in any used or new
clothing during this time. We will be donating all items to Big Brothers which helps
raise money for our school!
Yearbook
This year our school will once again be having a yearbook. We have had so many
excellent submissions that it has made the choice to choose a winner very difficult.
The winner of the yearbook cover contest is a submission by Maggie in Division 3.
We have decided to use a second entry for the back cover that was submitted by
Enric in Division 2. All students that had their photo taken in the Fall will be included
in the Yearbook as per the September Media Form.
Shrek the Musical Jr.
Please mark the dates of May 6th and 7th for our spring musical. This
show will feature Intermediate students from grades 4 – 7. Tickets will
go on sale in the middle of April, so watch for more information after
spring break. Shows will be at 6:30 each night.
