Wire Sorting Machine

The Wire Sorting Machine project group is working with sponsor Wizard Manufacturing Inc. to design

and build a semi-automated machine to gather, orient, and dispense walnut huller wires for packaging.

Wizard’s current wire production process requires costly manual labor to gather the wires as they are

made and place them on a sorting rack for weighing and packaging. Our machine will automate this

process as the newly produced wires are fed into it and subsequently oriented via a hooked wheel

system. The correctly oriented wires are then fed onto a rack system that will automatically weigh out

the operator-selected weight and evenly distribute them for packaging. At this point, the user only needs

to remove the full racks and slide the wires into boxes for shipping. This process is less labor intensive

which will increase walnut huller wire production efficiency for Wizard Manufacturing. Increasing

Blank Transfer Process

The Blank Transfer Process project is sponsored by the US Mint in San Francisco. Throughout the year,

the SF Mint produces up to 30 million coins ranging from pennies to golden dollars. They receive the

blanks in extremely large metal containers each weighing 1,800 kilograms. These bins need to be broken

down into more manageable lot sizes of 10 kilograms (+/- 2kg). Currently, this process is 100% manual

where the material handlers use a large scoop to transfer blanks into the smaller trays. Throughout the

year, the amount of manual labor and all safety aspects attached to that, has taken its toll not only to the

safety of the employees, but an increased liability of on-the-job injuries to the Mint. Our task was to

design, build, and test a process which will assist, if not totally eliminate, the amount of manual labor

needed to perform this task. Our design solution is a Vac-Hopper System. The Vac-Hopper System

collects the blanks from the large bin weighs them and distributes them into a smaller bin. The Vac-

The coin capsule opener machine senior project is sponsor by the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. Anywhere

from 50,000 to 150,000 coin capsules are returned to the U.S. Mint each year. These coin capsules then

must be opened for reuse or recycle. The current opening method utilized at the U.S. Mint is tedious,

dangerous and inefficient which imposts a problem that must be solved. After countless hours of

developing, brainstorming and visiting the U.S. Mint to observe the current process; the Jury-Rigged

Lever and the heavy duty hole puncher. It was concluded that the best way to solve the problem at hand

is to send the coin capsules through two blades, one on each side, via actuator to separate the top half

from the bottom half. The top half will be sorted aside while the bottom half, containing the coin, will

Collegiate Wind Competition

While interdisciplinary teams invite rich learning opportunities, collaborating with others from non-

technical backgrounds to develop a cohesive product has presented some of the team’s most prominent

challenges. As part of a larger interdisciplinary competition team comprised of business and engineering

students, this design team is responsible for designing and building a scale model prototype of a unique,

off-grid wind-driven power system based on market research. This multi-faceted task calls for a safe,

reliable, effective turbine and a load system that represents a market need and can match and visually

display the power being generated. The prototype is judged based on its ability to produce power at low

and moderate wind speeds, control power output and rotor speed at high wind speeds, shut down

safely, and operate for extended periods under erratic winds. The prototype solution features an upwind,

horizontal-axis wind turbine equipped with a wind lens. Closed-loop feedback control manages a

dynamic load to optimize power output and a relay network adjusts circuit resistance to control rotor

Dust Abatement Project

The Dust Abatement Capstone project has been initiated to address the problem of dust creation during

North State Hulling’s Fall-season operations. North State Hulling is a Chico-based almond hulling

operation located on west 5th street. The transportation of freshly-harvested almonds to various

locations within the North State property generates a substantial quantity of airborne dust which then

migrates into surrounding residential neighborhoods. A solution was needed to mitigate this rogue dust.

The Dust Abatement team has designed a water-based dust suppression system which will integrate with

North State Hulling’s existing processes with minimal cost, interruption, or complexity. Specially sized

nozzles installed on North State Hulling trailers will disperse water during key processes which will

Automated Strike Jamb Router

The sponsor of this project, Norfield Industries, is a company focused on developing new and innovative

machinery for the pre-hung door industry. Norfield currently markets a product called the "250MX Strike

Jamb Router." This machine requires an operator to follow a steel template in order to route the correct

mortise pocket pattern in a door jamb. The major problems with the current machine are the strain it

can put on the operator, and the inconvenience of steel templates. There are currently hundreds of

different templates available, and with each new door pattern that a company may require, Norfield

must produce a new template and ship it to their customers. This project aims to solve these issues. In

order to make the machine less strenuous on the operator, the new design will automate the routing

process by using a three axis system of motion that is driven by stepper motors. The templates will be

Proximal Aorta Pressure and Flow Controlfor Silicone Aortic Models

The Proximal Aorta Pressure and Flow Control project is sponsored by Medtronic, an international

biomedical company. Medtronic’s design problem is the need for a blood flow simulation system for use

in testing medical equipment. The system must accurately simulate blood flow by pumping water

through a silicone model of an aorta. The design solution created for this purpose utilizes a servo-motor

pump and pinch valve to control the flow and pressure of water passing through the aorta model.

Readings from a pressure transducer and flow sensor are graphically presented on a computer program

which also calculates how the pump and valve are actuated. The computer interface is employed by the

user to specify the custom pressure and flow waveform to be simulated as well. This design solution is

Lundberg Family Farms requires a device that will clean a rice tote, a large sack that can carry thousands

of pounds of rice. The main problem Lundberg has with the current cleaning method is the

unpredictable use of compressed air and the amount of manual labor the process requires. The project

team’s solution is to automate the process. The solution will impact the bag from the outside while

supplying a forced air current to inflate the bag and expel the debris to the outside. A carwash style

beater using a thick polyester material known as mule tape will be used to impact the bag. This will knock

the debris off the inside wall of the tote, where a high CFM fan blows it outside. In doing so, the debris in

Golden Wheels: A Revolutionary Mobility Scooter for an Active Lifestyle in the Golden Years

David and Karen French are the private sponsors for the Golden Wheels project. David is a man who has

retired but loves to be active. He has some health issues that impedes him from walking for long

distances. Karen is a teacher and also the caretaker of David. They have an active lifestyle and want to

embrace their golden years. They have bought a few mobility scooters and researched others, and they

have been unable to find one that gives them the total freedom to travel. They need the ability to travel

and go to places with ease, such as a grocery store and post office. On these trips, it is common for them

to have a tough time loading and unloading their current scooter. Mr. French would like a scooter that

provides stability and power with the ability of easy loading and unloading. Traveling is a big concern of

the French's since they will be transporting this vehicle from a trunk of a car, bus, train or airplane with

Miniature Precision Bi-directional Remote Height Gage

The Mini Precision Bi-Directional Remote Height Gauge is a project developed by inTEST Corporation of

Silicon Valley. inTEST designs interface hardware for testing microchips at the silicon wafer level. The

problem they are faced with is the fluctuation of supplied signal during the testing process due to

variation in compressed spring loaded contact distance. The compressed distance of these spring loaded

contacts affects their electrical resistance. By knowing this distance, they can confirm sufficient electrical

signal supplied to microchips during the testing process. The first phase of the solution is a prototype

design of a miniature precision bi directional remote height gauge. The greatest challenge in this design is

The Butte County office of General Services (GS) oversees all facility maintenance and construction

projects. General Services is looking to explore the feasibility of using the Thermalito Forebay diversion

canal water as a means of cooling the newly proposed jail. Located in Oroville, CA off Highway 70, the

new jail facility would be located adjacent to the canal.

The project goal is to determine whether using the canal water is a viable solution to cooling the

proposed facility. The theoretical heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system must return all

siphoned diversion canal water back to canal.

The proposed solution is to implement a heat exchange between the canal water and the condenser’s (of

the HVAC system) hot water. This increases the COP of the Chiller, and improves the HVAC system’s

efficiency. Channeling water from the canal to the heat exchanger requires extra pumping costs. A cost-

benefit analysis is performed to decide whether this system is viable compared to a traditional water

cooling tower, common in most industrial HVAC systems.

Autonomous Tennis Ball Collector

This robot will get rid of the most annoying part of practicing tennis alone; collecting all of the balls. The

Autonomous Tennis Ball Collector can stay on one side of the court where a player might be serving to or

where a tennis ball launcher is located. To find where the collector is it will use a combination of lasers

and light detecting sensors. The size of the tennis court is always the same and always has the same

layout which makes it somewhat easier to tell where the collector is in a 3d environment. The

Autonomous Tennis Ball Collector will be about the size of a large RC car and will have balls roll straight

Today water is become more and more important to be manage effectively due to the adverse effect on

the environment. The main object of the project is to create an interconnected system that can adjust

different water timing for different irrigation zones thru the World Wide Web or internal network.

System can be improve by adding external sensors to account for humidity and moisture in the

environment. Weather forecast information based on geo location can implement to improve the

watering efficiency. Self-learning algorithms can implement to create a unique watering profile.

The System will use moisture sensors to measure the ground moisture as well as the moisture of the

environment and compare it with the weather forecast which will be taken from the internet and sort

the information to create watering schedules in a much more efficient way. The forecast and the

weather reports from the past will be recorded in an SD-Card and the data can be accessed to predict

and create the schedules for watering based on the season. This will be done by accessing past records

and by comparing it with the present information.

Smartlarm  (a very smart alarm clock)

Smartlarm is a multi-purpose smart alarm clock that offers a taste of the endless possibilities that arise

when a traditionally standalone embedded system is connected to the Internet. No longer must alarm

clocks be simple, standalone embedded systems that merely make sounds at specific times; alarm clocks

are capable of being smart objects: “augmented with capabilities such as logic processing, information

storage, sensing, real-world event actuation and network communication, made possible by small

computers.” In the same way that commonplace items like watches and televisions have been

reinvented to be smart, Smartlarm modernizes the alarm clock to meet today’s standards.

Without eschewing traditional alarm clock functionality completely, Smartlarm incorporates the old with

the new in order to provide the right features, not the most features. On top of basic alarm clock

functions such as time keeping, multiple alarm support, and loud alarm tones, Smartlarm automates

routines that are only possible because of its Internet connectivity and its constant physical presence in

the user’s room. It features dynamic alarms using Google Calendar adjusted with real-time weather and

SmartWave is a microwave oven that is designed to ease the user’s interaction when entering cooking

instructions. This is achieved by automating the process of entering times and power levels into the

microwave through the use of UPC codes and/or barcodes found on the majority of products sold in

typical grocery stores and other food stores. Instead of the user manually entering cooking times into the

microwave they will instead scan the product they wish to cook through the use of a built in barcode

scanner of the SmartWave. From there the product will be identified by connecting to an external server

through the built in Wi-Fi connection of the SmartWave and cooking times will be downloaded and

automatically entered along with relevant preparation instructions being displayed on the SmartWave’s

LCD touch screen; these instructions would be things such as “slit film over vegetables” and/or “wrap

product in a paper towel.” Furthermore if the cooking instructions require the product to be stirred or

rotated midway through then the SmartWave will inform the user through the built in LCD when that

Vehicle Accident Capture System

The Vehicle Accident Capture System (V.A.C.S.) gives motor vehicle drivers the ability to record and

document the event of a vehicle accident. With the V.A.C.S. System drivers can feel safe knowing that all

of the vehicles involved in the accident are video recorded and safely stored for future review. The

V.A.C.S. System also sends a copy of the accident data, both video recording and a data file containing

important vehicle information, to a remote server for further protection of the sensitive and valuable

data. This system also helps in the event of hit and run accidents where it is often hard to track down the

escaping driver. The V.A.C.S. System can be used in the event of an accident to help insurance companies

and court systems find the driver or drivers who are at fault.

The system utilizes a video recording device/devices placed upon the top of the vehicle which allows it to

record important information such as traffic light positions and the positioning of vehicles during an

accident. The system will utilize a force accelerometer in order to detect both the force and direction of

the accident. The system will communicate with the vehicle's on board computer system (OBD2) via
