What is an e-portfolio? To understand what an “e -portfolio” is you need to first understand the definition of “portfolio.” Let’s be clear we are not talking about bond portfolios, stock portfolios, retirement portfolios, etc. We are talking about portfolios being created, maintained, and used for education or workforce purposes.

Working definition for the term “portfolio”: An organized collection of an individual’s work that is maintained and used for a particular education (e.g. class assignment) or workforce (e.g. job interview) purpose(s). Examples of “works” include: papers, projects, photographs, awards, letters, etc. Note: There are also “program portfolios”, “institutional portfolios”, etc.

So what is an “e” portfolio then?...... A portfolio where the individual’s works are stored, maintained, and viewed electronically.

Why use an e-portfolio?

Often translated as “Why is my [insert name...dean, chair, college, etc.] making

me use this?” Unpacking the question Understand whether this question is being driven by: 1. An external mandate or directive; or 2. A genuine interest in the use of e-portfolio

strategies; or 3. Both! Note: If the question really is “Why use an e-portfolio tool or service?” then consider shifting the conversation/discussion into the pro’s and con’s associated with e-portfolio tools and services. Don’t forget to answer the underlying question(s)

“Will this work?” or “Does it make a difference?” The short answer is “yes” there is plenty of research that shows that the effective use of e-portfolios can not only enhance teaching and learning but student engagement and persistence.

The language of “e-portfolio’s”

Yes, there is such a thing as “e-portfolio speak” or “How to sound like an e-portfolio expert in five minutes.”

There are 3+1 types of e-portfolios: • Showcase • Assessment • Developmental the “+1” • Hybrid: A combination of the above types.

Reflection: More than a pretty face. The act of reflection is a critical element in the process of developing an e--portfolio. A good reflection can often answer the questions of who, what, why, when, and how (the five w’s).

Fancy terms: curation, artifact, view • Curation: The act of creating, selecting, maintaining,

editing, showcasing, etc. the items in one’s e-portfolio. • Artifact: Generic term referring to the content/

items/works within an e-portfolio. An “artifact” may be a single item or multiple connected items.

• View: Refers to a subset of artifacts that is being displayed for a particular purpose.
