My Fellow Rotarians,
Your unwavering support over the last few
months has been enormous. It has lighten
our load in leading the club, steering it in
the right direction back to our glory years. I
hope you are enjoying every moment of
your Rotary experience.
My sincere gratitude for your participation
in our fundraising dinner and dance last

our efforts would have been in vain. I would

REVIEW
Rotary titbits from the desk of PDG Yusuf
In 1989-90 when I was the Rotary District
Governor, I had to write my ‘Governor’s
Monthly Letter and post it. Amongst other
things, we had no emails! Since we had
French speaking countries in the District, I
managed to do a French section as well in
my Letter.
The reluctance to read Rotary material was as prevalent then as
it is now. To keep my readers amused & interested, I added a
paragraph at the end of every Letter & true to my medical
background called it the Valium Corner. The very first Letter
carried the following dose of Valium, taken from Andy Capp
cartoon in the Nation newspaper.
Andy Capp received a telegram saying, ”Mother in Law died.
Please advise whether we should bury her, cremate or embalm.”
“Do all three. Take no chances!” Replied Andy Capp.
PROJECT HAND UP HEALTHY AFRICA: A NEW DIRECTIVE USING PUPPETS

After more than a year of educating children
about HIV/AIDS using puppets, project HAND
UP, a global grant project comes to a close this
Rotary year. In October, a Rotary Foundation
cadre visited the project to carry out an audit
on the programs, finances, record keeping,
progress and plans under the project. Several
interviews were contacted with project
partners and two live shows staged as part of
the demonstration for the audit.
To ensure sustainability of the project, the
team leader, Rtn. Darren Collins from Rotary
Club of Desoto has along the life of the project
trained several young Kenyans on education
through puppetry and it is our belief that this
will ensure children in other areas will receive
this valuable education. Last week, the team
completed a second training event, sponsored
in part by a generous grant from The Rotary
Foundation. Together, the project crew of
puppeteers taught classes on puppetry, creating
object lessons, and building stages. Guest
lecturers spoke on HIV/AIDS and comedy
script writing. After 16 hours of training - we
had many new graduates!
Big "thank you" to Africa Digital Media
Institute, LVCT Health, Kenya Institute of
Puppet Theatre, #Rotary Club of DeSoto, Ro-
tary Club of Nairobi, and "Rotary the World
Over" for your contributions. The final two
training sessions will be coming in the next
few months. Our gratitude to Rtn. Darren who
has worked tirelessly to ensure the success of
the project and our Past President Eric Krystal
for the support provided to Rtn. Darren and
his team of volunteers.
