Part 1: Read and Plan (45 min)

In the first part of this performance assessment, students prepare to write a document-based response by breaking down a historical question, contextualizing the question using knowledge learned in the unit, analyzing primary source documents, and logically organizing relevant evidence from the documents with the aid of a graphic organizer.

The activities and times provided are suggested. Students should pace themselves so that they are prepared at the start of part two to begin writing in the first ten minutes of the 45 minute block. Proctors must alert students at the following intervals:

➢ At 6 min: “You are now 6 minutes into this section and should begin ‘contextualize the question’ soon.” ➢ At 12 min: “You should begin to analyze the primary sources in the next minute if you have not already begun.” ➢ At 25 min: “You should take about 10 more minutes analyzing the primary sources.” ➢ At 35 min: “You have 10 minutes remaining on Part 1. Start organizing your evidence in the next minute if you

have not already begun.”

Notes: Teachers may choose to grade the preparation students do in Part 1 for effort, quality, and/or accuracy. However, only the essay produced in Part 2 is scored with the performance assessment rubric.

Students may use their annotated texts, notes, and graphic organizers from part one when they write their responses in part two.

SOURCE C: Ming Empire. Excerpts from Village Ordinances: “Prohibition Ordinance”

Each year we set up ordinances for our village, and yet, to our deepregret, theyaredenigratedby the greedy and overturned by the influential. As a result, they are rendered ineffective… Recently we have followed the suggestion of the villages and grouped all households into separate districts, each with a fixed number of members. On the first and fifteenth of each month, each district willprepare wine and hold a meeting to awakenthe conscience of its residents. In this manner, contact between the high and the low will be established, and a cycle will be formed. Anyone who violates our village ordinances will be sentenced in public; if he thinks the sentence is unfair, he can appeal to the village assembly. From now on, our ordinances will be properly enforced and the morality of our people willberestored.

Grade 6 Exemplar (360 words)¶1 In the Early Modern Era, (from the 14th-18th centuries), people from across the world were interacting more as a result of global trading networks. This led to a number of nations also expanding their territories to increase their political and economic power, but not all. While the Ming Empire did not expand its territory, the Mughal empire rapidly expanded its political and economic power. This occurred due to the governing philosophy of each empire. ¶2 The Ming Empire did not expand its territory because of the influence of Confucianism. A map of the Ming Empire indicates that did not expand over 300 years (A). This is because the Ming Empire followed the teachings of Confucianism, which discouraged profit-making. This led to a decrease in foreign interaction and no expansion (B). Leaders of the Ming Empire reinforced the principles of Confucianism in their laws to create stability (C). Since this is an ordinance, this means it was a local rule which affected the lives of people in one specific village (S-C). Thus, the Ming Empire did not expand its territory even during a period in which other nations did. ¶3 However, the Mughal empire rapidly expanded its political and economic power because of the influence of its Muslim leaders. A map of the Mughal empire indicates it expanded significantly under Emperor Akbar, especially at the beginning of the 17th century (D). As a Muslim, Mughal Emperor Akbar actively learned about other religions and invited them to teach him about their faiths. As Akbar expanded his territory, he gained the loyalty of new subjects through tolerance (E). Because the author was an opponent of Akbar, this means he created this document to share his concerns about Akbar’s leadership (S-E). Because of Mughal tolerance, the empire was able to expand through trade. Mughal Emperor Jahangir (Son of Akbar) communicated with the King of England in order to attract merchants to India (F). Since this document is a letter from the Mughal emperor to the English King, this means the document is private communication from one influential figure to another (S-F). That is how the Mughal Empire grew rapidly. ¶4 In conclusion, governing philosophy was extremely influential in the development of eastern empires. While the Ming Empire did not expand its territory, the Mughal empire rapidly expanded its political and economic power.
