The Church in the World

Pope accepts resignationsof St. Paul archbishop, auxiliary ST. PAUL, Minn. (CNS) -- Pope Francis accepted the resignations June 15 of Archbishop John C. Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop Lee A. Piche of St. Paul and Minneapolis and named coadjutor Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda of Newark, New Jersey, a canon lawyer, to be apostolic administrator of the Minnesota archdiocese. In a statement, Archbishop Nienstedt said he submitted his resignation to Pope Francis "to give the archdiocese a new beginning amidst the many challenges we face. The Catholic Church is not our church, but Christ's church, and we are merely stewards for a time," he said. "My leadership has unfortunately drawn away from the good works of his church and those who perform them. Thus, my decision to step down." On June 5, the Ramsey County Attorney's Office filed criminal and civil charges against the archdiocese alleging it failed to protect three boys who were sexually abused in 2008-2010 by Curtis Wehmeyer, a former priest in Minneapolis.

Supreme Court allows blockon N.C. ultrasound law to stand WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The Supreme Court June 15 left a lower court ruling intact that blocked North Carolina's law requiring physicians to perform an ultrasound on women seeking abortions, and to show it to the women and describe the fetus' features. Without comment, the court let stand a 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling from last December that overturned the 2011 law on First Amendment grounds. The Supreme Court also is being asked to take at least two other cases involving state restrictions on abortion. One, which has been on the court's calendar for consideration for several weeks, asks for review of a July 2014 ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that overturned Mississippi's requirements for hospital-like standards at abortion clinics. The 2012 law also requires abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. A Texas law requiring similar standards at abortion clinics was upheld earlier in June by the 5th Circuit. Opponents of the law have asked the Supreme Court to fast-track review of that ruling.

U.S. military archbishop helpsdedicate memorial in Normandy WASHINGTON (CNS) -- In a benediction delivered in France at Normandy during events to mark the 71st anniversary of D-Day, a U.S. archbishop prayed that God would "help us never to forget the sacrifices of

this place and to be energetic so that war is never renewed." Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the U.S. Archdiocese of the Military Services gave the benediction June 6 after the dedication of a new monument on Utah Beach that depicts three American GIs emerging from a Higgins boat. The famous amphibious landing craft, designed by Andrew Jackson Higgins, was used extensively in World War II, including on June 6, 1944, known as D-Day, when the Allies invaded the beaches at Normandy and began the liberation of German-occupied northwestern Europe from Nazi control. The monument is an exact replica of one that stands in Higgins' hometown of Columbus, Nebraska.

Parents transmit church teachingon marriage by example, pope says VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Children need to see their parents kiss each other, complement each other and resolve arguments peacefully, Pope Francis said. "Dear parents, your children need to discover by watching you that it is beautiful to love another," the pope told parents participating in the annual pastoral conference of the Diocese of Rome. Parents with their children preparing for first Communion and confirmation, catechists and priests joined the pope for an evening meeting in St. Peter's Square June 14. The event marked the beginning of the diocesan conference, which focused this year on transmitting the faith. As the pope entered the square, he pointed to two boys wearing yellow shirts and invited them to climb into the popemobile to help him greet the crowd. Although he had a prepared text, he made long impromptu additions to his speech, including recounting the story of a little boy who told the pope he had seen his parents kiss. It is a "beautiful witness," the pope said.

Pope urges Scouts to be active, not just 'decorative,' in parish life VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- More than a "decorative presence" at large parish functions, Catholic Scouts and Guides are called to contribute fervor to the evangelizing mission of the church by building bridges through dialogue, said Pope Francis. More than 80,000 children and adult members of the Italian Catholic Guiding and Scouting Association gathered under the hot sun in St. Peter's Square June 13 for a short but festive rally with Pope Francis. He urged the members to "build bridges" in a society "where there is the habit of creating walls." Scouting can bring to the church "a new capacity for dialogue with society," he said, but only if groups do not lose contact with their local parishes, where they are based.
