GRAMMAR LINKS what kind of music to you like?

A question that begins with “what kind of” is asking for a descriptor or attribute of the object following “of.” The pronoun “what” indicates that the inquiry is regarding a thing, not a person (“who”) or a place (“where”.) “Do” refers to an action performed or enacted, the main verb,

Page 7: E23 - The Music Festival (PDF)E23 - The Music Festival Page2 Episode Introduction and Preview Gizmo In this story Tom Jr. comes home from college for a visit. He invites Lu, and Lloyd

E23 - The Music Festival Page7

followed by the object to be modified.

country music, classical music, hard rock music

A noun is a person, place or thing. It can be used to modify another person, place or thing, especially in the absence of an appropriate adjective form. Such constructions can be clear and concise, as in "country music." Overuse of nouns to modify other nouns can lead to awkward or confusing constructions, so keep two principles in mind. First, whenever possible, use a possessive or an adjective as a modifier. Second, use only short nouns as modifiers, and use them only in sequences of no more than two or three words.

which When the word “which” begins a question, it is an interrogative similar to “what kind of”. “Which,” in this case, is an adjective that modifies a specific thing as distinct from another.

aren’t, isn’t The contractions “aren’t” and “isn’t” are used as an abbreviated form of “are not” and “is not” when the subject of the sentence is a proper noun or the pronouns “he”, “she”, “it” or “they.” The apostrophe is substituted for the “o” in the negation “not” creating the contraction.

CULTURE LINKS festival A music festival is a concert, spanning one or more

days, and featuring a number of acts. Festivals are frequently devoted to only one genre of music. Many cities around the US sponsor annual music festivals. These festivals may be focused on a single genre such as the infamous New Orleans Jazz festival or may include all kinds of music like the Music Midtown festival in Atlanta, Georgia.

Featured Cultural Content Music festivals in the US

Music festivals have enjoyed a long history in the US. A music festival is a concert, spanning one or more days, and featuring a number of acts. Festivals are frequently devoted to only one genre of music. One of the oldest music festivals is the Newport Jazz Festival, in New Port, Rhode Island, which began in 1954. For over 50 years it has delighted millions of jazz fans. This festival is also famous for an incident in 1965. When Bob Dylan plugged in his electric guitar, he was booed off the stage. Perhaps the most famous of all American music festivals was The Woodstock Festival and Concert, usually referred to simply as “Woodstock.” During this three-day event in 1969, nearly half a million people gathered for a three-day concert in the rain and mud to hear music from almost all the top rock bands of the time. The filthy, joyous, peaceful crowd drew attention from media around the world. Today, there are more than 8,000 music festivals every year in North America. In addition to jazz and rock, you can find festivals focusing on blues, folk, world music, heavy metal (“Lollapalooza”), bluegrass, country, reggae, and any other musical genre you could think of. Most are held at outdoor venues, spread over a large area. This allows them to have multiple stages, with several acts playing at once. In addition to the music, a vendor area is usually prominently featured, where people can buy food, souvenir T-shirts, musical instruments, CDs, and a variety of other items.

Famous American music genres

America is the birthplace of many different genres of music, many of which sprang from African American communities. Blues developed in the delta region of the Mississippi river, the largest river in the country. It was simple music, mostly accompanied by acoustic guitars and hand claps. Songs expressing the troubled times of African American life followed the migration of farm workers in the South to the industrial cities of the north. Along the way, jazz developed out of the blues. It has grown to encompass very intricate forms and its hallmark is improvisation – and the more innovative, the better. Jazz is played by small “combos” (trios and quartets) and large bands with many musicians. Blues also spawned rock and roll music, which was popularized by Caucasian performers, the most famous of which was Elvis Presley. The 1950s sound of rock and roll evolved into the rock music of the 1960s and beyond. Folk music developed from simple tunes brought by settlers from their European origins. These songs we adopted and changed by the simple folk of the Appalachian Mountains in the Eastern United States. Folk music evolved into bluegrass and country/western music (or simply “country”). Bluegrass is performed mostly on acoustic instruments. Country/western music is most often sung by musicians wearing cowboy hats and contains references to the woes of the simple life, marital discord and failed romance. Rap and hip-hop music developed in urban centers in the 1990s. This music focuses on the words more than the music but frequently has a driving beat.
