Territorial Mission Resources Department Australia Southern Territory © 2017 4 Written by Christopher Trodden B.A (Bib.Stud) 2. Jesus’ motivation As I thought about this, I realised there must have been something so important motivating Jesus to endure the cross? He must have held something compelling in mind to willingly go through all the suffering that He did. You might think, ‘it was his obedience to God’ or ‘it was so he could fulfil the law’ or ‘he knew he was the only perfect sacrifice’. These are all correct but they place the motivation of Jesus on something external. And that’s fine but what was motivating Him on the inside – what was His personal reasons for completing the race God had set out before? It must have been a strong reason for Jesus to agree to the suffering like He did. Yes, He knew He would rise again, but what was the prize for completing the race God had sent Him forth to finish? The answer is found in the Book in Hebrews. At first the answer I discovered shocked me, “could this really be the reason?” Story: the other day I watched a documentary on an extreme marathon called The Barkley (Netflix), has anyone heard of it? The Barkley is an extreme ultramarathon trail run that is 160kms long. Because of its steep terrain, it is the equivalent of climbing Mt Everest – twice! Each year over 80 people from around the world enter it. Since 1977 to 2016 on average only one person finishes the race. In its 39 year history, the race has only been completed 17 times. This race requires two key elements from within the runner to finish: good fuel and strong mental resilience. The first (good fuel) is what gets the body moving but the second (strong mental resilience) is what keeps it going during the really difficult parts of the race. The organisers of the event often comment, “it’s not just physical fitness you need to complete the race, there’s an inner strength that’s needed to push through.” What was Jesus’ inner strength? We know Jesus’ fuel – his ‘food’ – the thing that got Him going was the obedience to God: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (Jn 4:34), but what was His inner motivation? When He was being stung by the whip, when He was being struck on the face, when He was being nailed to the cross – what was He thinking about? What kept Him going on the inside? The answer might surprise you? Are you ready for this? Because of the cross Jesus could would secured for Jesus He hadn’t had before: It wasn’t glory. Since eternity past Jesus had His full expressed glory as God It couldn’t have been His throne, again why would He give that up in the first place just to take it again? It wasn’t His divinity because He never lost that. Territorial Mission Resources Department Australia Southern Territory © 2017 3 Written by Christopher Trodden B.A (Bib.Stud) Easter 2017: The Easter Journey: Message 5 Sermon Transcript: A Joy Filled Race Introduction: The silence of Saturday was broken by a thump, thump, thump at the door! “He has risen, He has risen” they exclaimed! John and Peter got up from the house and ran as fast as they could to the tomb where Jesus was laid to rest, the other disciples madly following after them (Luke 24:12). We read: “John outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over a looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. When Peter reached the tomb, he went straight in – shocked to see the linen grave clothes lying on the floor (Jn 20:4). The other disciples arrived next, There they all were, gathered around huffing and puffing from racing to the tomb – it was true, Jesus had risen from the dead! What excitement the disciples must have felt! What joy! What wonder! Jesus had done what He said He would do: He died and three days later He was alive again – the King had risen! Transition The resurrection has been called ‘the linchpin of Christianity … without it there would be no Christianity at all” one author put it (Lee Strobel). 1. So much to celebrate The Apostle Paul wrote, “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (1 Cor 15:14 NIV). Useless he says, useless! Now that should make anyone sit up and listen when they hear someone talk about the resurrection. Today is Resurrection Sunday – It is such a fantastic day for us all to celebrate with pure unmitigated joy all that Jesus has done: He saved us from an eternity without God He made available His life giving Spirit that we might never be alone He poured out His grace to show that every person has value He died so that we might have life He was bruised so we might be healed He was forsaken that we might enter into God’s kingdom He forgave us of all our sins so that we might be reconciled to God He made available the Holy Spirit that we might live a new life . What a great cause for celebration - Amen! Point1: We have great cause for celebration. Transition When we consider all that Jesus has done for us it should cause us to celebrate and be so thankful, but have you ever stopped to wonder: what was in it for Jesus? I mean, we gained so much but what was in this for God? What was His motivation? It is a day of pure joy and praise. We gained so much from Jesus’ sacrifice but what about God? What was the inner drive Jesus had to endure such suffering? A. So much to celebrate Ø The resurrection is the linchpin of Christianity Ø Jesus has done a remarkable work Point One: We have great cause for celebration B. Jesus’ motivation Ø The cross would secure something new for God Ø Jesus was motivated by joy Ø The joy was held in the new family of God Point Two: We were the joy set before Jesus C. A new race begins Ø Jesus has crossed the finished line Ø Jesus has invited us onto the field of mission Ø Jesus has passed the baton to us Point Three: Like Jesus we have a race to run Response In the times of Christ, when an athlete finished a race they were given a crown and huge feast was held in their honour. That banquet feast is still going and there is plenty of room left at the table, all you have to do is put your trust in Jesus.
