Nuland, MD, FACS, winner of the 1994 National Book Award for nonfiction, will deliver the sixteenth annual Morris H. Saffron Lecture, sponsored in part by The Academy of Medicine of New Jersey. Dr. Nuland, author of How We Die: Reflections on Life's Final Chapter (1994) and Medicine: the Art of Healing (1992), will present "As Others See Us: The Artist Looks at the Doctor. " Special invitations will be mailed to members under separate cover. Interest is expected to be high for this special annual meeting; space is limited. Members are urged to register before May 15. Hugh E. Evans, MD, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, presented "Rooseveltat Yalta"on January 27 at the Working Group on Disability in United StatesPresidents held at The Carter Center of Emory University.

Merton Griswold, MD, recorded an audiotape, "A Chequered Life -- Tales of aNew England Upbringing," a 45-minute autobiographical memoir published byWestminster Publishing Company (CO), in conjunction with his 90th birthdaylast October. Dr. Griswold retired from the practice of plastic and reconstructivesurgery in 1989.

Gerald N. Grob, PhD, Rutgers University, led a discussion following a film,"Asylum," at the National Museum of Health and Medicine, Washington, DC, onFebruary 2. The film lecture program, bridges the past and the present concernsof caring for and the treatment of the mentally ill in America.

George J. Hill, MD, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, received the MargaretHay Edwards Achievement Medal at the Annual Meeting of the AmericanAssociation for Cancer Education (AACE) in November 1994. Dr. Hill served aspresident of the AACE from 1985 to 1986.

Sandra Moss, MD, presented a history of the discovery of insulin which openeda four-week Grand Rounds symposium on diabetes. Dr. Moss reports thatresidents seemed to enjoy this glimpse of medical history at St. Peter's MedicalCenter in New Brunswick. A similar talk is scheduled for Pediatric GrandRounds.

Murray A. Rosenberg, MD, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, has beenappointed guest-editor for the November 1995 Roentgen Centennial issue of NewJersey Medicine. Contributed papers will reflect the story of the discovery ofradiology and its beginnings in New jersey.

Ira Rutkow, MD, author of the critically acclaimed Illustrated History of Surgery,delivered a lecture entitled "Nineteenth Century American Surgery," on March29. The lecture, co-sponsored by University Libraries and UMDNJ-New JerseyMedical School, was held in the History of Medicine Room at the UMDNJ-George F. Smith Library.

Christopher C. Sellers, MD, PhD, New Jersey Institute of Technology, wasawarded a National Library of Medicine publication grant for his forthcomingbook, Emergence of an American Science of Occupational Disease.

Richard P. Wedeen, MD, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, and HelenSheehan, PhD, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, St. JohnsUniversity, presented papers last December at the International Conference onEnvironment and Health in Developing Countries at the Indian Institute ofManagement in Calcutta. Dr. Wedeen's paper was entitled "Medical Signs ofEnvironmental Disease," and Dr. Sheehan 's paper was entitled "A SociologicalAnalysis of the Roles of Government, Scientists, Physicians and the Communityin Environmental Health." They also presented papers in Hyderabad at theIndian Institute of the History of Medicine and at the Directorate of MedicalEducation of the Ministry of Health, Andhra Pradesh State.

Pasteur Prize

Karen McKeon, a student at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, has beenselected the winner of the MHSNJ's Pasteur Prize for 1995. Her essay is entitled"The Influence of Medicine on William Carlos Williams' Writing." Karen willreceive a $350 prize. The runners-up are Paul Joseph Swiatocha, Jr., VernonTownship High School, for "The Bubonic Plague: A Piece of the Past We ShouldNot be 'Condemned to Repeat' and Tina Enhoffer, Saddle Brook High School,for "The History of the Bubonic Plague; " each will receive a certificate of merit.Six students will be awarded certificates as distinguished essayists. The studentsare Sarnir Shah, Laura Jean Lizzi, Leah Scherzer, Jaime L. Blank, Nicholas J.Gatto, and Leandra A. Marcelle.

A committee of MHSNJ members and others read all the essays and selected thewinning entries. The committee was comprised of Andrea and Jay Blumenthal,William Campbell, Sandra Moss, Helen Sheehan, and Richard and RobertaWedeen. This is the second year the Society has sponsored the Pasteur Prize.

UMDNJ 25th Anniversary Exhibit Opened

"The First Quarter Century: UMDNJ, 1970-1995, " an exhibit celebrating theUniversity of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey 's 25th anniversary, willopen at the George F. Smith Library of the Health Sciences on the NewarkCampus on April 19. Featured in the exhibit are photographs, documents,ephemera and memorabilia from the UMDNJ Archives illustrating theUniversit

y' s history. An opening reception will be held in the Library Exhibition

Gallery from 3 pm to 4:30 pm. The public is invited to attend.
