Explain only that CPT/OPT/AT typically are used during summer and post-graduation. Students will want to review information first and then speak with an advisor about their options. All forms of work authorization require careful planning and timely filing.

16Social Security Number and Drivers LicenseYou must complete registration with DVS before applying for a Social Security Number or a NC Drivers License.

For Social Security Number:F-1 students only eligible if approved for employment.J-1 students eligible without employment.

When eligible, students must present to Social Security Administration:Verification letter (visa status/job) issued by DVSRequired supporting documents

Trips to SSA occur every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Please arrive at International House by 9:45 a.m.

For Social Security Number and Drivers Licenses: WAIT 10 business days after entering the U.S. and registering with DVS before applying.

You now must take the following to the DVS Office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.:

Your ORIGINAL visa documentsYour completed SEVIS E-Registration Form Signed Acknowledgement FormJ-1 students only, the completed J Health Insurance FormIf you are a non-Duke sponsored J-1 Student (i.e. Fullbright, IIE, AMIDEAST, etc.) you must schedule an appointment with your DVS advisor directly to complete your registration.
