South Africa: Stolen Paintings Believed to Be FoundBy THE ASSOCIATED PRESSPublished: November 13, 2012
An informer’s tip led the SouthAfrican police on Tuesday to a privatecemetery in Port Elizabeth where theyfound four paintings hundreds ofmiles from the Pretoria Art Museum,from which they were stolen onSunday, the authorities said. One oilpainting of a South African townshipstreetscape by Gerard Sekoto, worthabout $800,000, remains missing.Brig. Marinda Mills of the South
African Police Service said the authenticity of the paintings was beingverified. No arrests have been made. The robbers posed as eagerstudents with their teacher, paying for tickets and asking a curator toshow them specific paintings. Then they pulled out pistols, tied up the curator and fledwith the works they had asked about, officials said.
