As we think of the Pilgrims whoestablished the first ThanksgivingDay, we need to recall the reasonthey left the land of their birthand came to the New World. ThePuritan separatists were not al-lowed to worship freely in Eng-land according to the dictates oftheir hearts and minds. In August

of 1620, they boarded two small ships, theSpeedwell and the Mayflower, in search of re-

    ligious freedom in undeveloped America.

The Speedwell soon sprung leaks andmost of the crew and passengers transferredto the Mayflower before the Speedwell turnedback. There were 102 Pilgrims who sufferedthe 67 days of rough sailing before they finallylanded in Plymouth Bay in November, 1620.

Their troubles were just beginning. No housing awaited them. Noreception group. No physicians or medical facilities. There were nostores. A cold winter lay ahead with sickness for most of them. At onepoint, only six people were well enough to help the sick and the dying.

By March 1621, not even a year after arriving, only 51 of theoriginal 102 remained alive. It would be another two years before a ship

arrived carrying supplies to help them. They were compelled to live offthe land in whatever way they could.

Fortunately, some Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how toplant corn, how to fish the waters, how to find game, how to live with-out the comforts of England or Holland.

The newcomers built houses. They farmed. They fished. Theyfilled a storehouse with corn and other foods. At the end of the first har-vest, they decided to hold a feast of celebration and have a time ofthanksgiving to God for their freedom to worship as their hearts de-sired.

They invited their Native American friends to enjoy the occasionwith them. Ninety came and stayed for three days. They must have en-

joyed the worship, feasting and merrymaking.

The main point to remember is that the Puritans were willing topay an enormous price for the privilege of freedom of worship. Theywere profoundly grateful to God! Here, in America, no establishedchurch harassed them, no government agency restricted them, and noone ridiculed them. They were free to worship in the manner theychose. And they did just that!

On Thanksgiving Day we will be grateful for our abundance, thankful for our manifold blessings. Let us also be profoundly apprecia-tive of our freedom to worship according to our hearts and minds.

    deacon?

To help you, we will list the Deacon of the

Week and his list of families in the WLBC

Bulletin ENewsletter. There will be a

complete list posted on the bulletin board

near the church office. This complete list is

alphabetical by your last name. We hope this

will help you know who your deacon is for the

year. If you have any questions, please feel

free to contact the church office.

Heaven BoundHe was one of those lads who seemed to keep getting into mischief. It frustratedhis mother greatly. Finally, one day when he was being particularly troublesome,

his mother posed this question to him: "How do you ever expect to get intoheaven?"

The lively boy thought a few seconds, then said, "Well, I'll just run in and out andkeep slamming the door until St. Peter says, 'For heaven's sake, Jimmy, come in

    or stay out.'"
