ABSTRACT

In Malaysia, ceramic materials is classified as antique crafts other than Songket, Batik and Wood Carving. Ceramic usually used for functional product such as tableware and sanitary ware. It aims at applying and enhancing astonishing environment through wall as a visual art for beautification. The idea is not for interior only but it is suitable for outdoor environment. Besides that it will spread out the public awareness and curiosity about ceramic materials (clay) about their understanding more ceramics application. As we know, murals are often found in places such as school building and in certain urban areas surfaces using color as they form. This idea can move together and give an impact to the ceramic industry in Malaysia. Apart from that, a new ideas and design pattern can be more attractive and significant for environment. The repetition of pattern structured design will use to cover the space and as a process to communicate with community. It is highly hoped that this design concept will help more clearly on the educational to understand ceramic itself and accept from 2D or 3D form design for wall beautification.

1. IntroductionIn Malaysia, ceramic materials is classified as antique crafts other than Songket, Batik and Wood Carving. ceramic is from clay that a basic material of ceramic area used in the process that low cost, abundant and found in many locations throughout the world (Hopper, 2004). As we know, ceramic usually used for functional product such as tableware, cooking ware, sanitary ware, tiles, covers all clay products such as architectural and structural clay products, bricks, sculpture and another decorative items.

The concept of decoration using ceramic should be given an innovation design with high impact to be success. This paper aims to apply and enhancing astonishing environment through wall as a visual art for beautification. The idea pattern is not for interior only but it is suitable for outdoor environment. The utilization of clay would create a form and it is usually manipulated someway in order to enhance the wall surface. That a purpose ceramic techniques process that have been used to make pattern easily. Innovation is simply the introduction of something new into the marketplace (Stopper, 2002). It is show that the ideas are enhanced by the initiative in the creativity aspect of ceramic. This research deliberately to know more about an innovation of ceramic surface pattern arrangement for walls. It shows that ceramic surface pattern can be a main material to further enhancement of surface. The pattern selection should be unique and eye catching for the wall (Varasteh, 2004).

The significant of wall can connect people to communicate. The design will improve and increase the mood and uninviting environments (Hinz, 2005). The statement show that decoration of composition pattern should be regarded as an integral part of any piece, rather than merely the application of color. This is no limit to the techniques that can be used.

The idea also can be used as a symbolic of that place to convey a meaning and an ideas to communicate the environment itself. It is hoped that in each case the evaluation of the work will assist more clearly the educational, technical and aesthetic validity. It can be setting at KLCC, KL Sentral, Resort, Shopping Complex, the building, Universities and more for trademark.

Innovation is defined about putting ideas to work (DISR, 1999). It is a process by which firms, industry and governments add value through successful exploitation of a new idea for the benefit of a part or whole of bussiness, industry or the nation. Means that the new idea making can raise up ceramic industry next to provide a source of income to the community. They can be used to build community awareness of local heritage and history. Often, the visual effects are an enticement to attract public attention to social issues.

According to Chief Minister of Malacca, universities should carry out projects and studies that will benefit the state (Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, 2008). He also said universities should work towards getting student involved in research and activities that can bring innovations or projects that can benefit the state not merely imparting knowledge. The purpose is more to beautify an environment and to educate people about another of ceramic wall making by ceramic surface pattern. Besides that, it connects for the beautification of environment, it also give an aesthetic value (add value).

The innovation of application ceramic surface decoration is more education about the alternative and innovation of wall decoration. Last but not least, this research will encourage readers to think more about ceramic wall with clay application and keep interest in them.

2. Materials and methodsThere are many ways to produce the wall mural decoration by ceramic material as a pattern decoration. It should be one of the first considerations when making a piece, growing throughout the making process so that decoration enhances the form as well as embellishes the surface. It can make by using the printed onto clay, by casting, press mould techniques, decorative use of clay, slip decoration, glazes and pigments, printed decoration with using simple paper stencils or more sophisticated screen printing techniques.

In order to obtain the information required in this study, several methods are used. The result of these methods should be measured and analysed to highlight the purpose, and the reason why these methods are implemented. The researcher will portray the research method that has been used in conducting this research. It starts with the production of design prototype followed by research instruments and the data analysis. Research design is to plan the research that will be conducted.

To enhance the smoothness of the progress of this research, information is acquired from the primary and secondary data. This research used 100 questionnaires with Likert Scale as a means of getting information and a list of interview that will be given to chosen respondents to answer it.

3. Applications & Techniques The first step is to sketch design by using any motif from surrounding. Actually the design could be from anywhere based the environment. The ion of creativity goes to development of idea; from concepts to reality. The application of the wall is the beginning and to show an innovation for walls. Explore and develop surface and color decoration on ceramic forms. The design will be transformed to a wall with pattern selected. The application of variety techniques in ceramic will make it nice and more interesting.

Based on table 1, there are 3 types of standard clay that we used for making the product. It is depends on the character of materials to suit the products durability.

4. Results and discussionThe purposed of making ceramic surface pattern for wall could be able to rise up to ceramic art itself. Majority people agreed and showed curiosity about the innovation using ceramic material. From the result of the questionnaire, majority of the respondents agreed with the innovation that has been suggested.

This research used 100 questionnaires with Likert Scale answer and a list of interview that will be given to the respondents to answer it. To make it easier, the data collection process the questionnaire was built based on research question and were divided into three sections, which will be focus to universities students, working people and parents. The questionnaires have a three section A, B and C.

For section A, it will be focus to the background of person, section B will focus on the level of knowledge and view about ceramic art and lastly section C will focus on feedback from respondent about the innovation of ceramic wall.

From this survey we can conclude that the innovation suggested can give a good impact to ceramic industry in Malaysia. The application of the ceramic surface pattern on wall is one way to give new revelation to a group of people. By using long lasting ceramic method, it can make environment more beautiful to look at. That is a beginning to our public to get to know about ceramic because people surrounding is always communicate with visual.

5. ConclusionAlthough at the beginning, they do not familiar with what is the exactly of ceramic art, but they have a curiosity and interested to know more about that. 64% respondents agreed with the innovation and just 4% not agreed with the innovation of ceramic wall. It shows that the purposed has been accepted by three groups of people; universities student, working people and parents. From the result of the questionnaire, majority respondents were agreed with the innovation that has been suggested. About 14% were not been given a good response for this purposed.

From this survey we can make conclusion that the suggestion of innovation can give a good impact to ceramic industry in Malaysia. With using clay, it will give more input to the process of making variety of product. The application of the ceramic wall through the public wall is a one way to give new revelation to a lot of people. With using long lasting ceramic method can make school environment in beautiful view looking. It will be a symbolic to the school itself in the future

With related to the beautification on walls, the purpose is more to educate person. The innovation of application ceramic surface decoration is more education about the alternative and innovation of wall decoration. The awareness about potential of ceramic material in Malaysia needs to be explored in the industry. Besides producing vases, clay should be given a chance to produce decoration on walls. Ceramic wall was made to beautify the environment and it is also used to cover the wall in old buildings. Besides schools, it can be decorated at hospitals, public spaces, government building, institutions and home probably.
