HALF A MILLION STEPS DOCUMENTARY – Synod Justice Unit
Sunday 13 October 2019 at 2pm
Engadine Uniting Church, Cnr Cambrai & Chipilly Aves, Engadine
Half a Million Steps is an Australian documentary that was filmed in Dubbo and
features Dubbo local residents. The documentary was shown at the July 2019
Synod meeting. It is part of the Uniting Church’s Fair Treatment campaign to
advocate for drug law reform and enhance access to treatment and harm
reduction strategies
The 90 minute documentary tells many people’s stories of the impacts of drug
use as a baton is carried the half a million steps from Dubbo to Sydney. This is the
distance Shantell Irwin, a single mother living in Dubbo, needs to travel to find
suitable treatment and help she so needs and wants. “It takes only a few steps to
get drugs in Dubbo but I have to travel 400kms to Sydney to get treatment”, said
Shantell. Shantell’s story is not unique and there are many other people featured
in the documentary, who live in regional NSW and in Sydney who have no access
to treatment services despite their desire to get well and whole
This is an important issue today as drug induced deaths in Australia have hit their
highest in 20 years
Grace and peace to all
