Print jobs can be sent, and copy jobs can be reserved to memory capacity. In addition, the device allows users to program a scan job while a print or copy job is being output.
No button needs to be pressed to reserve the next copy job. Users simply place the originals either in the feeder or on to the platen glass, and can then select Features before pressing the Start button to begin scanning.
The interrupt function operates the same regardless of the type of job being interrupted. Users press the Interrupt key, and the device will complete the set it is processing (rather than stop mid-job, as seen with other similar models—BLI analysts prefer that the job stops at the end of a set), to allow the user to submit their scan or copy job. Features such as quantity and duplex can then be programmed. The device will start the interrupt job after 30 seconds, which is average for many devices in the group). Only one job can be submitted at a time during interrupt, but users are able to interrupt for an unlimited amount of time if the device is processing a large print run.
Job priority mode can be changed by selecting the desired job on the list and pressing the Move hard key to move it higher in the queue.

aDMInISTRaTIVe UTILITIeS VERY GOOD
TopAccess, the embedded Web server, allows administrators, among other things, to change device and security settings, view the total counter and manage the address book. Administrators can also use the utility to create permissions by user and/or department, to limit or prohibit color usage, for instance. Easy to navigate, the embedded Web server can run in admin or user mode.
Public and individual workflow templates (for frequently performed copy or scan tasks) can be set up in TopAccess by the administrator to be available for the walk-up user to select at the device.
Administrators can manage Toshiba devices on the network via e-BRIDGE Fleet Man-agement System (EFMS); devices are automatically detected on the network and can be assigned to configurable groups, in order of priority, location or cost center. The utility offers administrators the ability to schedule reports and have them delivered as PDF or CSV files to designated personnel via email.

Device settings, such as address books and the public templates can be updated, backed up and cloned to other devices via EFMS.
EFMS allows for automation of meter read collection for each device’s function usage, such as identifying mono and color print, fax, scan usage counts, to help administrators identify whether devices are being under- and over-used, in order to manage output devices more efficiently. The utility also provides real-time diagnostic alerts, and can relay data from remote offices via a WAN connection.
FeeDBaCk TO WORkSTaTIOnS GOOD
e-BRIDGE Fleet Management System (EFMS) is the main feedback utility for the e-STUDIO407CS device, however it was not bundled with the device and had to be downloaded as a demo version.
Administrators can set up pop up alerts for print job completion as well as select from an extensive selection of error conditions to create different pop up alerts and assign them to different groups and users.
— However, EFMS doesn’t provide granular information on the remaining paper and toner, indicating ‘OK’ if supplies are available, a ‘Toner near empty’ warning message and ‘No toner’ and ‘No paper’ should supplies be depleted. According to the vendor, the MFP itself is due a firmware update to support notification status of all consumables.
— Audible alerts are not available with EFMS.
Administrators need to be proactive to check the Web utility and EFMS for device status as they are unable to view status via the Windows taskbar. Device status is color coded which helps to identify any problematic devices more easily; green indicates no alerts, yellow indicates warning and red is critical. Administrators can view status by model or location.
eaSe OF neTWORk SeTUp VERY GOOD
Typically setup by dealers, BLI technicians performed the setup for the evaluation. Phys-ical setup of the unit, which comes fully assembled, is straightforward. Due to size and weight concerns, the manufacturer recommends at least two people lift the unit out of the box and place it in the desired location. Packaging materials are not excessive.
It takes 10 clicks to install the PCL and XPS drivers; users will be up and running in min-utes. During installation, the port is created, the IP address is assigned, and the driver detects optional accessories (none tested), all automatically.

The PostScript and XPS drivers, along with all included software (such as Remote Scan Driver, File Downloader, Address Book Viewer), can be installed via the custom routine.
One-to-one and one-to-many cloning, which greatly simplifies administration and setup in larger environments, can be achieved through EFMS, but only with other e-STUDIO models.
pRInT DRIVeRS VERY GOOD
The unit ships with Toshiba’s Universal Printer 2 (PCL 6, PostScript 3), and XPS drivers, which are compatible with various Windows and Mac operating systems. A link to the admin folder is included, which contains drivers for additional platforms, such as Linux, Unix and Solaris.
The PostScript and Universal Printer 2 drivers share a similar layout and feature set. Users can program quantity, orientation, and paper size on the Basic tab, but must choose duplex and finishing options on the second tab.
Easy to navigate with a clear graphical interface, the drivers let users save settings for frequently programmed jobs, either as profiles or as graphical buttons in the Templates tab, thereby facilitating efficient use of the device. In addition, the Templates tab can be set as the default page to enable one-touch access to the saved jobs. Graphical changes in both drivers indicate when specific features such as duplex or quality mode have been selected. The Image Quality tab lets users select a profile, or create their own, to better match output to the type of document being printed.

Selecting toner-save mode extends the life of the cartridges and lowers TCO.
Via the drivers, users have the ability to select multiple paper trays for a single job, so, for example, covers can be printed on heavier weight media than the rest of the docu-ment.
The drivers offer users an array of color adjustment settings including controlling half-tone range, color balance, background adjustment, sharpness and hue/saturation. Users can select mono color, which enables them to print their document in one single color of their choice. Another option, twin color combined mono and one color, enables users to print their document in a single color of their choice.
File size remains the same regardless if collate is selected from the driver or the Win-dows print screen in the application.

Users can scan files in full-color, auto-color, black or grayscale to email, the hard drive, Internet fax or, via FTP or SMB, network folders, at various resolutions from 100 dpi up to 600 dpi. Supported formats are PDF (regular, slim, encrypted), JPEG, TIFF and XPS. TWAIN and WS scanning are also supported.
While the unit supports LDAP, which means users can quickly find destinations at the control panel, entering email addresses on the display’s large QWERTY keypad is easy. The keys are responsive and of average size, and a dedicated “@” key helps greatly; CC and BCC fields are supported.
The scan preview is a very useful feature, and enables users to view every page in the file and delete, insert or replace pages.
Though tested scan speeds in full-color, auto-color and black simplex modes are faster than average compared with similar legal-size printer MFPs in this class tested to date, speeds for full-color duplex mode are slower than average. Tested scan speeds in both auto-color and mono duplex modes are competitive.
Scanned files regardless of format are compressed by default. File size was reduced by 44 percent from full-color default mode to best compression.
The device supports cloud services (Google Docs, Microsoft SharePoint) and enables users to save scans directly to their cloud repository.

Print speed is tested using BLI’s Monochrome Test Original with 6% page coverage and BLI’s Color Test Original with 10% coverage for each color (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). The test page is printed in a quantity equal to double the vendor’s rated print speed for the device in each mode tested (e.g., if the vendor’s rated print speed is 20 ppm, 40 pages are printed). The unit’s print speeds were tested using the PCL driver.

Efficiency is tested using a 10-page full-color document and a 10-page black document. BLI obtains the overall efficiency for each mode by averaging the efficiency ratings (derived by dividing the tested speed of the device by the rated speed and then multiplying by 100) for each run length (1, 5 and 10 sets). The unit’s efficiency was tested using the PCL driver.

BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook email messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device. The unit was tested with the PCL driver.

The control panel, which tilts freely, is wide, well organized and offers a range of hard keys, including an alphanumeric keypad and dedicated keys for Print, Scan, Copy, Fax, and e-FILING, along with LEDs for Print Data, Attention, Main Power, Data in Memory, and Power Save.
The 9” color touchscreen displays a simple and user-friendly menu system making navi-gation very straightforward. The screen is bright—display contrast and brightness can be adjusted by the user—and is tiltable, providing excellent accessibility and legibility to users.
According to Toshiba, the device is one of the first of its class to offer all parts as com-pletely user-replaceable, which helps to minimize disruption to workflows and reduce operation downtime.

Users can see toner and paper status by pressing the Job Status Update button on the display, then the appropriate tab. Remaining toner level status is clearly displayed via color bars and percentage figure (in increments of 10).
The Help “?” button located top right on the screen displays a directory of information relating to specific functions, for instance, if users aren’t sure how to create booklets or enable duplexing.
— Owing to the device’s double clamshell-like design, changing toner is not as straightfor-ward as found with other similar devices. To access toner cartridges, the whole scan-ner bed swings up and over, and the front panel lifts up–a two-fold operation–exposing the toner cartridges underneath. BLI analysts found this a highly unusual process and attributed this to the device’s design, combining a print engine with a scanner bed and finisher built over it.
Changing toner is not a straightforward process; the user has to lift up the scanner bed and front panel to access the cartridges (viewed right).

Adjusting the drawer for different-size media is simple. Tabs must be pressed to move the length (not removable) and width (slide in sync) guides. Loading paper is straightfor-ward as there are no corner separators, spring-loaded ramps or anything else to make the process troublesome.
Loading paper is a clean procedure: users simply drop the paper into the drawer.
— The device cannot auto detect when a different size of paper is loaded; users must move the dial on the right side of the drawer to select the appropriate media size.
However, once users gain access, replacing toner is a mess-free easy process; simple lock and unlock blue levers allow the toner cartridges to slide out. Cartridges are keyed and carry color code labels—as does the device itself—so handling errors are unlikely.

Clearing misfeeds in the document feeder locations is easy. For jams in any area, instruc-tions and a graphical depiction of the unit are automatically brought up on the display; users scroll down to see the next direction.
Misfeed locations are signposted on the touchscreen, together with clear instructions on how to access and remove the jammed paper.
— However, in the scenario where the unit is positioned against a wall and a jam happens in the rear, maneuvering the e-STUDIO407CS around may be a cumbersome procedure for users. Furthermore, for any misfeeds inside the unit, the cartridge and drum assem-bly will have to be removed; and in these cases, the scanner bed must be flipped up to the right and the front panel lifted up in order to remove consumables, leaving the drums exposed, thereby making them susceptible to damage.
The control panel offers the user an extensive feature set, allowing them to customize settings on an individual job-by-job basis and offers template options to help automate workflows; users can save frequently used job settings as a one-touch template item for future use.
FeaTURe SeT VERY GOOD
The Toshiba e-STUDIO407CS MFP’s open platform architecture allows for the integra-tion with time- and/or money-saving solutions developed by Toshiba, such as Toshiba’s optional e-BRIDGE Re-Rite OCR software, or third parties.
While every device in the competitive group offers standard automatic duplexing, this feature still contributes to less paper waste and can contribute to a lower TCO. The e-STUDIO407CS is defaulted to duplex for print output, and it also offers an Omit Blank Page feature which further helps paper conservation by removing all blank pages from all jobs.
Job skip feature allows users to skip to the next job if the current job runs out of paper, allowing for uninterrupted operation for users.

Outside Erase feature allows user to copy and scan books and 3D objects with the RADF open.
Print from USB is standard. The port is on the front of the unit, which auto-discovers the stick. Users must press the Print hard key and then choose USB from the drop-down menu, at which point they can browse folders. JPEG, PDF and XPS formats are supported, multiple jobs can be output at once, and users can change selections for simplex/duplex, finishing, and paper source.
One-touch templates let users store personalized settings or workflows, with up to 12,060 available.
e-Filing is an excellent feature and allows for one public box and 200 private boxes to be created, with up to 100 folders per private box and up to 400 documents per folder (200 pages per document) supported. Users are able to backup e-Filing data from the unit to a computer, then restore it later if necessary. The private boxes are set up by the administrator in TopAccess and are password-protected. When users select a file in their e-Filing box, the Open command brings up a thumbnail preview of the document; users can click and select individual pages, or set options, such as adding a date stamp, prior to printing.
Non-upgradeable RAM capacity of 2 GB is among the highest compared with the aver-age standard and maximum capacities of legal-size color laser/LED printers in this class. The unit ships with a 160-GB Toshiba Secure hard drive (newer models will be equipped with a 320-GB Toshiba Secure hard drive). Memory is shared between functions.
— Standard (630 sheets) paper capacity is below average; the figure includes the standard bypass, which has a competitive maximum capacity of 100 sheets.
The standard RADF has a capacity of 100 sheets, which is competitive.
An optional offline convenience stapler, which can staple up to 20 sheets, is on the right side of the unit.
Typical of competitive devices, the unit enables users to output both sides of an ID card on a single side of paper.
The device offers an extensive range of security features including a self-encrypting drive (SED) utilizing Wipe Technology which protects data in the event of the hard disk drive being removed from the MFP and attempted to be installed in another, by erasing it automatically. However, if the disk drive is reinstalled in the original MFP, the data is unaffected. e-Filing private boxes are password-protected and the device allows scans to be saved as encrypted PDFs, as well as supporting network user authentication.
The device offers a Super Sleep mode that, according to the manufacturer, cuts power consumption to 1.5 watts, to help reduce energy use.

Test Environment: The product has been tested in BLI’s European test lab, in an environment monitored by two Temp/RH chart recorders, which ensures that typical office conditions are being maintained. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from affecting equipment under test.
Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network in Europe, consisting of Windows 2008 servers, Windows 7 workstations, 10/100/1000BaseTX network switches and CAT5e/6 cabling.
Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, five weeks of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly duty cycle, with 25 percent of the test volume consisting of copy jobs and 75 percent consisting of print jobs. BLI’s daily test usage is designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday, and as such includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day. The durability evaluation also includes testing of the document feeder/scanner for an additional 10 percent of the monthly maximum volume, evenly divided over the course of the test.
Tested Configuration: Toshiba e-STUDIO407CS base unit plus one paper tray and internal finisher (UK).
Test Procedures:: The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation, color gamut and drift is evaluated using a 300 color patch test target that is read using an EFI ES-1000 color spectrophotometer and Chromix ColorThink software. Furthermore, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 508 Densitometer. UPM Future and MetsäBoard DataCopy multi-purpose paper is used in the tests. Twenty percent of test durability volume is conducted using Mondi Triotec 30% and Mondi Nautilus SuperWhite 100% recycled media. Image quality is tested using UPM Imagetech color laser paper.
