Descriptione2XP® Tile Backer is an acrylic coatedmoisture and mold resistant gypsumpanel specially designed for use asa substrate for interior tile applica-tions in high moisture areas.

e2XP Tile Backer is manufacturedwith an enhanced moisture andmold resistant core and facer. The front facer is composed of an acrylic coated fiberglass matwhich provides superior moistureresistant capabilities.

It is produced in 1/2" Regular and 5/8" Fire-Shield® Type X, 4'wide in standard lengths. e2XP TileBacker is lightweight, has a non-combustible core, scores and snapseasily and is specially coated onthe front, back and sides for easyhandling. e2XP Tile Backer is identi-fied by National Gypsum’s originalPURPLETM color on the back andgray acrylic coating on the front.

Features/Benefits Manufactured to meet ASTM C

1178 (“Standard Specificationfor Coated Glass Mat Water-Resistant Gypsum BackingPanel”).

e2XP Tile Backer is GREENGUARDChildren & SchoolsSM Certifiedfor indoor air quality.

e2XP Tile Backer is GREENGUARDCertified for microbial resistanceper ASTM D 6329.

Resists the growth of mold perASTM D 3273 with a score of10, the best possible rating.*

Achieves a flame spread of 0and smoke developed of 0 perASTM E 84.

5/8" e2XP Tile Backer contains aFire-Shield Type X gypsum coreand is approved for inclusion inspecific UL fire-rated designs.

Acrylic coated fiberglass facerprovides an integral water barrier, eliminating the need for a separate water barrier.

Excellent performance in highmoisture environments such asbaths, showers, kitchens andlaundries.

Recommended for both wetand non-wet applications.

*Mold and Mildew Resistance:

e2XP Tile Backer was designed to provideextra protection against mold and mildewcompared to standard gypsum board prod-ucts. When tested by an independent labper ASTM D 3273 (“Standard Test Methodfor Resistance to Growth of Mold on theSurface of Interior Coatings in an Environ-mental Chamber”), e2XP Tile Backerachieved a score of 10, the best possiblescore for this test. No material can be con-sidered “mold-proof,” nor is it certain thatany material will resist mold or mildewindefinitely. When used in conjunction withgood design, handling, and constructionpractices, e2XP Tile Backer can provideincreased mold resistance versus standardgypsum board products. As with any buildingmaterial, avoiding water exposure duringhandling, storage and installation, and afterinstallation is complete, is the best way toavoid the formation of mold or mildew.

Limitations For interior use only.

Always apply tile/finishes to thegray acrylic face.

Joints under tile should be treated with alkali-resistantfiberglass mesh tape set in thin-set mortar or tile adhesive.

Conventional paper drywalltape, joint compound, drywallnails, and drywall screws shouldnot be used in wet areas.

Not for use on floor installations.Use PermaBase® BRAND CementBoard for these applications.

Not recommended for use inshower pans or shower curbs.

Do not use as a base for nailingand mechanical fastening.

Should not be exposed to temperatures exceeding 125°F(52°C).

Continuous exposure to extremeconditions in applications suchas saunas, commercial steamrooms, and radiant barriers atfireplaces should be avoided.Use PermaBase® BRAND CementBoard for these applications.

Do not install a vapor barrierdirectly behind tiled e2XP TileBacker. Consult your local building code for vapor barrierrequirements.

Do not apply e2XP Tile Backer directly to concrete or masonryblock.

Fixture/plumbing penetrationsand abutments to dissimilarmaterials must be caulked orsealed.

AccessoriesJoint Reinforcement

Use 2" wide polymer-coated/alkali-resistant mesh tape.

Embed tape and set tile withthin-set mortar (ANSI A118.1 or A118.4) or organic adhesive(ANSI A136.1).

For dry non-tile applications, treat joints with drywall tape andsetting type joint compound.

 Flexible sealant (ASTM C 920)

Installation Install with gray side facing awayfrom the framing, apply tile/finishesto the gray side.

Score/cut from the gray side usinga standard utility knife. Cut outsare made easily with a utility knifeor saw. Panel joints must be tight.Gaps and inside corners shall befilled with flexible sealant. Drivefasteners flush with the panel surface, do not countersink.

Walls: Install panels either hori-zontally or vertically to framingusing fasteners every 8" o.c. Whenapplying tile, use minimum 20 gaugesteel or wood framing spaced 16"o.c. without blocking, or 24" o.c.with blocking at all joints for 1/2",spaced 24" o.c. for 5/8".

Ceilings: When used as a tile substrate for ceilings, apply panelsperpendicular to the supportsspaced a maximum of 12" o.c. for1/2" and 16" o.c. for 5/8". Spacefasteners 8" o.c. along all supportmembers.

Countertops: Apply e2XP TileBacker over a minimum 23/32"exterior grade plywood sub-baseusing a bed of thin set mortarapplied with a 1/4" x 1/4" notchedtrowel between the plywood ande2XP Tile Backer. Fasten using 1-1/4"corrosion resistant roofing nails orcoarse thread bugle head screwsspaced no more then 8" o.c. inboth directions.

Penetrations: Caulk or seal fixture/plumbing penetrations andabutments to dissimilar materials.

FinishingTile application over e2XP Tile Backer

Tile can be set using either thin-setmortar (ANSI A118.1 or A118.4) or organic adhesive (ANSI A136.1).Alkali resistant fiberglass tape shallbe imbedded with the tile settingmaterial prior to tile installation.Install using manufacturer’s instruc-tions. Allow tile setting material tocure for a day prior to applicationof grout. Installation guidelines canbe found in this brochure and byothers such as TCNA Handbookspecifications F146-09, F151-09,W245-09, C315-09, B419-09,B420-09 and C513-09.

Non-tile application over e2XP Tile Backer

Dry Non-Tile Applications: Outside the wet areas of showersand baths, tape joints with drywalltape and embed with setting typejoint compound such as ProForm®

BRAND Quick Set Setting Compound.Skim the entire surface with a jointcompound to create a smooth sur-face for finishing. Setting compoundor all purpose ready mix joint com-pound may be used for skim coat.

High Humid Area Applications:For areas of higher than normalhumidity such as swimming pools, process facilities, etc., finish the wallswith materials suitable for humidenvironments such as direct appliedfinish systems. Caulk all transitionsand abutments to dissimilar materi-als with a flexible caulk. All penetra-tions, including outlets and switches, shall be appropriately sealed.

Safety

The following standard work practicesare recommended: Installers shouldwear long pants and a long-sleevedloose fitting shirt. Fire Resistance Ratings

Fire resistance ratings represent theresults of tests on assemblies madeup of specific materials and config-urations. When selecting construc-tion designs to meet certain fireresistance requirements, cautionmust be used to ensure that eachcomponent of the assembly is the

one specified in the test. The ULcore designation for 5/8" e2XP TileBacker is FSW-6.

Notes: When applying tile use minimum 20 gauge steel framing. Tile not required to achieve fire rating.
